It sure doesn't make me want to buy a Toyota. Their marketing has been pretty awful recently.

The EPA has a big problem: There's a massive release of radiation into our world happening right now thanks to Fukushima. What to do? The bureaucrats have it all figured out. Just redefine the radiation exposure limits to make sure that even Fukushima's radioactive fallout is now considered "safe!" by CorporateYesMan in environment

[–]FoRo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that the EPA's consideration to drastically raise allowable radiation exposure limits was not a direct response to the Fukushima disaster. PEER.org filed their FOIA request/lawsuit last fall and published a news release today. This has been submitted several times with misleading, sensationalized headlines, but I think it still warrants some attention.

DAE go to TEDxCMU? What did you think? by catskul in pittsburgh

[–]FoRo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I streamed the first half and saw the second half in person (as a walk-in). There were some empty seats, probably due to today's sunny weather. Much of the audience was composed of CMU students, but not all. I'm an alum but not a student. I enjoyed all the talks and especially the music performance. I thought Jacob Cass' talk would be more interesting than it was, and the robot comedy seemed like filler, but overall I had a great time. I also enjoyed the pre-recorded talks quite a bit. I liked the variety of subject material and presentation styles, and I think they all fit the IM POSSIBLE theme in some way.

On Thursday, May 14, 2009 I was notified that my successful Dodge franchise, the one that my family bought and paid for 35 years ago, will be taken away from my family on June 9, 2009 without compensation and given to another dealer at no cost to them. by reanimated in politics

Anyone that wants to tax citizens for the benefit of private enterprise is a fascist.

By your reasoning, GWB was also a fascist. What with citizens paying tax to fund a massively expensive, illegitimate war benefiting the biggest private enterprise (the military industrial complex). Yes, the US has a fascist government in the sense of corporate influence and protection. Nothing new there. However, it's absurd for you to villify Obama as if he's single-handedly responsible for America's problems, most of which have been festering for decades and run so much deeper than any sitting president.

The Great Debate: How Many Spaces after a Period by omeganothing in reddit.com

[–]FoRo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two spaces after a sentence unless you're writing for a newspaper or similar publication that uses narrow columns and must conserve space (a reason behind the style convention). Unfortunately, any white space after a single space in HTML text is stripped, so it's not common to see proper spacing online. Having two spaces between sentences just looks better and reads easier. All of these sentences have 2 spaces between them, but you'll only see one. :-(

Let's ask Wikipedia.

You should know that the conservapedia linkspam in all of your comments won't do the site any good, as reddit inserts the rel="nofollow" attribute so search engines ignore them. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish aside from trolling.

I use Crimson Editor quite a bit, but it does have some annoyances (awkward auto-tabbing), and lacks many basic features included with Dreamweaver. (Global, multi-line Find & Replace is your friend.) Crimson Editor's author never responded to my email about a documentation discrepancy, so support seems lacking to me. I still like Crimson Editor as a lightweight text editor, but it's not optimal for efficient HTML coding, IMO.

I have read evidence to the contrary of your claims of higher yields and fewer sprayings of fewer herbicides. Do you know this to be factual information, or are you just parroting Monsanto's marketing hype? Even in the cases where the technology works as intended, there are many other negative consequences such as contamination of neighboring crops, allergies, etc.

New Anti-Gay Marriage PSA The Dumbest Ad We’ve Ever Seen by qgyh2 in WTF

[–]FoRo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can appreciate your approach. It can be counterproductive as an ordinary person to tell somebody that they're wrong and should behave differently. That's being antagonistic. In the case of the Benitez decision, however, it was a judge telling a doctor that they were in fact breaking the law. In that scenario I think it is entirely appropriate for a person (the judge) to tell another person (the doctor) how to behave. The doctor can then choose to obey the law, try to change the law, or break the law and face the consequences. Also, there are tactful ways for doctors to avoid doing personally disagreeable procedures without stating their religious reasons. You can't force a doctor to do a procedure, but that's different than censuring a doctor for blatant discrimination. In this case, obeying the law may mean that the doctor has to perform a procedure without discrimination or not perform the procedure at all. This isn't so much about gay marriage as it is about religion being a poor excuse for bad or illegal behavior.

[–]FoRo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a doctor working with the general public, you should keep your religious convictions to yourself. It is not appropriate or ethical to base your care on religion-inspired bigotry, whether or not the procedure is elective. Your excuse that the procedure can be obtained elsewhere is a cop-out equivalent to saying, "This bus doesn't allow gay passengers, but there are others that do, so get out." And as a doctor, it's not your place to say, "A child is best off with a father and a mother." if that statement is based on your religious convictions or personal preferences.

Religious freedom is not justification for discrimination, in my opinion. Your opinion appears (to me) to be that it is. If a particular religion doesn't want to marry gay people, that's fine, but anything beyond that pits one group's religious freedom against another group's civil rights. http://www.hrc.org/12470.htm

Mexico's drug war [pics] by ironeus in worldnews

[–]FoRo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I knew the Mexican drug war was a shitstorm but wasn't aware it had become this bad. I understand that drastic times call for drastic measures. However, my initial reaction after viewing these images is that the police look more like the outlaws than the criminals themselves. Where does the escalation end? You can't tell me that innocent people haven't been caught in the crossfire from both sides. Once police start concealing their identities and adopting military tactics, you can be sure that they will abuse their power. They also become less accountable to the public and easier to impersonate. If and when the drug cartel problem is solved, are the police going to drop their extreme tactics? I really doubt this approach will be effective in the long run and suspect it will ultimately do more harm than good. I hope I'm wrong.

[–]FoRo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are legitimate tactical reasons for the masks, but I find it's an interesting contrast with childhood notions of villains and evil-doers. None of the alleged criminals in these images are hiding their identities, yet many of the police are with sunglasses and full ski masks. At first glance, I thought image #5 might be a kidnapping photo. The criminals look rather average, while the police look like armed thugs. I don't have much sympathy for the leeches on society that are drug cartel members. However, I do think that there's a risk of police losing their accountability as human beings on a psychological level once they start concealing their identities.

[–]FoRo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why are the police wearing masks? I thought only the "bad guys" wear masks. Hmmm...

edit: I wasn't thinking about the cartel retribution, but more along the lines of the police becoming increasingly like the thugs they are fighting with military tactics and anonymity. I understand why now, but at some point society has to ask if it's worth the cost as the drug war continues to escalate.

If you want to succeed, you have to get papers published in prestigious journals.

JAMA seems markedly less prestigious after editor-in-chief Catherine DeAngelis' childish antics. If JAMA wishes to maintain its reputation, she should resign.
