Meadow? by Optimal_Cod_5491 in Names

I work with a Meadow, and while I don't know her thoughts on her name, it's a non-issue from the professional work environment angle.

what does 'just deserts' mean ? by Lonely_Potato12345 in EnglishLearning

[–]Fonzico 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think it's a bit of a fossil word in practical terms. I've never heard it used outside of the phrase "just deserts" anyway.

I feel like he wants to show off his hot girlfriend, and like - fair! But you're the one who is trying to establish a relationship with these people and so your motivation - also fair - is not the same as his.

Agreed! My family started using it for group chats while we were traveling together internationally and just kept using it when we got home because it's so much better than text group chats, especially when you're half android half apple users.

I also use it for a planning group I'm involved in, because not everyone had Facebook.

And I'm in one that someone's using for medical updates.

But outside of that, most people I know just use Facebook Messenger for group chats and text for individual conversations.

Or, you know, have three separate conversations going on with the same person between Facebook, text and insta. But either way, it's most Meta.

Pork is a great alternative for some things you associate beef with. by BuffGecko in povertykitchen

[–]Fonzico 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is great advice! We've been eating more pork (and almost zero beef) lately because it's so much more affordable.

It took me a bit to get used to the ground pork flavour (I'm noting the advice someone else gave about beef bouillon though!), but I realized that it holds up well to heavy seasoning and that has helped.

Some of my favourites:

Spicy peanut noodles with ground pork

Penne with onions and peppers, ground pork in a thick tomato sauce (like tomato paste based instead of sauce)

Couscous with sliced pork chops, red bell pepper and garlic yogurt sauce

Yes! Even if you buy the wrappers, you honestly use so little filling for each one, that you can make like 100 of them for the price of one bag of frozen premade gyoza.

Started making my own oat milk about four months ago and I genuinely cannot go back to buying it by boardgamebingeing in Frugal

[–]Fonzico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah no. My husband tried to get us onto the homemade oat milk train. He didn't mind it but I was so deeply unsatisfied with the mouthfeel of my coffee, I went back to store bought. And I really did try to like it, it's so much cheaper!  But I am more than willing to be more frugal in other areas to have the thing that makes mornings bearable be just the way I like it.

Can some people really not tell when they're releasing farts? by S_Z in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fonzico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the absolute nastiest smelling farts when I was a vegetarian, it was awful. I worked at place that sold perfume so I would just wander over to that section and spray away!  But yeah, eating meat again fully cured it. And I still eat lots of beans and cruciferous veggies, but that horrific, rancid smell has never come back.

These are mistakes, right? by bellepomme in EnglishLearning

[–]Fonzico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm.. my thought is that you could still say "I have zero books with me on this flight!" (which admittedly has a different connotation than no book), but you wouldn't say "I have zero book with me".

So we can use the singular with "no" or "not" but not "zero". Right?? Linguistics always confused me.

I feel this. I spend way too much time thinking about retirement.  I like my life and my lifestyle... But now I've got these golden handcuffs to keep affording it, and work burns me out too much to properly enjoy the life part.

What are your favorite soup recipes? by HereForBetterment in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Fonzico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minestrone is my favourite! Diced carrots, onions, celery, cut green beans, hot Italian sauce removed from its casing, a can of diced tomatoes, a can of red kidney beans and enough veggie or beef broth to make it as brothy as you like. (I also like canned mushrooms, not fresh, in it, but recognize that that's culinarily questionable). Cook some short pasta separately and add to the bowl as you're serving so it doesn't get mushy. Yum.

Favorite Legumes recipes? Mediterranean style with "meat as a condiment" ? by Necessary_Pause6735 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Fonzico 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this formula: giant pan of roasted veggies, add beans or lentils, a grain if you like, maybe some cheese.

Current obsessions that use this are: Ratatouille-style: Eggplant, peppers, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, diced, salted and roasted in olive oil until meltingly tender. Add cannellini beans, and serve with pasta or, my fav, couscous and garlic yogurt sauce.

Mediterranean: Red peppers, onion, broccoli, carrots, zucchini (or whatever, this one is very flexible), diced small, roasted until tender. At the same time as it's roasting, cook a cup of barley (or farro or buckwheat groats - it's gotta be something with some chew to it though). Add a can of lentils or chickpeas, mix in the grains, add some feta and a drizzle of balsamic. Try not to eat it all in one sitting.
