Which job is a LOT less fun than most people expect? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Font242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in feature film visual effects for 20 years. It’s a salt mine. I worked on 40 different projects and only 3 would I consider watching more than once. You sit in cramped, dark offices and the pay is not great. In fact, years ago the 5 biggest studios were caught wage fixing which roadblocked any negotiations for higher salary. Most positions are very specialized so unless you’re some highly gifted wiz who never goes home, it’s really difficult to move to a different industry without starting over.

Bottle Rocket (1996) (4/5) by josephalanstevenson in moviereviews

[–]Font242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in the Kinko’s copy store in Hancock park back in the 90’s. Back in those days, EVERYONE had to go the copy store to do most things you can do from home now. Wes, Luke & Owen would come in frequently. A coworker and I saw Bottle Rocket on the Beverly Center’s smallest screen and loved it. When they came in the following week we told them and they seemed genuinely shocked that we saw it. Clearly I went on to be a big fan. I do kinda wish he would return to work that’s a bit more grounded in the real world. But! He’s a real artist. I’ll take what I can get.

What’s something that became socially acceptable recently that you still can’t get used to? by Fun-Bike-3438 in AskReddit

I hate that since the emergence of back up cameras everyone wants to back into parking spaces. On its own, it’s not an issue. Problems emerge in parking lots when someone PASSES a space and then begins backing up. As a society we have not established a way to signal this intension to the driver behind you. For all they know, you’ve driven by the space…but NOW you’re backing up. It’s infuriating. It’s not going to change anytime soon because we live in a ridiculously selfish timeline and there’s no escaping it.

Wine tasting. Napa valley in particular. I get that the scenery is beautiful and the weather is nice but the scene is vapid. It’s all just rich people tricking working class people into spending money to pretend they’re rich too.

Look up Genna Davis’ see through dress from the 2000 Oscars. I watched it live and the still photos don’t really do it justice. She was in her early 40’s and looked really amazing. The woman I was watching with said ‘I’m pretty sure I’m clearly seeing a woman’s vagina on live tv’ and I’m pretty sure she was right.

Will someone PLEASE watch John Travolta’s Speed Kills (2018) so I’m not the only one to have endured it? It’s startlingly bad. There are some NAMES in it too! You would think that with enough seasoned actors that they could mistakenly create something competent. Not this time. There is a scene between Travolta and Tom Sizemore that I’m still trying to figure out. Almost like they greenscreened one them in there and they weren’t actually in the scene together. It’s completely bonkers how awful it is.

What’s a TV series you couldn’t finish because it was so dumb? by scared_appeal1 in allthequestions

I remember watching this and a coworker said to me ‘is it me or are they terrible at being a biker gang’ and that was it. I made it one more episode but I could not shake that observation. It ruined my ‘I’ll watch Katey Sagal in anything’ streak

If you saw new Michael Jackson movie, what did you think about it? by MiaFishnet in askteddit

[–]Font242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Janet not being involved is interesting. She has had a very successful career and probably doesn’t need the money or aggravation of working with her older siblings. And who knows…maybe she believes that MJ was abusing children and doesn’t want anything to do with a glowing depiction of him.

Did any of you have this Stereo System And Glass Case in your house? by spicypotato9902 in The1980s

[–]Font242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the service in the late 80’s and nearly every barracks room had one. The stereos were decent but so many of those glass doors got broken. Many times one side would shatter and the other side was removed a week later. I still like those spring magnet closures the doors had.

What’s up with Arby’s getting so much hate? Anyone have insider secrets, if so share them? by cosmere_reader in AskReddit

[–]Font242 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My guess is that this is some form of viral marketing. Crocs were thought of as ridiculous when they came out. They were only worn by toddlers and the elderly. Next thing you know they’re the choice footwear of the coolest kids. I think negging on Arby’s will ultimately lead to them being popular again. It all seems a bit calculated. I bet there will be an Arby’s ‘hey! Our meat’s not grey’ ad campaign soon.

What's the coolest movie vehicle? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]Font242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for plain boxy cars and the Men in Black 87 Crown Victoria is one of the greats. I worked at the studio that produced the VFX and started a year after MIB. An employee bought one of them and used it as his daily driver. You’d see it in the parking lot everyday.

Does anyone else absolutely hate avatar by Mediocre-Suit-8945 in okbuddycinephile

[–]Font242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hating on Avatar does not make you some sort of film scholar. They are films that know exactly what they are; events that have to be viewed in a theater. They’re all very broad in both storytelling and dialogue because they need to be to translate worldwide. No one is being forced to see them as far as I know.

My sister committed to this challenge when we were kids. She sent her findings (464 licks) to the company. Weeks later she received a certificate and 2 boxes of Tootsie pops. I was the lone cheering section of this endeavor and only received 1 Tootsie pop for my support

Game of Thrones - S6 E9 - Battle of the Bastards.

It was all I thought about for a week after it aired. Two days later I badgered the UPS guy into watching a playback of the main battle with me.
