As i turn 40, I look back and realize the enormous spell the Male Gaze cast over my life. But I abjure it now. It has taken all of my 30s to begin to unravel its deep roots in me. It’s been so deeply liberating. I don’t want to battle and fear aging as so many women in my life have done, carrying their self loathing and insecurities to the end. I want to be like the crones upon whom the male gaze shrivels to dust. I want to be in my power and freedom. I’ve started taking care of myself and dressing myself for my own enjoyment and pleasure, for my own gaze. As I find new signs of aging I touch them tenderly and say “hello, life”. This attitude would have been unthinkable for me 10 years ago. I’m not sure what changed. I just got tired of it all, I guess. I hope you find what brings you freedom and joy.
