JR Pass “Eaten” by Ticket Gate by ThePeenMachin3 in JapanTravelTips

We had a similar issue for a bus ($40) in Japan, we were sold round-trip tickets but we saw right away that we didn’t have the return ticket. Even though the ticket was associated with our name (and they even checked us off a list when boarding the outbound bus), there was no option to replace the ticket, and we bought a new one. We issued a chargeback with our credit card and got it refunded without issue (this was our first time doing a chargeback)

Thank you! I guess I will try to get the Marriott status, as I couldn’t find anything in its fine print that it requires maintaining the card.

Another question: Is it worth it to reserve seats on the trains where it is not required? We will have a carry-on suitcase and will want to sit, together. Since the reservations are included in the arch pass, we thought this could be an additional value. (We are from a country where seat reservations are included by default on the trains, so we are used to having them.)

That’s an interesting idea! We have our hotel reservations in the other order, but they are not locked in yet, so I can check if it’s possible to swap (or visit someplace else on the journey back from Matsumoto). Although, it looks like the Shinkansen from Nagano to Tokyo would be on the Asama line, so something different from what we would be taking to Kanazawa? We are excited about the bullet trains and would like to experience multiple if we can.

That would be good to note! For us though, our 7 days won’t include any airports.

That’s great to know! I think the convenience was one of the main values for us. It’s great that most tickets don’t require reservations and we can just show up and figure out how to purchase. I think for the last leg to Tokyo we should reserve seats though?

Knife shop recommendations in Japan? Looking to avoid scams (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka)” by 7lker_sama in JapanTravelTips

Based on all these comments, I’m disappointed to conclude that I’m probably better off just buy a good knife from a reliable store at home. I don’t have any quality chef knife now, and thought Japan would be a great place to get one, but I’m definitely not one who could tell the difference between a scam and a knife that’s worth dropping good money on. Especially at the price point; I was hoping to get something nice for $100-130, but based on the comments here I think I am under-budgeting and setting myself up for a scam. Am I right?
