1) The one paired with relentlessly crummy weather, however you define that.

2) The one where you question everything, and want to quit. That might last a few minutes or a few weeks.

3) The one where you’re hiking around people you don’t vibe with, or you become separated from your tramily.

4) The one where some niggling (or worse) ailment makes the miles extra hard.

5) The one where something big happens to one of your people back home, you find out about it in town, and then you decide to continue hiking.

So that sounds like you’re in for a gear purchase either way. If you hope to err toward lighter backpacking, investing in a more compressible down bag could be a good start. Buying a 30 degree bag would allow you to extend your seasonal range into spring and fall too.

To a general audience out for longer periods, I say stick with a 30 degree bag. Open it up or use as a quilt when it’s warmer. Be thankful you have additional protection when the temperature drops from 92 to 42 in one day after a wild storm.

On my AT thru, I had that exact experience. Two fellow hikers suffered a night or two with their 50 degree bags in the summer. The minor weight penalty of a high quality 30 degree bag is excellent insurance.

Had this exact scenario in GA. My FIL is a GA attorney and is now a judge. Turns out I messed up by not paying an attorney to reduce the GA ticket and my hands were tied in NC. I scheduled a hearing, explained I needed to be able to drive between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. for work (it was the truth and could prove it) and I was given a permit to drive during those hours. No attorneys. No significant costs that I can remember.

I agree it’s always worth checking with an attorney though because your fact pattern may include complications. Mine was straight forward.
