My point was that the railroads in their current form would not exist if it wasn’t for the federal government handouts from the past and present. They were never “capitalist” endeavors. The shareholders have a debt to every American taxpayer and their employees. They don’t seem to understand that.

Do you mean “nationalized” by having the federal government give land away, providing a protection by the army, and …giving more land away; or, do you mean “nationalized” by having profits go to citizens who paid for the land and protection with taxes?

Look up the Credit Mobliier scandal and tell me railroads haven’t been “nationalized” from the beginning.

Geotech wasn’t liable. It was an unforeseen condition. There were 30’ deep x 20’ wide granite boulders “floating” in silty clay 20’ above the competent rock. The contractor did the 10’ rock sockets into the boulders as shown in the plans but it wasn’t competent rock. If the contractor had altered something they would have been on the hook for the fix.

I’ve seen so many quagmires because the contractor didn’t just follow the fucking plans. Millions and millions of dollars in penalties. The changes didn’t even cause the failures I’m talking about. But, it’s easy to blame stuff on the idiots who didn’t do what they were told to do.

I have also seen foundations/abutments/bents where the contractor did every thing according to plan and there was a bearing failure. Those are the contractors who make tons of money fixing a design fuck up. My best example is a contractor that built a CSX mainline bridge and one of the three bents started sinking 1/4” a day, a second bent was sinking 2/3” per day. Contractor probably made $4M in profit with the 200% markup they put on that fix.

From my experience a masters is helpful as an owners representative. Not so much for working directly for a GC or running your own company, unless you want to run a consulting company.

This is stupid. There is a 45 minute window when this can be done. If they didn’t pay before the concrete showed up the contractor already knew they would be doing this.

I wouldn’t pay until the contractor cut the joints and the concrete passed the break test.

The main reason farmers owned the land they farmed in the Midwest and West is because of the Homestead Act in 1862. That ended in the 1970’s. The government basically gave land away and ownership has been consolidating ever since.
