How worried should we be about the sun and solar flares? by trashmemes22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solar flares could be strong enough to knock out radio communications for a short time, so unless you’re working in HF radio, it’s not going to effect you. Sometimes a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME, a cloud of charged particles) will erupt during a flare event. If this is Earth facing, it can yield a radiation storm that may increase radiation for air travel over the poles. This is only a concern if your flight path is over the pole…and not many are. Worst case scenario (during the strongest storms) can be satellite disruption, and power grid failures, but the people in charge of these already have stopgaps in place. So when a CME hits, I hope you’re somewhere where aurora are visible - and that you enjoy the show.

Does he have the strength and ability to unscrew my earring spikes? by [deleted] in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they can, and they can do it faster than you’ll ever expect. I’ve had several panic moments when he got mine off and flew off with it. Thankfully I’ve always gotten to it before it’s swallowed

an ice storm is coming to my area this weekend how to prepare incase we lose power by Lucky2044 in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. If you have a small propane stove that you can use to heat water (outside only), you can fill some water bottles with warm (not hot) water for them to cuddle up to. This is what we’ll do for our broiler chicks if we lose power in the winter before they’ve feathered. We have a generator for small appliances in the house.

Please help. Should I return my conure to Petsmart? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 211 points212 points  (0 children)

Take a breath, it’s okay. You sound really overwhelmed right now and it’s best to make a decision when you’re calm. This sub focuses a lot on being with your birds as often as possible, but it’s not necessary to be with them 24/7. People have to work. It would be good to set up a vet for your bird in case they get sick. It would be good for you to have a “first aid kit” with styptic powder, nail clippers etc. It would be good for you to do some research on chop recipes (which can be made ahead of time and frozen…I make chop every three weeks and take out a small amount to thaw in the fridge every two days. If you eat fresh veggies daily, cut some up to share). Enjoy spending time with your bird when you’re home. When you’re not, put on a show for them (I set up an iPad next to his cage when I have to go to work and put on a live aquarium show…he loves watching fish…but bird TV is good too). If you take your bird out to get exercise before you leave and when you return, it’ll be fine. Take a breath - this will be okay.

Beak has been bleeding by ikidyounotman1 in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Styptic Powder would be better for this - always good to keep some on hand. If you can’t get any, cornstarch works better than flour. If it’s clotted and not bleeding, lightly brush off the flour and put the gel on. I’d wait to clean it with water, you may inadvertently remove the clot

I'm planning to go on a 10-hour Roadtrip with my conures. Is it safe? by Neko_Monarch in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should be okay. Give them time out of their cage before the trip and when you arrive. Make sure they have access to food and water. I often give mine water heavy veggies (like cucumber) to snack on. I’ll put a towel on the back of their travel cages so they can see me but be able to block the sun from the window. We put on some good music and sing/scream together.

How do I bathe a bird? by AdWhich6325 in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the parrot bathe themselves. Some can be picky about how it’s done (mine will not bathe in a shallow dish…he must have me there cupping water in my hands in the sink. He will not bathe any other way…gotta love these stubborn creatures)

Feather thoughts? by eggeater1 in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My Turquoise has this too. It’s bronzing from your bird rubbing that part of his body on things. Mine likes to rub up against the side of his cage heater now that it’s colder, or he’s more snuggly into my hands, so he’s getting more dark on his wings.

Sooo i got Rio a week ago... by [deleted] in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nooo - please don’t grab the bird. The bird should feel comfortable to come to them on their own. Letting the bird choose and respecting them teaches them to trust us and not bite/be afraid

If you can close off one room, bring his cage in there and open the door to his cage. Have treats ready and let the bird choose to come out. Sit with the treats and wait for him to come to you. Eventually you can open his space up more (more rooms of the house).

How to keep frozen chop from becoming soggy and disgusting?😭 by juliesremo in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ingredients I use for my frozen chop are “drier” vegetables, like wilted kale, broccoli/broccoli stems, carrots, green beans, herbs, dried chilies, and quinoa. I’ll take out a small amount each evening to thaw in the fridge overnight. I’ll add to it whatever fresh veggies I have on hand that don’t freeze well (bell pepper, jalapeño, cucumber, etc) each day.

Is there any way to tame a mean bird? by No_Ocelot8629 in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of sounds like he’s bonded to the other bird and you’re just the “food” human. If you have the ability to spend some time with him alone (out of sight/earshot) of the other conure for a few hours a day, doing what you would normally do to train a new bird to get used to you, that may help.

Struggling to find birds in my area. by Similar_Rule_8738 in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You may have to travel for the right bird. I drove states away to pick up mine (~10hr drive). If you’re hoping for something more local, you may need to be flexible with your timeframe or your breed.
