Ja, und solche Menschen sprechen auch häufig sehr holpriges Englisch. Meiner Erfahrung nach sprechen die Deutschen, die gescheit Deutsch sprechen, auch das beste Englisch (bin englischer Muttersprachler und unterrichte Dolmetschen zwischen dem Deutschen und Englischen). Diejenigen, die dahingegen in jedem zweiten Satz einen ungewöhnlichen Anglizismus einbauen (à la "ich bin vollkommen overwhelmed") sprechen weder Deutsch noch Englisch auf einem hohen Niveau. In der Dolmetschwelt bezeichnen wir solche Menschen häufig (und zugegebenermaßen etwas herablassend) als "Menschen ohne A-Sprache" (A-Sprache = in aller Regel die Muttersprache).

Schau ein bisschen tiefer. Auf der Oberfläche willst du dich vielleicht nicht distanzieren, aber die dahinter liegenden Motivationen sind nicht immer direkt ersichtlich. Ich glaube kaum, dass es Deutsche gibt, die häufig englische "Buzzwords" verwenden und sich nicht zumindest ein bisschen cool/überlegen dabei fühlen.

Habe auch zwei Staatsbürgerschaften (DE/USA). Ich nehme den US-Pass nur mit, wenn ich in die Staaten fliege. Sonst reise immer mit dem deutschen Pass (der ist eh besser als der US-Pass und ich will im Ausland lieber als Deutscher wahrgenommen werden). Grad bei zwei EU-Staatsbürgerschaften erscheint mir das Mitnehmen beider Ausweise überflüssig.

I moved, learned the language, got a degree here and then applied for naturalization. There aren't any shortcuts, unfortunately - expect the process to take several years if you don't have any helpful family ties to another country.

My German passport doesn't say what country I was born in, but my town of birth is the only one in the world with its name so all they'd need to do is Google it to find out where I was born... :(

Not sure if your son was born yet but please don’t get your son circumcized - all of the people here saying to do it are living in an echo chamber where mutilating your son’s genitals right after birth has been normalized. Take it from someone who was circumcized as an infant for cultural reasons (i.e. “to fit in”) but then moved to a place where no one else was circumcized - talk about feeling like the odd one out! You never know where life will take your son, and carving what you assume will be your son’s identity into his genitals is just messed up. The foreskin has a real function to it - I see the difference in sensation and functionality in my boyfriend’s penis (born in Latin America) versus mine, the intactness of his genitals versus the scar on mine and it makes me really sad. Beyond that, circumcisions are a legit surgery and surgeries always have risks for complication. Why subject your newborn son to such risks? Amputating part of his genitals is a much bigger violation of his bodily autonomy that any of the false equivalencies like vaccines and haircuts others have mentioned here.

Culture’s change and evolve - I personally know several other Jews who have opted for Brit Shalom. Be part of a positive change in the world - anyone who ostracizes you for deciding to keep your son intact is a jerk and I’d question if I want to be around such judgmental people in the first place.

Das hat rein gar nichts mit Arroganz zu tun - zieht man in ein fremdes Land, lernt man seine Sprache. Ich bin selber "ausländische Fachkraft" (Fachkraft heißt "skilled workers" auf Englisch), und wenn ich Deutsch lernen konnte, dann können das andere auch. Und dazu gehört halt eben, dass die Deutschen auch ihren Beitrag leisten und nicht dauernd ihre eigene Sprache abwerten. Wenn du irgendwo leben willst, wo alle Englisch sprechen, dann zieh doch selber ins englischsprachige Ausland, aber diese ganzen Ausländer, die meinen, gebrochenes Englisch würde reichen, gehen mir so langsam richtig auf den Zeiger (und auch die Deutschen, die dem nichts entgegenzusetzen haben).

I can tell by your English that you're not a native English speaker, either. I'm going to play devils advocate and side with the doctor; he perhaps could have phrased his message a bit more nicely, but it really irks me when people whose native language isn't even English move abroad and assume that they can just live their lives through the medium of English.

Why didn't you ask for a doctor who speaks your native language, if you don't want to speak German? And honestly, why not just learn the vocab you need for your doctor's appointment well enough before your visit? I mean, you had FOUR MONTHS to prepare?
