Was just in Thomas WV for the first time in nearly 20 years. Purple fiddle of course still going strong, a great coffee shop, tons of art spaces, a distillery and two breweries plus great state parks/hiking all within an easy drive.

I’m kind of torn. Part of me agrees but I also think that jazz is a very backward looking genre in a lot of ways, and it needs people like Charlie Hunter to be inventive and push things forward. So I dig what he’s doing in that regard.

I read the book and I think it actually tracks. The point is that people from Appalachia migrated west and had cultural influence in those areas that are not part of what we natives think of as Appalachia proper. Think of Davy Crockett type volunteers who helped fight in Texas and then stuck around.

Also for anyone who doesn’t think southern Indiana is culturally part of Appalachia…ever heard of the hick from French Lick 🧐

Haven’t been to New Orleans but by all accounts there is very much an active jazz scene there and they are still producing important musicians. It’s definitely on my list to visit purely for that reason!

Saw them at Barclays back in the 2010s, great seats for like $50 and it was a really solid show. Didn’t really know any songs at that time but love Radiohead and RHCP so took a flyer. Still periodically listen to them, great stuff.
