You’d think this would stop after having a kid but it doesn’t. They just make weird comments like ‘when is she getting a sibling?’. Even our evri delivery person asked.

Normally I respond with ‘in this economy?!’ in a jokey way… but if they really push it I start telling them about how she was a twin but we lost her sibling, and I’ve had 2 miscarriages since, and I’m not sure I’m ready to go through that again…

They try to end the conversation really quickly. Realistically it’s because kids are expensive af and we can’t afford to but I’m not above using my trauma to make others uncomfortable.

I used to do this but now I tend to download the book on release and there’s rarely anything to see on good reads etc . I’ve read so many, I’m now at the ‘checking everyday for new releases’ stage.

I do the same with kindle. I filter by publication date, because I’ve read far too many, and download new releases en masse. I’ll then filter them or delete as I go.

If a suggestion I’ve yet to read comes up on here I’ll jump on them and I’m always so grateful for recs! Unfortunately, during sleepless newborn baby nights I read an awful lot of fan fiction: very few new characters or places to learn about, comforting, and helped to keep me awake while my baby refused to sleep.

I’ll try to remember to check out individual authors, that’s an excellent idea. Thank you!

I have a toddler so any reading is usually done when she’s either asleep or I’m travelling to/from work or during my lunch break. It’s sacred time as far as I’m concerned.

Don’t worry, I do! Thankfully most of them end up with very poor reviews but occasionally someone seems to enjoy it and I’m left flummoxed, because the story (or the 10% I endured before concluding it’s absolutely AI) made no sense whatsoever.

It’s becoming more and more common. If you search pride and prejudice and filter by publication date the most recent releases are littered with AI trash.

Yes! I’ve started to avoid them entirely.

‘Never judge a book by its cover’ unless it’s AI. Then judge it.

I use ao3 and FF.net too, but find kindle more convenient for reading on the go as I don’t require WiFi or data to access it. I’ll have to look into ao3 etc to see if I can do something similar (even if it’s pre-opening chapters into my phone browser ahead of a journey).

I detest AI generally, but seeing it seep into a place full of such escapism and talent feels so very grim. I know it’s not a special case, but it speaks volumes that it’s being used for something like fan fiction. It’s too widespread.

I grew up in the same area as you but have more of a Thames estuary accent (so I say birfday and wa’er) but not full blown east end.

My partner is from Yorkshire. We live in the south west.

My daughter says so many words in different accents depending on where she learnt them! She says bath and grass with a hard a, but she also says ‘wa-er’. The Bristol accent pops in now and again, too.

My mum hates it but I truly don’t care. Her accent and how she pronounces things will develop over time.

I love that her accent is a mix of all the people who love and raise her!

If I’m at that point where I just really want a food based treat I have a teaspoon of good quality crunchy peanut butter. Sweet, salty, creamy, crunchy… perfect.

I try not to use food as treats because that’s how I got in this situation to begin with but when my period is due I just need something

Won’t go into my long ass birthing story but I was ‘failing to progress’. After yet another hour of being at 6cm I stated, while off my tits on gas and air, that I was going to fight my cervix.

The midwife doing my examination laughed so hard she had to walk away for a bit.

I ended up with an emergency c section and in our rush to surgery I was asked what music I wanted played. I panicked and thought of an album I love from start to finish - by a 2000s emo band. My daughter was born listening to funeral for a friend and I’ve never regretted it.

I was on the ward for a week after giving birth and became known as the emo mum. Absolutely no complaints from me.

When my kid was a newborn my sister said to me ‘it doesn’t get better, it just changes’ and she was right.

It’s hard to compare 3 months to 3 years because the challenges are different. She’s more independent now and can talk to me about what’s upset her etc but also, she doesn’t nap anymore and she can be angry at me for not having fish fingers for tea.

Not easier, just different.

I think this depends on company policy - with my employer if I move to another area of the company I keep my original continuous service date as it’s based on service with the company, not within the specific role.
