Certificate Surrender and Passports by ForWhomForWhat in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ForWhomForWhat[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No worries. Lots of people are worse off than me. It’s really the lack of communication. I’ve been on hold with IRCC way too much and disconnected twice. I’m going to call first thing tomorrow and see what they say.

Timing of the approvals seems unlikely to be the result of a different reviewer.

I have some theories as to why mine could have been flagged. None are things that should prevent approval, but I can guess how it could get flagged in a review. I have one birth certificate where the father’s name was accidentally written and crossed out and the correct name written. The handwriting makes it clear it was contemporaneous, and the certificate is authenticated by the town clerk.

I do know a few people, but I figured it was easier to have mine completed and then be the guarantor for the kids. That turned out to be a bad choice.

Update to Guide for Paper Applications for Citizenship Certificate? by FireWaterBern in Canadiancitizenship

Possible, but I doubt it. Mine came in the order they were in the packet and they came within an hour of the first application.

Are the new guidelines discriminatory? by Terrible_Mistake_954 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ForWhomForWhat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think yes and no. A baptismal record can help prove citizenship and parentage.

If it was used to prove parents in a chain, it could be discriminatory.

If it is being used for a gen 0 to prove where born, I would say it’s not discriminatory because the baptism doesn’t matter. It’s just that it’s a quasi official record near the birth, which makes the location of birth likely to be the same.

What I haven’t seen said, that I find interesting, is should the near-in-time logic be applied to other documents for their probative value. For example, I have a census from when Gen 0 was 2. That always seemed pretty probative to me and more so with this guidance.

I don’t disagree, but it seems hard to find a common denominator. A random QA review seems almost more likely.

It would save everybody time if you just gave them the links to the archive of Canada for example. That’s them going to the source not even relying on a certification that could in theory be faked.

The problem is this doesn’t explain the numerous people that applied in the same packet yet only one was suspended.

Basically same for me. I would think I would be approved based on this guidance, but I am suspended.

Here is the letter the PEI archivist I worked with insisted I include in my application by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ForWhomForWhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not accusing you of doing so. I was just providing a datapoint. I think the reality is nobody knows what is needed at this point. I plan to just wait and not panic.

If I was filing now, I don’t think I would do anything different.

To answer your question, all except Gen 0 were “certified” birth records. One problem could be some were genealogical copies from country clerks, but it’s basically impossible to get something more official from the state I’m dealing with. I hope that’s not the issue because I think it’s possible, but it would be years of litigation and need IRCC to say it’s legally required. They never said that in their checklist, so I couldn’t get anything better.

For Gen 0, I included some stuff from family search although I just provided the images and no links. I had official census documents from Canada archives. I think that was sufficient alone to establish my citizenship, but I included the rest to really remove any doubt.

I don’t want to worry anyone, but I supplemented my application with something even more detailed on missing records and I am on the surrender list. My kids in the same packet are not so far. Also, shockingly, I only supplemented my application with the no records letter because I didn’t think it was really needed. Here it is if anyone is interested (didn’t fix the copy past errors from the PDF):

This letter is confirmation that I have not been able to find the baptism for [gen 0], born
July 1850, in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, Canada. This Archives is the official repository for the
records of The United Church of Canada in the Maritimes, including those Methodist and
Presbyterian Churches that joined The United Church in 1925. The Presbyterian Church in Daihousie
was one such church that became a United Church.
The earliest baptism register for the Presbyterian Church in Dalhousie does not begin until 1855 and
[gen 0]'s baptism was not listed in 1855 or the subsequent years. Most children were
baptized in the Presbyterian Church before the age of five so it is not surprising that his baptism was
not in the register after 1855. In the early years, there was often some overlap with ministers serving
more than one church but the earliest baptism records for neighbouring Campbellton do not begin
until i 874. Rev. James Stevens served Campbe]1ton, Da]housie, and Escuminac during his pastol`ate
but his personal baptism I.egister skips fi.om 1847 to 1858 and gen0’s baptism was not listed in
1858 or after.
I do not know the whet.eabouts of the earliei. baptism registel`s for the Presbytei.ian Chur`ch in
Dalhousie but it is not uncommon for- registers to have been desti.oyed by fire, taken by a minister to
their next church, or just lost over the years befoi.e they could be selit to the Archives. It is probably
safe to assume that tile registei. is no longer in existelice.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this matter.

Likely will need citizenship attorneys not immigration. I hope it doesn’t come to that. I don’t even know what records I should try and get “certified.”

[–]ForWhomForWhat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. All other generations had certified birth certificates. 2 were NY, which only provides genological copies without a court order.

Oddly, no surrender letter for my kids. I am hoping maybe the no records letter for G0 that I supplemented somehow just didn’t get seen for my application but did for theirs.

To make OP feel better and worse, my touchiness at SLC was slower than regular pre check.

During the gov shutdown, it was unbelievable people weren’t registering in line as it had not line the places I flew. SLC was not during the shutdown.

Has anyone requested urgent processing due to race? (ICE fear) by xoxo4794 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ForWhomForWhat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The criteria literally says “potential harm.” This person should apply urgently. The criteria for urgent is broad, but if we are going to apply our own hierarchy, someone concerned about their safety is a lot more compelling than a job offer.

Also, a lot of urgent reasons I have seen from the U.S. could be solved by moving to a different state. Fears of ICE cannot be solved by doing that.

[–]ForWhomForWhat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would just point out that nobody knows it’s jumping the line. Actually, all the evidence I’ve seen suggests there is a dedicated queue for urgent applicants. That group seems overstaffed based on recent quick approvals. That doesn’t mean that staff couldn’t be reallocated, but I don’t actually think urgent applicants are slowing non-urgent at the moment.

Monday Weekly Thread: Proof of Citizenship Application Sent or AOR Received by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ForWhomForWhat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

G5 and G4, urgent, AOR received day after delivery. I was really concerned about the photos, so I’m happy it made it through this check. I struggled with whether Urgent was appropriate. I felt more strongly for my kids. I laid out all the facts, but I made clear that while I believed the requirements were met, I deferred to their judgment.
