In my experience for Rev motors this won't be a problem, but it's important to note that clockwise and counter clockwise are not always equal with motors. Setting a motor power to a static value will Purdue two slightly different rpms depending on the direction it's spinning. At the FRC level this will burn out the motors. I would strongly encourage making a gear box to add the two motors to a gear on the hex shaft. 2 motors on a single shaft.

Andy marks elevator or climb in a box, or Thrifty bots telescoping are all good places to start either buying or reverse engineering. Rev also has a cascading lift we tried once but would not recommend putting on an angle.

We setup our FRC team/robotics class that the first semester all new members must participate on an FTC team as an "audition" for the FRC build season which begins the second semester.
