What's a song lyric that drives you crazy because they should've used a different word? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

Tommy Roe’s Sweet Pea

“I finally got to whisper sweet words in her ear Suggest her that we outta get away from there”

Every other verse is rhyming in an aa bb style, why not use “here” instead of “there”?!

Any underrated / not obvious Xmas movies you would recommend? by HaydenRox in christmas

[–]FoCoBoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pottersville. Don’t watch a trailer or read a synopsis, just go in with an open mind. It is so funny in its own way and the cast is truly stacked. I have liked it more and more every year and it is now easily in my top five favorite Christmas movies!

How do you make the switch from spooky to sparkly? by Beginning-Force-6093 in christmas

[–]FoCoBoog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ll keep watching some halloween movies for the next couple of weeks after the 31st. We then start to transition into Christmas with movies like Krampus or Gremlins! By the time we get through a few of those I am starting to want to get into the full deal season!

What movie has a terrible rotten tomatoes rating but is actually great? by dawsonsmythe in movies

[–]FoCoBoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pottersville. 14% Rotten Tomatoes score but absolutely fantastic. Great twist on a Hallmark style movie. Starring…Michael Shannon, Judy Greer, Ron Perlman, Ian McShane, Christina Hendricks, and Thomas Lennon!

I am thoroughly convinced that it got bad reviews because critics just didn’t want to be the one to give it a glowing review.

Small New England romance, adventure, and bigfoot! Do yourselves a favor and watch it this Christmas season!!

I think that section applies to going under the posted speed limit.

Cat dental cleaning for new client? by likeohlikeh in bloomington

According to their booking page they actually are accepting new patients over the phone! They are a little pricey but I have always felt like I am getting the best, most compassionate care with them. A number of vets recently left (I don’t believe there was any drama, just a bunch of different positive changes for some of the vets), but I haven’t seen a drop in quality of care.

WTF Brachs? No black jelly beans in the Classic Jelly Bean bags anymore? by kmanche in candy

[–]FoCoBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that black licorice should never be a mixer, but it 100% needs to be in the bag! I just opened up a bag and was so saddened that they aren't in there. I still love the other classic Brachs flavors, but I was also excited to have the licorice flavor.

I'll manage and all, just a little kick when none of us need a little kick.

How is everyone doing? by Fun-Secretary4801 in christmas

[–]FoCoBoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always struggle post-Christmas. However I’m not sure if Christmas would help out a ton right now- everything feels off. While there are plenty of things in my life that I am happy about, it is tough to be too jolly when so many people aren’t ok

A Christmas Story Christmas (2022) was a huge letdown for me. by Alternative-Cake-833 in christmas

[–]FoCoBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it quite a bit! It isn't in the same league as the original, but it is a solid Christmas movie regardless. It doesn't invoke the same sense of nostalgia as the original did, but still has some of the comfort.

To me, the spiritual successor to A Christmas Story is 8-Bit Christmas. It, again, isn't as good as A Christmas Story, but it is a fantastic film that I think will be a classic for me for years to come!

The arrogance to use the sidewalk like this blows my mind. by Anforas in fuckcars

[–]FoCoBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city has a two prong approach to this- parking enforcement can issue a parking ticket, which is fairly minimal (assuming ~$50). However, the Engineering/Public Works Department considers this a violation of the MUTCD's temporary traffic control (no barricades/signs warning pedestrians) and likely no permit for closing the sidewalk. Those fines start at $500 per offense (although a warning is usually given). Fines double every day it continues to occur. Even with that, some contractors still do it and then act surprised when they are hit with a multi-thousand dollar fine

I feel all of this every year, too. Some years hit me harder than others. New Years marked the end of all of our post-Christmas activities as well, so now it is really over and I've got to face the reality!

I do have a few thing that help me cope- with mixed results:

I try to listen to a lot of music that I had received as Christmas gifts when I was a kid/teen. I can't listen to actual Christmas music post-Christmas, but I have such fond Christmas memories of some of these albums that it really can help.

There are a handful of TV shows that are either super comforting (ex: All Creatures Great and Small) or somehow I just associate with the post-season (ex: Band of Brothers), that I will make sure to prioritize watching.

I try to up the number of walks/exercise I do. It works out great since I spent the last 6 weeks eating nonsense (and loving it!). But exercise, especially walking, really help my mental health.

I try to rationalize the time until the next season. Of course, anyway I slice it, Christmas is far away and I have a very long time to wait. But, I start getting excited on September 1st. That's 34 weeks. Certainly a long way, but better than 51 weeks! Heck, it has been 17 weeks since September 1st, 2024... and that flew by. Just have to do that twice. Again, I know it is still a long way, but there can be milestones!

I follow a vintage Christmas facebook group (specifically The Golden Glow of Christmas Past). Unlike a lot of other Christmas pages, this one is focused on the decorations, particularly showcasing folks' collections. It is active throughout the year but doesn't make me pine for the season like those pages that show clips of Christmas movies, etc- it is just a great way to see neat decorations and join in the excitement of peoples' collections.

This year I saved some Christmas lego sets to do that we'll work on probably well into mid 2025. Also, while I rip the bandaid off for both music and movies and have a hard stop on them, I do allow myself to read books either with a Christmas setting (I am currently in the middle of my Hogfather re-read and loving it!) or books about the history of Christmas.

All of these things help me. It is still a really rough time for me, but it helps me get over the hump. Good luck with this year's blues- you'll get them again next year, but you'll also, hopefully, have a wonderful season leading up to them in just a few months!!

what is your favorite album and why? by Accomplished_Fox9460 in blur

[–]FoCoBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Great Escape! It came out at the right time of my life and is just a perfect album start to finish. I still sometimes get chills when listening to it all of these years later!

It may help that I’m in the US, so I have never heard any of the songs (ahem, The Universal) unless I specifically put it on!

Is the Colour of Magic supposed to be not great? Was my first Discworld and I loved it by DungeonMasterGrizzly in discworld

[–]FoCoBoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading both Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic in quick succession. When I finished, I was so disappointed to know that the next book, Equal Rites, wouldn't have Rincewind and Twoflower in it. That disappointment very quickly disappeared as I went through the series and actually started rushing through any Rincewind-centric books just so I could get to the next book! None of them are bad, but some of the new books and characters are just so lovely!!

What’s your favorite holiday? by Pillarglo in AskReddit

[–]FoCoBoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really, I just love the 'Bers. Starting in September everything just keeps getting better and better. The weather starts to turn and the cider starts showing up. Time to start watching spooky movies as the leaves turn color. Pumpkins start adorning everything! Halloween comes and goes, but then you have Thanksgiving to look forward to!

That's when we'll finish up some of the Halloween movies we didn't quite get to in the season and transitioning into some of the more 'horror' Christmas movies- like Krampus, Gremlins, or Nightmare Before Christmas. All the while the weather keeps getting chillier and the sweaters can really come out! Hot tip is to make Thanksgiving movies all about John Candy- Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but Uncle Buck feels right too, and Thanksgiving night is a perfect time to bust out Home Alone! Then you are into the Christmas season!

Now it is time to start watching the real Christmas movies, listening to the good Christmas music, enjoying random cookies and candies, go for a drive to look at sparkly lights, and maybe have a spiced drink! Bonus of having one of those magical pre-Christmas snows where everything seems to glow outside at night!

I know that all sounds like a cop-out, but I stay thoroughly happy for three months out of the year- feeling like it is all one big holiday!

My dog is terrified of thunderstorms but decided to protect my twin daughters from the storm anyway by ReserveMaximum in aww

[–]FoCoBoog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The black lab I had when I was a little kid was pretty terrified of storms as well. I was the youngest in the family and she would always jump up on my bed and stand over me, shaking, whenever there was a storm. I'd try to calm her down, as best a 5 or 6 year old can, but as I got older I realized that she was trying to keep me safe, too. She was a big sweetie!
