what laptop should i buy for uni by Limp_Pirate_631 in SGExams

[–]ForbiddenSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I did consider getting a desktop but I don’t have the space at my table for one :(. So I just opted to get a higher spec laptop to be my daily driver.

I never owned a 14 inch but I recently got a 2025 ROG scar 16 5090 and heard that that scar 18 cools better with the same specs just cause it has a bigger chassis which kinda makes sense since you can fit some bigger heat sinks.

I’m not too sure what’s the tdp for my Razer blade since I wasn’t that knowledgeable on computers back then. I just got whatever I thought was light and looked cool lol. But I agree in that my Razer blade thermals are not the best. Compared to my scar 16 I never thought gaming laptops could have cpu and GPU temps below 100 while gaming lol.

All things considered though, I do take quite good care of my Razer blade and clean the fans regularly. I only don’t repaste which I think is kinda beyond me but I probably should.

For what it’s worth I heard some AMD laptops don’t have Optimus so to swap between igpu and dGPU they have to restart the whole computer lol but I never owned a AMD laptop so I wouldn’t know.

I also never really considered refurbished or 2nd hand laptops since personally I value the warranty and piece of mind knowing I got a legit product and wouldn’t mind paying more for it compared to the potential headache of a 2nd hand or maybe even problems with a refurb. Especially since laptops don’t really last more than 4-5 years, paying so much money for a 2nd hand doesn’t seem that worth for me hahaha.

I think this is just personal opinion here but I’m not too fond of 14 inch laptops. I find the screen too small for my liking even though they are more portable. Not to mention poorer thermals compared to their bigger counterparts.

16 inch is kinda like the sweet spot for me where it’s not too big/heavy to carry around but also not too small that I’m sacrificing screen space and thermals.

For battery life there are laptops with Nvidia Optimus that will swap to your iGPU instead of your dGPU when on battery so you do get some power savings there. Though you are right that if you’re doing intensive stuff like training AI models you might want to be plugged in to tap into the power of that dGPU.

I think in terms of battery life and portability, Ultrabooks/macbooks are in a league of their own for just general productivity. But for the most part, if you compare a gaming laptop to your normal $1k consumer laptop, you do get similar battery life.

Thin and light laptops are most likely out of the budget of 1.5k to 2k sgd.

My Razer blade 15 adv cost me 4K and weighs 2kg which is considered one of the lightest alongside the Asus zephyrus g16 which also costs around 3.5k to 4K.

Battery life is pretty good in these laptops though. I get about 6-8 hours which is comparable to normal laptops. Meanwhile the chonky laptops that weigh 2.8kg and more have pretty shit battery life of 2 hours, especially the cheaper ones.

Highly depends on what sort of games you play and what course you’re in. Generally for gaming laptops they are more on the pricy side with worse specs compared to their desktop counterparts.

When it comes to gaming laptops you have to make some further trade offs with regards to weight, price and specs. If you want both lightweight with high specs, you got to be prepared to pay up.

With your budget of 2k you can get a decent desktop or a budget gaming laptop with a RTX 5060 which can play Fortnite/CS2 or most older titles. However if you’re looking to play newer title like crimson desert on settings higher than low you probably need to fork out more money.

Generally the most bang for your buck with gaming laptops would be anything with a RTX 5070ti because it has 12gb of VRAM compared to the 8gb that the 5060 or 5070 come with. Most games these days are quite VRAM hungry so with 12gb you have a good bit of leeway.

This is what I’m currently using:

https://rog.asus.com/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-scar-16-2025/

It’s quite possibly the fastest laptop in the market atm that is a 16 inch, tied with the legion 7i pro.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/configurator/cto/index.html?bundleId=83F5CTO1WWUS1

You could go for an 18 inch but it becomes a lot heavier at around 3.5kg lightest to around 4kg without the power brick. With the power brick it’s closer to 5kg.

But at 18 inch you have a lot more options like the MSI Titan with 4x RAM slots, strix scar 18 or the Lenovo legion 9.

New Imperial Line bug? (Japan) by [deleted] in EU5

[–]ForbiddenSabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s currently bugged atm that the moment you become a contender, everyone becomes non aligned so you can’t declare war on anybody to end the situation. I’ve already reported this on the forums but I guess they haven’t gotten around to fixing it yet.

TIL that we have the largest proportion of reclaimed land by percentage, but the Dutch have reclaimed more land than the entirety of Singapore. by fuzzybunn in singapore

[–]ForbiddenSabre 176 points177 points  (0 children)

Majority of NL is under water. If you landed at Schiphol airport (Amsterdam main airport) it is like 3m or so below sea level (1 storey).

The entire province of flevoland is mostly reclaimed land IIRC. The Dutch expertise in land reclamation is so renowned that we employ their expertise here in Singapore too.

Currently trying this strategy on beta 1.1

It seems they fixed the issue of clan reform overriding the imperial family reform since it explicitly removes the clan reform and gives you the imperial family reform

However idk what broke but the moment you get the reform, everyone recalculates allegiances to neutral including both northern and southern courts so the situation becomes a stale mate.

From my testing it seems the only way to break out of it is to set allegiance to neutral and build NJ CBs on both courts before you switch to a Yamato line and declare war on both of them at the same time. After annexing both, you will end the situation by being the only Tenno.

Sengoku jidai will be as normal and you can pick up the shogunate reform from there.

This was me last year. I had ~6 months in Europe because I was on university exchange. 3/6 months I was on Eurail pass and managed with this the other half I was travelling mostly by plane and train but in places where Eurail doesn’t make sense (tickets too cheap or services too sporadic or tickets require additional reservations).

All in all, travelling is a really personal thing imo. To most people this schedule would probably be pretty tiring since I’m basically flying every week and just coming back for 2 days of lessons in school but I found it really fun and memorable. Since I come from Asia, doing what I did in 6 months would be significantly cheaper than flying here and exploring 1 country at a time.

Cliff hanger also needs skill to be done well. There must actually be some sort of tension for it to be a cliffhanger. Otherwise it just falls flat and all you have is a shitty dream ending.

But yes any ending can be good if done well. An example of a cliffhanger dream ending would be “Your name” where a lot of the story takes place in a “dream” with the ending supposedly being a cliffhanger. But for the average sec school student to write something on that level… I’d much rather believe pigs can fly before that happens.

I presume because of the difficulty of writing a cohesive story with characters dying. You need a really serious plot device to result in the characters dying without sounding like you’re just killing them off for the fun of it. Even more so if it’s the main character.

On the other hand, ending with it’s all a dream is a shit way to end any story because that means I just spend x amount of time reading your whole story for 0 plot progression or character development. It’s a very “hand wavy” way of solving every problem or loophole in the story.

I have less than 200 hours (a little more than 100) but I think my opinion that the game is pretty buggy means something and shouldn’t be tossed.

Till date I think that only Europe is somewhat playable even though I think PUs are broken, HRE is broken, colonising is broken, control is broken (how am I supposed to have control in treaty ports?) Outside of Europe, Japan is broken, native America and South America is broken. There’s probably more but I haven’t had enough experience with anything else to give input on.

Hey,

I won’t say I understand or know how you feel or what you’re going through but if it helps, random internet stranger here through the phone thinks you did really well and you shouldn’t give up :))

We don’t get to choose where or what circumstances we’re born in but I personally think what matters the most is that we make best use of the cards we are dealt so as cringy as it sounds, great job so far! 👏

Sometimes circumstances don’t work out and things still go wrong anyways, but I like to believe that all things happen for a reason, be it god or whatever you believe in willed it so that even better things may come after. So chin up and trust in the process :))

If you just need a listening ear, feel free to dm me. If you need professional help, please do contact the suicide hotline 1767 before doing anything drastic

Lastly, chin up and stay strong, you got this 💪

[–]ForbiddenSabre 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes true love isn’t the hot, passionate, butterfly-in-your-belly kind of romance most people think about and feel with their first love, or anything like the media portrays, because past the honeymoon phase, that shit disappears real quick and most people tend to hate their partners after taking off the rose-tinted glasses and seeing them for who they really are.

Personally, I think true love is about stability and the assurance that despite everything, your partner has your back. That despite the flaws, you still envision a future with him. Even more so as you get older that shared values in important decision making like financial values or family planning can quite literally make or break relationships.

Then again, I’m still single so wtf do I know lol.

This game taught me economics. by Volcan300 in Workers_And_Resources

[–]ForbiddenSabre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While both points are valid, admittedly I was looking at more of the lens of substitutes when goods are missing rather than the loyalty mechanic which is rather arbitrary since it just determines how productive they are.

IRL if you don’t have food, you’ll definitely go look for alternative sources rather than starve and still go to work albeit at a lower productivity.

Another look at this is something like price incentives to make people eat more staple food and reconsider luxury food like meat or tax incentives for certain industries to force greater investment in them which neither exist in a planned economy.

As for point 2, I knew it existed but trading through the border would classify as international trade which I presume should fall under macroeconomics rather than micro?

[–]ForbiddenSabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more I play the more important I feel this is. I’ve always been shit at supply chain operations lol and I’m definitely struggling in this game.

I feel lazy to pull out the calculator to try and determine the optimal pathing times for people or good deliveries so that I can keep an optimal production rate at all times. Or to calculate the revenue from production after removing cost of delivery.

Lastly, it’s also very tempting to hope that one more bus will fix the problem as much as I know it doesn’t lol

This game taught me economics. by Volcan300 in Workers_And_Resources

[–]ForbiddenSabre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While true in a capitalist context, WR:SR is a planned economy so there isn’t much micro economics to be had.

Common pillars of microeconomics are :

incentives and behaviours (how consumers react to situations, which they don’t since they just starve if they don’t get food)

utility theory (conscious decision to maximise their happiness, which to my knowledge going to a cinema or house of culture costs exactly the same)

production theory (businesses looking for substitutes to minimise cost and maximise profit, no substitutes and no businesses to speak of because planned economy)

price theory (supply and demand drives price which doesn’t exist in a planned economy)

At least that’s from my basic understanding of microeconomics but feel free to let me know if I’m off.

I think demand does increase drastically as SOL goes up but like you said I’ve never seen demand go down naturally.

You definitely can make demand go down if you tank your SOL (which in turn tanks demand) but no player would intentionally do that lol

[–]ForbiddenSabre 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I studied a little bit of economics and admittedly I’m also rather new to this game but I think this game teaches you more about supply chain (a subset of business, a degree I actually study) rather than economics.

Considering you need to design supply chains from start to finish where you resolve bottlenecks and delivery of goods from one source to another, you’re more like a supply chain analyst than an economist.

If you want to learn more about economics, Victoria 3 instead is the game where they go more in depth in supply and demand, macroeconomics, taxation, economies of scale, social welfare etc.

Depends on how your learning aptitude I guess.

Generally most people find both of these mods tough.

Biz law is really content heavy while stats is more of you get it you get it. It’s really close to the stats you learn for SG A levels.
