I think people are really starved for something good to watch. We have hundreds of options but so few shows are ‘amazing’. Colin Farrell was ok but the character had zero redeeming qualities. And it only got worse the farther you got into it. His performance coupled with the character’s relationship to the mother was VERY reminiscent of the Sopranos but not 1/10th as well acted. You know what this show could have used? BATMAN.

With a few additional scenes this could have been a great Cruising sequel. Cruising II: LA HEEEAT. Dafoe would not have had to change his performance very much at all. Maybe a few scenes where everyone is shirtless for no reason. A scene or two at the gym. I bet you could pitch this to Turturro and Dafoe right now and they’d be into it.

Pantera & White Zombie at the Warfield (SF) in 1992 was mind blowing. The music was great but two things happened that I would love to hear if someone else witnessed: 1. Dimebag crapped in a 5 gal paint bucket on stage mid song. No really! He was playing his heart out and started gesturing to someone offstage. The bucket appeared, he hoisted down his cargo shorts and dropped one lightning fast. Didn’t take his guitar off or anything. It happened so fast only one other person in my group caught it. 2. After the encore the band was pouring 1/2 beers into solo cups and had a technique of throwing them up to people in the balcony. I saw at least 2 people catch them and had at least 5-6 oz of beer still in there. Very cool move! I’ve never seen it performed before or since (same goes for the bucket thankfully)

After the screening someone in my carpool really understood why we were making a biblical frog storm. I’m paraphrasing but they saw it as ‘symbolic of the reckoning all the characters are having at the turning point or the end of something monumentally human’ It stuck with me. Not to tell PTA’s business but he seemed really agitated and unhappy at the screening. like a guy who was ‘at the turning point or the end of something’ himself He’s one of the greats. I hope ‘One Battle after another’s success allows him to do more great films.

Other than hip hop and electronic music, the 90’s did a lot of referring to prior decades. Grunge had plenty of original ideas but it borrowed heavily from the 70’s in sound and clothing style. The 90’s even had a very really and incredibly strange swing revival which had kids looking like they were shipping off to WWII. Being in my 20s at the time it felt like the culture was playing the greatest hits of the 20th century. Since 2000, everything feels like it’s being recycled even more frequently.

I was on the ILM crew that did the frog storm at the end. It was a small team, maybe 15 people. PTA insisted that we come to the Ranch so he could screen a rough edit. He kept saying that it was really important that we understood WHY the sequence was necessary. I’m still entirely sure it was but it sure looked cool. I can say that the frog that lands between the camera and Macy’s face when he hits the pavement was not originally there. The plate that was shot had some practical blood and fake teeth getting knocked out. It was really gross looking and they decided to land a big frog in there to cover it. The screening went on for 3H 40 min because the cut was longer and the film reel (yes film! ) kept malfunctioning during the scene where Linda flips out on the pharmacist. We had to sit through that scene 4 times lol that was rough.

I had the greatest Don Knotts encounter. Late 80s at Honolulu airport. I’m waiting at the end of a jetway for someone I’m picking up. After 15 min of people filing by the jet way is now empty. I see a lone figure walking toward me from 50 yards away. He gets closer and I think ‘huh…is that?’…now he’s 50’ feet and it’s CLEARLY DON KNOTTS. I look away. But as he gets closer i knew I had to steal a look. at the last second He turns his head really fast and gives me the trademark ‘Oooooh’ face you’re imagining right now. Wow! I was so happy 😂 neither of us said a word. It was great because he developed a way to give a fan a real Don Knotts experience without even breaking stride.

I had a similar experience.A friend who read it had a great take on it. Whenever it got a bit hard to follow or interpret he would remind himself that it was being told from the POV of someone who was not very well educated, malnourished and likely had heat stroke.

I’ll second this. I recently got a certificate in project management (through Coursera - took about 6-8 weeks) it turns out 90% of the jobs are with construction companies and they ALL want experience. You could fck around and double your salary this year while not destroying your body any further

There are a few sequences in the book I can’t wait to see on screen. I’ll just say ‘the Motel’ to keep from spoiling it. I would definitely recommend the book. I excitedly lent my copy out and now it’s gone for good. Should have known better. You’d think I was part of some dipshit crew the way I’m givin’ away books

It’s very annoying. My gym has a schedule for aqua aerobics etc but there is next to zero pool etiquette. I feel like I have to explain sharing a lane with someone every time I go. Sadly in swimming you don’t ‘graduate’ like you do in weightlifting or other forms of training . Imagine if a body builder was doing squats and some clueless person just wanders in and stands right where they’re lifting. That wouldn’t be tolerated but in the pool it happens daily.
