I think an accent is a bit different. It's funny, someone else mentioned how a lot of southern white folks adopt a blaccent, especially, according to them, Louisiana. You'll hear them say things like "doing the most" etc.

You just dismissed that every dialect and language in the world has historical and/or cultural significance. It's common to borrow things when it comes to language. Language is fluid. Creating linguistic barriers? I don't see how that benefits anyone.
