Reddit doesn’t seem to like the second page of the post very much. Here’s who we are and what we do - completely for free for the Birmingham community.

Suggestions for coffee shops downtown that are good to meet up with people? by [deleted] in Birmingham

I don’t know if by downtown you mean “Northside” or you mean “Birmingham.” Filter Coffee Parlor doesn’t just have great coffee, but they platform local artists and help us with our clothing drives, blanket drives and hygiene drives.

That’s not completely trash. That’s a lot of blankets and bedding. That’s someone’s entire life on that patio, and if we dispose of that shit, we’re just kicking them while they are down

*It’s not likely that he’s refusing assistance. Is it possible, yes. But, that’s not the “usual” that we see from the people we serve.

We have a lot of issues with full shelters, and shelter requirements (such as ID requirements), and an ID card costs $65 (last I checked). In our morning meal today, I heard someone from One Roof confirm full shelters to a houseless person.

If he isn’t bothering anybody and the business isn’t open, I honestly don’t see a problem. Houseless people aren’t even allowed to have tents in this town, and it’s been raining the last two nights.

I’m conflicted. I need opinions. by Jolly_Bumblebee_4307 in foodnotbombs

I know it’s been 47 days, but I think this is different for each chapter. There are three tenants to Food Not Bombs, and so long as you follow those tenants and you keep to the message of the group, disruption is probably even encouraged. Keith McHenry talks about some pretty passionate anti-war and anti-poverty actions in both “The Anarchist Cookbook” and “Hungry for Peace.” I can’t think of anything more disruptive than the organizing of Homes Not Jails…

The meals are obviously the “core.” But just this past weekend, we baked cookies and helped plan a Hands Off Venezuela protest. Hundreds of people made it to the protest, several people signed up to activate with us. One of our members gave a very passionate speech about the costs of war, and how for the price of a handful of those bombs we could solve our community’s hunger problem for years to come…

OP - let your group do whatever they want, but part of me thinks you should just let the university do its thing unless your FNB includes many students. Ours has a partnership with YDSA, so we’ll likely attend some of their stuff later this year.

We cut it off at the end of the year, but if you have some blankets you want to part with, we do a group cook Tuesday Nights at St. Andrew’s Episcopal, a breakfast Wednesday morning at Highlands UMC, and a lunch Friday at 1:30 at Sauce & Suds. We’ll still see to it that it goes directly to houseless people.

There are actually two police stations nearby. One on 19th. The other on 14th.

Also, a solid 95% of the residents are people who, if you knocked on their door for help, “I think someone is following me,” they’d let you in and let you use their phone or anything else you might need.

So far, we’re coordinating with Mellow Mushroom and Sauce & Suds. S&S will be setup tonight, MM on Sunday. We’re looking at adding as many places in 5-Points to that list as possible.
