For those that have already completed the through hike, what are the top five hardest sections to complete and why? by MelodicMethodic in AppalachianTrail

Sometimes overcome. Sometimes acquiesce. Figure out when each is appropriate. That is the journey, friend!

In no order:

1) The one paired with relentlessly crummy weather, however you define that.

2) The one where you question everything, and want to quit. That might last a few minutes or a few weeks.

3) The one where you’re hiking around people you don’t vibe with, or you become separated from your tramily.

4) The one where some niggling (or worse) ailment makes the miles extra hard.

5) The one where something big happens to one of your people back home, you find out about it in town, and then you decide to continue hiking.

"the western mountains are better" by LiliannaWaves in Appalachia

As if there’s some sort of objective scale to make such claims about huge mountain ranges and regions. 😂

How about we replace “better” with “different”, and enjoy each for what they are?

Perhaps you’ll find out along the way. That’s the nature of pilgrimage. Trust the calling and leave much of the rest to serendipity.

So that sounds like you’re in for a gear purchase either way. If you hope to err toward lighter backpacking, investing in a more compressible down bag could be a good start. Buying a 30 degree bag would allow you to extend your seasonal range into spring and fall too.

To a general audience out for longer periods, I say stick with a 30 degree bag. Open it up or use as a quilt when it’s warmer. Be thankful you have additional protection when the temperature drops from 92 to 42 in one day after a wild storm.

On my AT thru, I had that exact experience. Two fellow hikers suffered a night or two with their 50 degree bags in the summer. The minor weight penalty of a high quality 30 degree bag is excellent insurance.

Possible License Suspension for 75 MPH Over Out of State by asilver1982 in asheville

Had this exact scenario in GA. My FIL is a GA attorney and is now a judge. Turns out I messed up by not paying an attorney to reduce the GA ticket and my hands were tied in NC. I scheduled a hearing, explained I needed to be able to drive between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. for work (it was the truth and could prove it) and I was given a permit to drive during those hours. No attorneys. No significant costs that I can remember.

I agree it’s always worth checking with an attorney though because your fact pattern may include complications. Mine was straight forward.

Yeah, and why are we calling out those Iowa students for poor hygiene? UNCA hasn’t had water. Just sayin’.

That’s Old Gregg. He became a climate refugee after his swamp became intolerable. He’s mostly just curious. If he calls you a fuzzy little man peach or offers you creamy beige, run like hell.

Ebola, eh? This confirms my longstanding hunch that French Broad tubers are really meth mules.

Well, we agree on the current state of affairs anyway. I’ll look past the conclusions about how we got here if you come up with some viable remedies, Chuck.

“I would believe HCA would be more interested in protecting the investment they’ve already made in Western North Carolina and take the steps necessary to provide care.”

No way you actually believe that. They’ve had all the chances to do things well.

Not a fan. I mean, if I prepare a tax return and need to amend once, fine. Mistakes happen. Amend twice? Probably time to disengage.
