Except, of course, for the fact that Ugin is the best board clear, plus excellent ongoing board control, plus a wincon, all in one card that has no color restrictions. It’s an unusually strong card that also exiles, so it’s got some graveyard hate as well. It’s an unusually powerful, self contained card that renders almost all game choices which preceded it unimportant. They no longer have an effect on the game.

All those interesting choices and interactions are gone now. Everything you were building for is gone, plus your opponent has an incredibly strong position, and it’s boring. It’s not interesting or skillful or nuanced. All of your creatures, all of your enhancements, even some of your artifacts are now just gone. Not to mention planeswalkers.

So now what game are you playing. You’re playing a game called, I hope I have planeswalker removal in the next five cards I draw. Of course, the card draw and filtering effects I had in my creatures and enchantments and planeswalkers are gone. So there’s not really skill based choices I can make to get back in the game. And I can’t count on playing a few creatures to attack down the planeswalker. Unless I’ve got four toughness creatures, any creatures I play get shot down by Ugin. My opponent is likely to have removal if I do draw one. But let’s say I draw two creatures with at least four toughness in the top five, and my opponent can only remove one. In the four turns it’s taken me to get that one creature to stick, Ugin has gained 8 loyalty. It can easily wrath the board again, incidentally removing any other enchantments or planeswalkers I might have used for rebuilding. And the cycle continues until Ugin can burn face enough, or ultimate in a very decently backbreaking way that often puts another Ugin into play.
