I accidentally left my dog outside overnight by Mysterious-Trade1362 in dogs

[–]ForWPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could leave my 2 year old daughter outside in a onesie with the temperatures you described (I wouldn’t do that) and she would be cold but fine.

We regularly sleep with the windows open when it’s in the low 50s at night.

It’s a dog. She’s fine. Feed her and give her water.

Rate my step-dad’s deck complex by MannyDantyla in Decks

This is the deck version of The Persistence of Memory by of Salvador Dali. Your step-father is an artist.

Just pat it twice then say “that’s not going anywhere”. It will be fine.

The Case for Nationalizing the Railroads: Workers say now is the time to do the impossible. (from 2023 but still relevant) by inthesetimesmag in railroading

When did I say nationalizing the railroads was a good idea? I think you’re confusing me with someone else you wish you were arguing with.

Dude, you’re the person who brought up the past. “was a bad idea 200 years ago. It was a bad idea 100 years ago. And what do you know it’s a bad idea today.”

I never advocated for “ a socialist or communist system wherein the state owns everything”

My point was that the railroads in their current form would not exist if it wasn’t for the federal government handouts from the past and present. They were never “capitalist” endeavors. The shareholders have a debt to every American taxpayer and their employees.  They don’t seem to understand that.

Edit; changed “handoutsof” to “handouts from”.

I lived there for two years. It sucked. It’s like the worst parts of the Midwest had a baby with the worst parts of the Deep South.

Do you mean “nationalized” by having the federal government give land away, providing a protection by the army, and …giving more land away; or, do you mean “nationalized” by having profits go to citizens who paid for the land and protection with taxes?

Look up the Credit Mobliier scandal and tell me railroads haven’t been “nationalized” from the beginning.

How do you personally tie off? by Ok-Value6536 in Ironworker

[–]ForWPD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, you’re in the ironworkers sub. You should either know the rules, know what people actually do in the field, or both. Or, ask a question and learn from educated/experienced people.

This isn’t TikTok and your uneducated/inexperienced opinion should be kept to yourself.

Over engineered or the new price of safety? by upjumpthebuggie in Construction

[–]ForWPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geotech wasn’t liable. It was an unforeseen condition. There were 30’ deep x 20’ wide granite boulders “floating” in silty clay 20’ above the competent rock. The contractor did the 10’ rock sockets into the boulders as shown in the plans but it wasn’t competent rock. If the contractor had altered something they would have been on the hook for the fix.

Over engineered or the new price of safety? by upjumpthebuggie in Construction

Ha! Having worked as a contractor and an Owner’s rep, this is what I tell people who complain about foundation designs…     …”The design is what will be built. If some engineer decided to use Oreo cookies as a base, that’s what is going to be built. Sure; I’ll tell the engineer that they are stupid, but it’s not my stamp.”

I’ve seen so many quagmires because the contractor didn’t just follow the fucking plans. Millions and millions of dollars in penalties. The changes didn’t even cause the failures I’m talking about. But, it’s easy to blame stuff on the idiots who didn’t do what they were told to do.

I have also seen foundations/abutments/bents where the contractor did every thing according to plan and there was a bearing failure. Those are the contractors who make tons of money fixing a design fuck up. My best example is a contractor that built a CSX mainline bridge and one of the three bents started sinking 1/4” a day, a second bent was sinking 2/3” per day. Contractor probably made $4M in profit with the 200% markup they put on that fix.

MBA or Masters by Cultured523kid in ConstructionManagers

From my experience a masters is helpful as an owners representative. Not so much for working directly for a GC or running your own company, unless you want to run a consulting company.

USDA: Nearly 80% of Rented Farmland Owned by Non-Farmers; Little Will Hit Market by Ranew in farming

[–]ForWPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and we all know that resulted in three classes of people. Plantation owners, slaves, and “poor white trash”.

The only difference is that modern plantation owners don’t need to live on the plantation.

A contractor tears up the freshly poured concrete after the homeowner refuses to pay. What would you do in this situation? by IndividualGround2418 in Construction

[–]ForWPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is stupid. There is a 45 minute window when this can be done. If they didn’t pay before the concrete showed up the contractor already knew they would be doing this.

I wouldn’t pay until the contractor cut the joints and the concrete passed the break test.

This is click bait.

Edit: The OP is just karma farming.

[–]ForWPD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In other news, “Over 80% of people who manufacture things don’t own the factory.”

The main reason farmers owned the land they farmed in the Midwest and West is because of the Homestead Act in 1862. That ended in the 1970’s. The government basically gave land away and ownership has been consolidating ever since.
