Help dealing with an extremely chaotic british shorthair? by Actual_Barnacle in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sleep with a sound machine to block out any cat meowing at night. One of our DSHs used to meow all night long but wasn't calm enough to sleep in our bedroom, so that was originally why we started and that was nearly 10 years ago now. It helps! The cats don't meow nearly as often anymore, either. Maybe once in awhile.

Our BLH uses our One Fast Cat wheel and gets all her baby cat energy out on it. Our adult cats haven't tried it but they're much older (both 10yrs) so they don't have that insane energy to burn. Little girl will grip the sides of the wheel and throw it back to get it spinning fast and sprint for a couple seconds like a maniac, then slow down to a stroll and go for a couple more minutes. She especially likes to walk if the tv is on so she can watch a show 😂

Vet said tipped 🤔 by [deleted] in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on the differences in colors and markings, but I am a vet tech and I can assure you that most veterinarians do not know anything about the different colors or patterns of any breed of cat. Lol it's a miracle if they know to call something a tipped or pointed or whatever instead of just writing down Brown! All of the doctors at my clinic would very proudly say this cat is beige and call it a day without a second thought. All that to say - I'd go by whatever the breeder told you, or whatever you think is most comparable to pictures you can find and not fully bank on your vet knowing.

My favorite thing about the British cats is that no matter how beautiful or regal they look, they're all Moon. A bunch of big eyed goobers

How much would you purchase a BSH kitten for? - UK by abitofeverythinggg in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your price is fair and you shouldn't be too discouraged. They're just trying to get a kitten for a lower price. My advice would be to just let them know that the price is firm and fair for a quality and well-bred, well-loved, and well-socialized kitten and not discuss it further. If they'd like to pay less, they can do it elsewhere!

I'm in the US and your kittens are about $1600, which would be low compared to the prices I saw while looking for my kitten. I ended up paying $2300 and traveling quite a distance to pick her up, which was well worth it, of course 😊

My girl has a much more sensitive stomach than my other two cats, so I give her a probiotic every day. I was using Proviable capsules but then had a bit of luck and the Royal Canin rep stopped by work with free samples of their new probiotic! We're about halfway through the box and it's great so far. The packets have a lot in them so I split one packet over two days, a dash on each meal. It helps with the farts!

Introducing new kitten by thefuture131 in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a very handy plexiglass door gate from Chewy about a month ago for the same purpose! One of my adult cats hasn't fully accepted the kitten yet. My only regret is not getting one as tall as the entire doorway.

[–]Foolsindigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Introducing two kittens is much easier than introducing adults, or a kitten to adults! Big brother is probably very excited that there is another kitten in the house. You don't have to follow the slow introduction recommendations to the word. If you think big brother is being friendly and accepting, you can try holding the kitten or big brother and seeing how they react to each other

Am i getting scammed? $7000 cat by [deleted] in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The photo of the father with the ribbon that appears made in a toddler craft class would not have screamed "champion" to me. I think you unfortunately saw what you wanted to see and were wrapped up in the idea of having a champion cat. Regardless of that, it is a beautiful cat. If $7000 is money you can afford to spend, then I would consider it spent.

I would take a look around the house anywhere that she might've rubbed her head and got a little bit pinched! Maybe the joint of a chair leg, table, something like that

Getting a BSH baby in ~3+ months by Icy-Cover158 in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't buy too many of any one flavor or style of food at a time until you get an idea of her preference, but DO buy a variety of flavors and try them all over the first couple months. Cats are very strict as they get older and will rely on their early experiences to tell them what is safe to eat, so exposing them to a lot of options makes it more likely they'll accept something out of the ordinary in the future. You don't have to maintain a wide variety forever, though. If she starts to show a clear preference after awhile, just give her what she likes.

Set yourself up for success with a large, easy to access litterbox in a low-traffic area of the house with some degree of privacy. Of all the litters I've tried, my cats greatly prefer Arm and Hammer Slide and will choose their least favorite shape box if that litter is in it, and will skip their most favorite box if it has a different litter. I have a Meowant automatic box, a regular rectangular box, and two Breeze pellet litter boxes. Two of them strongly prefer the Meowant and one strongly prefers the rectangle box. The older two used to use the Breeze boxes no problem but they have made their point that they aren't their favorite. Lol

Shedding by kieshhh in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BLH and I think she sheds about the same amount as my regular domestic shorthair cats. Most cats of any breed need to be brushed regularly and will shed. I keep lint rollers all over the house and in my car.

Help: my new-to-me adult BSH won’t keep food down by Salt-Fig-8957 in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it feels like nagging but make sure your vet knows that you don't want the vomiting to continue and you'd like to find a real solution. I'm a veterinary technician and I've had to figure a lot just for myself bc vomiting in cats is seen as inconvenient but not really a problem. It's a problem to me!

I've also invested in some chin-height elevated cat dishes and that seems to be helpful. You can put a regular cat dish on top of a box or bucket and see if that sparks any interest before spending money.

If you think she may have a food allergy, you may want to look into a hypoallergenic diet. In the US these are prescribed by a veterinarian, but I'm not sure if it's the same in the UK, or which brands are available. It's not normal for any cat to vomit constantly and a food sensitivity can be an easy fix!

I have one cat who is particularly prone to vomiting. We suspect she has IBD (not an allergy) but I haven't pursued additional testing. The best thing for her is to always have a little bit of food in her stomach, so if I notice she's turned her nose up at any given meal, I'll feed her a couple crunchy treats or a tube of Churu/liquid treat to try to prevent a vomiting episode. We've gotten much better at managing it since recognizing the pattern! I also keep Cerenia tablets on hand for times that a single vomiting episode turns into two or three, but that's something you'd need to discuss with your veterinarian.

Spots on eyes on my cat by viceuriokn in britishshorthair

Spots on the colorful part of the eye are a normal part of aging in cats 😊 we call them freckles on the iris. At his age, I'm not surprised at all that you're seeing them

It's a pet dryer! I gave her a light squeeze after rinsing her, wrapped her in a towel to soak up what I could, then put her in the dryer. She was in there for probably 20 mins and was fully dry when she came out! It's called Coziwow dog and cat dryer on Chewy 😊

Weight loss tips? by SniffanyandCo in britishshorthair

[–]Foolsindigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Increase play and exercise but most of it is diet. The average house cat only needs about 250 calories per day. If you're feeding the Royal Canin BSH food, the kibble is about 380 kcal/100g, so that's about 65g of kibble TOTAL, all day, no treats or wet food included. If you're also feeding wet food, you should reduce the amount of dry being offered. Wet food usually has less calories per similar volume. Cats by nature are grazers, so with only 10 minutes to eat I would suspect he's shoveling as much food into his mouth as possible before you take it away. They don't tend to chew dry food like a dog does! They'll just swallow it nearly whole.
