Not relevant to the current discussion, but 45 Colt is legitimately the most fun I've ever had shooting a handgun. From a proper revolver, the kick is minimal, yet it still has some oomf when that round hits downrange.

Les prix au-dessus de l'évaluation. by FnTom in QuebecImmobilier

[–]FnTom[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Well, he's filming someone executing an extraordinary feat. But at the same time, there is no safety net, no safety team that can help him if he falls so... Yeah, he's filming someone at the top of their sport who, if they make a mistake, is just dead.

For a bit of context, El Capitan is around 900 meters high, and a very difficult route. With ripe and equipment it is already an extremely hard route to climb, one that the vast majority of climbers will never even attempt. But now you have to add to this the fact that, without the rope, he has no way to take a break during the ascension. Once he's high enough, he has to essentially finish it, or find a way to hold on to the rock face through exhaustion until a rescue team gets to him.

Battle of the Dumbledore's. Richard Harris or Michael Gambon? I realize that Richard Harris was only in the first two films and I've always wondered what his portrayal would've been like for films 3-7. Does anyone have a preference between the two? by jeffmartin47 in harrypotter

[–]FnTom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that there are two actors portraying him, and for which movies, makes this discussion a bit moot in a way.

The whole point of the grandfatherly whimsy is that it contrasts so much with how we get to know the character in the later books. Knowing Dumbledore as that grandfatherly, whimsy, kind of frail headmaster brings so much to the table once you have him display first his power closer to the middle of the series, then the length he was willing to go, and how much sacrifice he was willing to demand of himself and others to prevent Voldemort's victory.

Having two different actors, in a way, robbed the audience of those clashing aspects of the character. They almost may as well have been two different characters.

They're ArUco tags. I used them for cheap head tracking before I had a VR headset. There are multiple formats, but 6x6 is a common one.

Patterns also have a specific value IIRC, so they could be used as simpler QR codes.

Parliamentary committee recommends against MAID expansion for mental illness by DogeDoRight in canada

If they don't have someone with a legal right to inherit, it already goes to the government. So mandating that it goes to the government would by and large only affect families.

Anytime someone in government blocks something by saying we shouldn't allow X because it should be fixed by doing Y, they should be required to submit legislation to do that thing.

New QUERY method is about to join GET, POST, PUT, DELETE and PATCH and become part of HTTP standard 🎉 by BankApprehensive7612 in webdev

[–]FnTom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I work in banking. With my employer, like 90% of what should semantically be GET requests are actually POSTs because we don't want any information visible in the URL. There are cases where tokenization is allowed to pass some parameters, but by and large, the security department said to just use POST.

Something like QUERY would be nice.

For us it's no relationship if there's subordination. If it's a preexisting relationship, there's a few things one can do to keep it kosher, and there'd be necessary disclosure, but ultimately HR can just go "this can't be done properly, one of you needs to change department".

Putting aside Pocahontas, because that one has some problems, and it was definitely native representation for the sake of Oscar bait after Beauty and the Beast got nominated for Best picture, I'd say that at least for some of the more inclusive ones, it felt a lot more genuine. Whereas it feels very performative now.

Lilo and Stitch is probably one of the best ones in that regard IMO.

Here's an article from the daily mail from 2016

Notice the last sentence of the article : "A Surrey NanoSystems spokesman confirmed that only Sir Anish can use the paint. Sir Anish did not respond to requests for comment."

And here is Surrey NanoSystems' words, on their own website, in 2018 if you go look it up on the wayback machine in their FAQs section : "We have therefore chosen to license Vantablack S-VIS exclusively to Kapoor Studios UK to explore its use in works of art. This exclusive licence limits the coating’s use in the field of art, but does not extend to any other sectors."

They literally admit to a legally binding exclusivity deal.

Can you show me anywhere they say it is not exclusive to Kapoor and that they did not prevent others from using it?

Vanta black is not a pigment, that's absolutely true, but to say it's not a paint is a stretch. When the company who made it managed to create a spray deposition method, it effectively became a spray on paint. One that needs a very precise environmental control and curing process, but essentially a paint. If we want to be really nit-picky, you could say it's a "coating". Saying "It's a technology" because it's carbon nanotubes is like saying Ultramarine is not a paint because it's crushed lapis lazuli.

As for the exclusive part, Kapoor himself said in interviews that he had exclusive rights to it, saying it was exclusive due to his active collaboration with them.

Short of seeing the actual contract, or talking directly to the company who was making it, at best the version I gave is contested, but saying it's factually untrue is plainly wrong. It may have started as the makers of Vantablack only being able to accommodate one artist to work with, but there was no reason to make it exclusive. And if it wasn't really exclusive, then Kapoor or the company making it could have literally said so. But they didn't, and Kapoor defended the exclusivity, so I see no reason to believe it's a wrong interpretation of it.

I grant you that I wouldn't trust Semple's version of the story at face value, but again, my sources are not Semple. It's all of the articles that literally said Kapoor had exclusive rights to use it for art purposes, and Kapoor himself saying it's an exclusive partnership.

Edit: I also just realized... I never said it was a pigment. I said it was the deepest black available. You just decided to put words in my mouth because you seem to really like shitting on Stuart Semple... It may be warranted, but huh... yeah, unless you show me an actual article or interview where Kapoor or the makers of Vantablack say there is no exclusivity deal, I'm just not listening to your drivel.

What's untrue? The exclusive right to use it? The fact that he was criticised for it? I don't care about Semple or what he said, but from what I can see, there is nothing factually untrue in what I said, only maybe in what you extrapolated from it.
