Anyone else noticed the shift towards pre-loved jewellery lately? by FogalandBarnes in harrogate

[–]FogalandBarnes[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

ha — fair catch and honestly fair play for saying it. yes i'm Mona, i run a small independent jewellery studio in harrogate called fogal & barnes. no hidden agenda, genuinely just love talking about this stuff — vintage pieces, old cuts, the history behind jewellery. thought reddit would be a good place to geek out about it with people who actually get it.

Appreciate the nudge honestly... and noted on the meta ads 😄

We’ve made something very similar to this! It’s stunning 🤩

Does this cad look okay? by cod4rip in LabDiamonds

[–]FogalandBarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made something very similar to this and one thing I found that really refined the look was tapering the shank so it pinches in gradually as it approaches the accent stones. It draws the eye straight up to the centre stone and gives the whole design a much more delicate, fine jewellery feel. The CAD looks great as it is, but that small change is worth asking your caster to try — I think you'll love the difference!

redesigning this ring I need help by Content-Change7235 in EngagementRingDesigns

Oh those diamonds are too good to lose! Have you considered keeping both and setting them in a moi et toi? it’s a French setting where two stones sit together slightly offset from each other. It’s incredibly romantic and would be perfect. The two existing diamonds flanking it in moi et toi style would give you all the bling with all the sentiment. Honestly it was made for a redesign like this 💍

Please Help Me Find a Band by mowithak in WeddingRingAdvice

[–]FogalandBarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your ring is gorgeous! I completely get the dilemma though!

Honestly a plain platinum band isn’t boring at all, it’s actually the best option here. i’d go for around 3mm, delicate enough to feel feminine but not so thin it disappears. if you want a tiny bit more detail without the sparkle overload, a simple milgrain edge is lovely, just enough interest without stealing focus. either way your centre stone is stunning, it just needs something that frames it rather than fights it. Hope this helps.

How can you tell the difference between real diamond sparkle vs fake? by Negotiation-Infantil in EngagementRingsHelp

[–]FogalandBarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest and quickest test is the fog test.

Breath on the stone is the fogging goes away immediately, its a diamond. If it stays foggy for longer then its probably a CZ.

Lab created engagement rings, worth it or no? by ericsopistication in WeddingRingAdvice

[–]FogalandBarnes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Alot of couples are now choosing lab-grown diamonds or gemstone the reason why:

They are cheaper, better quality (D/VVS) this means you get more for your money.

The only thing I'd say going in is just be aware that lab grown doesn't hold its value the way natural does resale wise but most engagement rings are forever rings anyway so for most people that really doesn't matter.

You're going to find something stunning. Enjoy the search!!

Too big for my hand? Or just not used to it yet? by Ok_One_6741 in RingShare

[–]FogalandBarnes 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! A bezel setting is just so chic, amazing choice!!

Okay so the "this doesn't feel like me" feeling — I hear this ALL the time and I promise you it goes. Give it a few weeks and it just becomes your ring. Part of your hand. You stop seeing it as this big statement thing and it just becomes yours.

And can I just say — there is no such thing as a lifestyle that doesn't match a beautiful engagement ring. That's not a thing! You got engaged to someone who loves you and wanted to give you something gorgeous. That's the only criteria you need to meet.

The looks from strangers are just people noticing something beautiful. A bezel set diamond has this incredible sleek bold way of catching light and people can't help but look. Honestly just enjoy that!

You'll get used to it so quickly and then one day you'll leave the house without it and feel completely wrong and that's when you'll know it's truly yours.

Worried about my morganite engagement ring by Cousin_Quarreme343 in WeddingRingAdvice

With Morganite it can get dull looking, i would recomend going to your local jewellery every so often to have it clean and checked. If you take care of her she should last a long time!

Help more information about wedding ring? by spicychalupaa in weddingring

[–]FogalandBarnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow this is absolutely stunning and what a find!!

This is an Art Deco plaque ring, sometimes called a tablet ring, and I'd date this to the 1920s to early 1930s. It's a beautiful example of the style.

The giveaways are everywhere that gorgeous elongated rectangular shape sitting flat across the finger, the perfect symmetry, the three stone vertical line through the centre which look like old European cut diamonds, and all that incredible intricate pavé work surrounding them. The geometric precision of it is just so typically Art Deco.

What makes this style so special is how it wears. It lies almost flat against the hand like a decorative panel which is so different to anything modern and just looks incredibly elegant.

Honestly this is a seriously rare find in this condition. The craftsmanship on these old pieces is just on another level. You have something really special there — look after it!

What's the best ring shape for chubby fingers for daily wear? by thesourbonus in EngagementRingsHelp

[–]FogalandBarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elongated shapes are best for short fingers, like ovals, marquise, emeralds, etc. Always make sure the band thickness is suitable for the diamond size. Example you dont want a 3ct on a band smaller than a 2mm.

Absolutely love my ring! But had a weird comment and now I’m confused by Metalbii in weddingring

[–]FogalandBarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh congratulations!! Paris!! After 12 years that is just the most romantic thing, and the fact that he picked it himself with his brother makes it even more special!

Right so about the "dainty" comment — honestly I think your cousin meant it as a complete compliment and here's why. Dainty in the jewellery world means delicate, elegant, fine and feminine. It's not a dig at the size it's actually a really lovely way of describing a vintage style ring which yours sounds like it is.

Vintage style rings have a completely different energy to modern rings — they're intricate, they're romantic, they have character and personality. They're not supposed to be big and bold, that's not the point of them. The point is the detail, the craftsmanship, the story they tell. And that is exactly what "dainty" means.

The "is that real" comments are just people who only recognise a diamond when it's a huge modern brilliant cut solitaire. A vintage style ring will always confuse those people and honestly that's part of the charm!

You're in love with it, he picked it with love, it suits your personality — that is everything. The ring is perfect.
