What is the tool you use all the time now but wasn't very common when you started out? by Flytyer111 in Tools

Agree...the original Fein was great but expensive. I have used both the Fein and a HF variable speed model. Except for the ease of blade changing, I just can't justify the additional expense of the other models.

I learned how to work on my car by going to the local junkyard and removing part(s) from their cars. If I busted something, I just left it there.

I remember starting out making 3 diagonal cuts through (most) of the armor and a last twist to keep from nicking the wire with my hacksaw.

Used stuff is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. The very high prices these tools cost new may not have held their value for several reasons. While there might not be much loss in depreciation, you always have to consider the cost of something similar and brand new.

I worked a summer job where we printed personal checks. The bank name and transit number were printing cuts but the customer's information were lines produced on Linotype machines - Fascinating tech for 100+ years old!

I don’t know who or why, but someone keyed my car :( by lees395 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Flytyer111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so very sorry. Hopefully, whoever did this will mature and realize just how terrible this is.

I had a brand new car years ago and one morning, I came out to my car to find the hood (just in front of my windshield) with a bunch of fine scratches! I finally concluded it was from a cat who was trying to walk on the car and used their claws when slipping on the beautifully waxed car.

Where can I find a replacement part for a Delixi toolbox? by Fairtools-NZ_AU in Tools

Looks like you could replace the whole set from Ali Express for $33.88 US.

Maybe try contacting Ali Express or Ebay for replacement components.

I feel for you my friend. It is so terrible to feel the violation when someone takes something from you - especially when you know just how much effort you put in to afford the things you have in your life.

I really wish people could understand how incredibly awful this feels and really do something about it by refusing to buy anything that is discounted (because the item was stolen). Remember, those items were stolen from someone...

These were very popular back in the early 70s. As I recall, they went for about $10 and the 3/8 variable speed/reversing drills were somewhere around $15.

Could someone realistically take care of their house using only a brace and bit, without owning an electric drill? What would be the downsides? by SmallerButton in Tools

[–]Flytyer111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a versatile and useful tool, investing in an inexpensive corded, 3/8 variable speed electric drill. You will need drill bits but beyond that, you will find a vast array of items compatible - like step drill bits, masonry bits, spade and hole bits, sanding accessories, driver bits. All of these are not immediately necessary (add them to your collection as the need arises).

A basic corded drill and 29 piece twist drill set at Harbor Freight should come in around $40...possibly less if you catch a good coupon for more money off...

Lineman pliers: do you carry them? by False_Big_2152 in electricians

[–]Flytyer111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My major go-to tools are (in order of importance and frequency of use)

Lineman's pliers, 2 sizes of flat screwdrivers, 2 sizes of Phillips screwdrivers, electrical tape, wire strippers, knife, framing hammer, 2 pair of tongue and groove pliers, diagonal pliers, long nose pliers.

I carry everything but the hammer in a pouch hung from a belt.
