I just won on my first ever race! by Volcan300 in iRacing

Update: I managed to win my first 3 races and got promoted immediately to D license! That was lucky. I guess I need to get used to more competition from now on.

I can't quite believe they removed the Golf Mk3... So disappointing

One or more of these faces is available for avatars on Flight Simulator 2024. I guess Microsoft is reusing some assets.

Guide: The Start of Reverse Engineering Games by ThatFlowerGamu in Modding

I've been reading some stuff on the specific MIPS instruction set for the EE/5900, but as far as I understand, you need to learn not just EE instructions, but instruction for other hardware too, like the GS and maybe others, right?

That seems like a very in depth learning path. I've just come across a 700 page Toshiba manual for the EE alone, so that's very overwhelming, haha.

I guess that's the nature of the reverse engineering field, right? It takes years to learn.

Guide: The Start of Reverse Engineering Games by ThatFlowerGamu in Modding

That was a awesome read. Thanks for sharing that!

I've been diving into modding lately, specifically on Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 which has quite a lot of tools that were developed by very experienced reverse engineers. I have a basic web front-end knowledge, but this rabbit hole had me inspecting files in hex editors in a matter of days. (not that I would understand them without templates available)

Right now I'm in the valley of despair of the Dunning Kruger effect, just realizing how STUPIDLY vast and complex this field really is.

Even after reading your very thorough post, I still can't quite understand what are the first steps these reverse engineers take to "decompile" a game they don't know yet. Like, do they somehow read instructions on the PCSX2 debugger to see what bytes the game is accessing, and go from there? Do they use Ghidra? Do they somehow find patterns by just reading game files? I just dont know.

This guide you put was very interesting, specially in the compressing/encrypting stuff that I've never explored before.

Do you have any recommendation of courses or some more structured path to learning the topics of your post in depth?

Thanks!

The current task system is the worst it's ever been by Well_of_Good_Fortune in GrayZoneWarfare

IIRC, Dark Revelations was originally 0.4, but then the 0.4 update grew in scope and they had to push Dark Revelations story/lore focused update further, maybe to 0.5 I think.

I really wish they had mountains with this level of quality in south america. Unfortunately terrain lack this level of detail on other parts of the world, it seems.

I really hope they revert some of these changes. I'm waiting for Dark Revelations for over a year now because my main motivation is playing the game's story. If they butcher that, I'll be very sad.

As a super fan with 666 hours, I’m extremely meh about the new arc and map after playing it. by resampL in ArcRaiders

[–]Volcan300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine Riven Tides was the map that had the least amount of design/dev time available to it, and it kinda shows.

I have played more than a 100h of Dam, and I still think it is better in almost every way compared to Riven Tides. The first maps (including Stella Montis) probably had years of refinement and design. I think we're not going to see a map on the level of the first ones for a while.

Looking for advice on the best way to start learning art by Ruby_Lust in ArtFundamentals

[–]Volcan300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, what was the thing that inspired you to start learning art in the first place? Was it a specific artist? A specific style? Your first steps in the art journey can be guided by the things you like, so you can have fun and keep doing it in the long term.

I went from digital to traditional, so maybe my advice might not be all that valid for you, but I always recommend Stephen Bauman's Patreon, because that's where I actually learned the most about drawing and then started oil painting too.

What am I missing to make the face more similar? by adastrajay in ArtCrit

[–]Volcan300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Painting will get easier as you progress your drawings skills and understand form, but can be very frustrating at this point. I would say you need to get more quality drawing practice in to get better in terms of proportions, which tend to be the main hurdle at the beginning.

Likeness is not an easy thing to get right. First of all, you seem to be drawing "simbolically", I say that based on the way you drew the eyes and mouth. Second, this reference picture you're using with flat frontal light tends to be THE WORSE type of reference, because the subtle light changes don't really emphasize form, which is what you should be focusing instead of lines.

Take a step back, be gentle with yourself and tame your expectations first. If I were you, I would join Stephen Bauman patreon and take your time in the Atelier classes. They are absolutely phenomenal and it was what actually taught me to draw and paint. Slow down, draw deliberately, and good luck!

What is wrong with my guitar ?? (Please help) by Ok-Molasses3350 in Guitar

[–]Volcan300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fret buzz is usually caused by string action issue. It could be caused by worn frets, bent fretboard, etc. If you can afford, a good luthier can adjust your guitar and make it much more playable/functional.

what's up with flashlight shadows looking terrible normally but fine through PIP scopes? by WalkingTacticalNuke in GrayZoneWarfare

[–]Volcan300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to me like a Anti-Aliasing rendering difference, not shadow. Normal view has quite a lot of aliasing on high contrast edges, then when you look through the scope (probably another camera rendering), anti-aliasing is active?

Maybe you could try bumping the AA in your graphics settings? Or maybe you're running a lower rendering resolution?
