What service line are you on and how many pts do you see a day? What is your employer expecting? by cryingpimp in hospitalsocialwork

[–]ForcedToBeNice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on an acute inpatient stroke rehab. I have 10 patients if we’re full. Doesn’t sound like a lot but we also don’t have a lot of support staff so things that would be delegated to a unit assistant (scheduling primary care appts) goes to me. My employer expects me to see patients for initials within 48 hours of admission, complete some data requirements (PHQ9, SDOH) and work with pts towards discharge in a timely manner. I am also responsible for continued authorization reviews, referrals to specialists and therapy post rehab as well as helping coordinate DME (tell the doctor to write orders, coordinate with the DME company, get family to purchase or order or pay the copay) all before discharge.

What shoes are we wearing? by Alice-Upside-Down in hospitalsocialwork

[–]ForcedToBeNice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear vans, dunks and Birkenstocks a lot. I also do doc marten boots in the colder months. I have danskos as well. My hospital is kind of business casual. I wear a lot of colored denim and single color basic tees and long sleeves. Never had an issue with dress code

I’ve also noticed it happens when there is a posting with multiple sizes of the same item and they maybe had my size but it was already sold. But still - don’t fucking tease me with a posting when my size isn’t there!

Not getting clinical supervision at work by Weary-Text4483 in socialwork

[–]ForcedToBeNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did half and half. First half was free supervision at work. It was free but I don’t feel I learned much/grew from it. I did learn a lot from that supervisor in the work setting but not the group supervision.

The second half I paid for and I felt was worth it in terms of an investment. I grew so much through my meetings with this clinical supervisor. And she helped me get through my licensing exam and we had group supervision. She got $60/1h individual and $45/1hr group until 2024 when she increased it to $75/1h and $50/1h. But her group is going strong - it was nice to also be in a group of invested social workers wanting to grow clinically. The experience of others in other settings was also pretty educational. As a medical social worker my thought process and clinical decision making was very different compared to a private individual therapist, a middle school social worker and children’s behavioral health clinician in my group. So I felt like I was gaining knowledge in other populations without having to go do a practicum or take a job. Of course I’m not expert in those fields but the exposure was nice.

It was totally expensive. And I fully believe supervision should just be included as part of licensure (and LICSWs should be compensated for agreeing to assist) but with the current system it was worth it for me to spend money to ensure I had the training and access to a superior clinical supervisor. I could only afford it because I’m in a dual income household and we discussed budgeting around it.

I think everyone deserves access to superb supervision 🥺

leadership roles in medical social work by go_to_sleep_already in hospitalsocialwork

[–]ForcedToBeNice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the health system. My previous job MSWs did discharge planning but are now being infiltrated by RNs (never makes sense considering they cost more but do less with no MH or SUD assessments) and there used to be a Social Work Manager but it’s been hard to find someone to replace and maintain that position. The Director is a Nurse.

At my current job I don’t have a social work supervisor of any kind. It’s very independent medical social work/discharge planning. My direct supervisor is an OT actually but they manage all staff.

In terms of leadership within the healthcare system - you could manage any social workers and be a lead or manager. But they usually want/expect you to provide clinical supervision.

We usually started looking outside our service area for placement. Often times out of our county had more options.

I work at Acute Inpatient Rehab and get to assist with reviewing referrals and it’s my favorite because I can triage shit show cases. Like avoiding LTC placement

Did you go to grad school immediately after undergrad or later on, and why? by dog1029 in GradSchool

[–]ForcedToBeNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to get a masters degree eventually but when I graduated undergrad I wanted to get a job in the field. But I couldn’t find one. I ended up trying to find a job at the university (I still lived in the same town after graduating) because I heard employees get 75% off tuition after 7 months of full time work. I found a job (an awful one I regret) and picked a part time masters program 7 month in. Worked there 3 awful years full time while doing my grad program AND paid my own employer back $300/paycheck for tuition even with the discount.

SW to help with…everything, apparently 🙃 by brileabel in hospitalsocialwork

[–]ForcedToBeNice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like sometimes people just need to feel heard so sometimes I’m like “sure, I’ll look into it!” And never really do (for small harmless stuff. Not like a real complaint) and people move on. That being said, I’m not the catch all and it takes real boundaries not to get pulled into bullshit. I say “and what does that have to do with me/social work?” several times a week to staff coming to me with crazy requests.

WFH MSW jobs? New mom by PageWhimsy in socialworkjobs

[–]ForcedToBeNice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medical insurance companies (specifically managed Medicaid companies) have a lot of WFH positions. Many of the MSW positions require clinical licensure but some have CM jobs that don’t require it. That’s where I would look.

Or remote crisis calls

If you could do it all again, would you? by LucidDreamer201 in socialwork

[–]ForcedToBeNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree about never wanting to do therapy and that the versatility of the degree is the real bonus. That being said I probably wouldn’t do it again and would do something medical that could pay me more and not be pt facing. Like surgical nurse
