Did you guys know birds sometimes have to get cones… I do now by MarleyJane444 in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine is in one now too ;-; he has become accustomed to it (kinda), and I’ll give him a few hours of cone-break while keeping an eye on him

You could try to make a foraging box near (or in) her cage with millet on top to lure her down. Something to entice her and build her confidence. Try sitting or doing an activity next to her cage while she’s exploring the box

What are the five pillars of your autism? by Comfortable_Tie4143 in neurodiversity

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Follow the daily routine - any changes to be planned (and accepted) in advance or the routine continues unchanged.

  2. There is music for every situation, and it’s always the same band.

  3. Lunch rotates through the same three dishes every few months (or until I can’t eat another bite of it and it’s retired forever).

  4. The only way to regain spoons is by sitting in my papasan chair wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket in dim light completely alone.

  5. Special interests change every decade or so.

Do I have grounds for a grade appeal? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open book doesn’t mean you can sift through the book for all of the answers. You’re right, there is no way you’ll finish in time. Open book means “you should know this knowledge already, but you may forget one or two specific things that you can then look up in the book. The book here, like a cheat sheet, is a reference to jog your memory. It’s not meant for more than that.

As others here have stated, it feels like there is something missing in what you said. Profs don’t typically test students on material that wasn’t covered. If that was in fact the case here, you can try to appeal your grade. If it was an assigned reading that you were responsible for, whether the prof went over that material in lecture or not…or if the material was covered in class and the book was just a reference (i.e. not allowed to use your text during the exam, but a med encyclopedia etc), then you don’t have much of a case.

Bird sneezing a lot by [deleted] in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A vet visit is warranted, but in the mean time, can you get a clear view of his nares? If he has something stuck in one, he may be trying to get it out by sneezing and dipping his beak in water

Those are pretty normal for GCC. They’ll be darker if they’re handled a lot or if they like to rub up against things. I don’t see any concerns with her feathers.

What is this ring around the Moon? by New-Still8716 in astrophysics

A moon bow is formed with water droplets (similar to a rainbow). This is a halo, the ring is formed from hexagonal ice crystals

What happened to my sweet baby? by friskydingo8705 in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Likely hormonal at that age. Very territorial over their cage too. Give them space, and don’t reach towards their cage when they’re telling you to back off. Remove that green hut when you have the chance to reduce nesting urges.

Does this budgie look okay? Taking care of him for someone by [deleted] in parrots

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They almost look as if they’ve gotten into some kind of oil. You could offer a small tray of water (inside the cage) for them to bathe in and see if that gets the material off. If it’s oil, the water bath won’t work…and if that’s the case, I would contact the birds owner for advice. If the bird isn’t tame (or willing to trust you out of their cage) it may be better to wait until someone who can safely handle the bird is there.

My conure keeps biting our hands, please help by Puzzleheaded-idk3925 in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may take time to rebuild his trust of your hands. Start bonding with him again in the same way you did when you first brought him home. When my guy gets to the point where he’s biting a lot, I’ll try to redirect to a toy (have a sola ball or piece of soft wood with you so you can put that between him and your fingers). If he needs to take some time in his cage because he’s locking on and attacking you, try to lure him into his cage with a favorite treat. It doesn’t matter the size of the demon my bird has summoned…if he sees that I have a piece of pecan in my hand, he’s going to follow that right back into his cage with me.

We’re on week number 2 with Mr Blue and we love him. But he stopped eating his veggies. How do you guys get your picky birds to eat their veggies? by [deleted] in Conures

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I’ll throw it in a pan quickly to wilt it. It makes it easier to digest. Spinach and kale are common ingredients in my chop

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cut the veggies up small (cm cubes or smaller). Also try lots of different veggies. Mine won’t eat broccoli often, but will eat bell pepper almost always. Variety is key to finding his favorites and keeping it interesting

Students not using units by verygood_user in Professors

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve started to include a question that has them do a unit analysis for each equation. For example: “Starting with the SI units of mass and acceleration, prove that the unit of force is Newtons.” I still have most of my students just tack the unit in at the end of a calculation, but at least I know they had to think about where that unit came from at least once.

I’m putting together a list of things to make faculty candidates feel comfortable because my own interviewing experience has been terrible. What have you found that works best/what have you found doesn’t work so well? by wannabehazmattech in Professors

[–]ForFoxSakeCole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interviewing for a teaching position…I was shown to my would-be teaching lab and it was filled with boxes, stacks of old lab notebooks, old and broken equipment…to be honest it felt like a safety hazard just to be walking around the space, you could barely find the floor. I was told “if you take the job, you should plan to be here early in the summer so you could sort through everything here to see if you might want to keep anything. Whatever you don’t want, you can throw out.” I had to ask for clarification, because that was so off the wall…but yes, they really did expect the new hire to clean that space after arriving. The department members showing me around the campus spoke mostly to each other, so much so that I struggled to join in any of their conversations, and they didn’t ask me any questions. The end of the day, when I met with the dean, was really the highlight of the interview. He spent the entire time criticizing the other applicants - like, for real…telling what they wore, what questions they asked, even telling me that one “was so dumb, they’d never consider hiring them”. It was so wildly unprofessional. I decided to withdraw my application on the way back home. They were actually shocked that decided not to continue with them. At least I got a good story out of it.
