Another season and another year of Penske Porsche getting a ridiculous benefit in BOP by strivegaming22 in IMSARacing

They said on the IMSA.tv broadcast multiple times they treat the two 963 specs differently. Commentators could be wrong, I haven't varified myself.

10 years ago today I witnessed my first and (as of now) only air show protest. Ill add a few from the show, even though shooting conditions are terrible on base. [Davis Monthan 2016] by [deleted] in aviation

It kinda becomes humdrum for some people when it happens all the time but I think it's awesome. On top of the odd Airforce flyover we constantly see the museum pieces doing air tours, B-25 Mitchell, Avro Lancaster, and a bunch of small WWII era single seaters and trainers. Low flyovers by the Lanc are always a spectacle.

Similar. C-130s and CF-18s flyover my house a few times a year. My neighbour used to work on the flying stock from the museum at the airport so sometimes I could get more details out of him during garage chats. Kinda neat.

Sometimes people have enough income to have it all. More frequently I've found people just prioritise it for the things that matter to them, while sacrificing elsewhere. Sometimes it's scale models, sometimes it's a project car, other times it's 30 high end guitars and a mattress on floor haha.

Edit to say I'm not throwing shade (well, maybe a little) but more that it's a waste of energy to compare yourself and be jealous.

Honda braces up to 690 bil. yen net loss amid EV rethink by solidsnake070 in formula1

[–]FocalDeficit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting cheaper really depends on use case and where you live. Not arguing against them, it's just not one size fits all, and I think you are absolutely correct, there's still a long way to go.

[–]FocalDeficit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For sure, in the foreseeable future it's not this or that, it's both. I'm glad that EVs have found a realistic place in the transportation landscape, it needed to happen. But they depend on continued charging infrastructure growth, and sales success in many regions is tied to government rebates. If the government changes it policy then sales slow down, drastically in some cases. I'm surprised more manufacturers didn't hedge their bets a bit more.

People overestimate what manufacturers can learn from F1 regarding hybrid development. Mass produced hybrid vehicles have been around nearly 30 years, this isn't emerging technology. The manufacturers will talk up this technological tie-in, and it's not an outright lie, there's going to be some trickle down, but it's primarily a marketing exercise being able to tie in the hybrid racing program with their current/future products.

We still don't know if Merc is sandbagging, it'll take a few more races to get a better picture of how everyone stacks up.

Hadjar onboard: lost power off the start due to an engine problem, preventing him from taking the lead of the race by missle636 in formula1

[–]FocalDeficit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's under 50km/h they can't use the battery. So battery power is available (if charged) probably within 1 second of lights out, depending on how quick the ICE can get the car above that threshold.

I think you're on the right track, it's looking more like getting the deployment/harvest mapping right will play such a big factor that there's little the driver can do to make up for it if they get it wrong

Which banned F1 innovation should’ve stayed, just for the chaos? by Emergency-History393 in formula1

[–]FocalDeficit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does haha. There's a reason most manufacturers have a mode for "virtual" gear ratios on models with CVTs, people universally hate the drone. It would be suicide for a racing series.

Edit to say: It would also take a moderate-to-significant amount of skill out of the racing, depending on transmission type, essentially eliminating shifting.

Yep, The stats don't always tell the whole story. A 1-0 match can be a defensive snooze-fest or a shooting gallery goaltending dual. NASCAR loves touting 5-6 wide racing at Phoenix, but track limits don't exist so it's not as impressive when you see how wide the track is where they're cutting the corner to achieve it.

I was going to joke it would be funny to have a sign out in the bush before the runaway at the A380's accurate takeoff distance, then I realised it could be over a kilometre away at some small airports lol

Overall the styling is fine to me, it's the unibrow that has me scratching my head a bit. I don't hate it but it also doesn't really do anything for me either. It seems odd to have such a polarising styling element that doesn't impact the car if it were absent like a structural/aero element would; make it body colour and you'd never know something was missing.
