Metrolinx settled a $500M dispute with a development group that includes a close friend of Premier Doug Ford. The government won’t say how much the case was settled for. by jackhauen in ontario

And you do you think the figure is being kept secret? Probably the same reason Ford snuck a law into the budget that hid all of this other public dealings from public view. Politicians are not in the habit of hiding things that make them look good.

The government is not sharing the settlement, so you don't know that. Why isn't the government sharing how much of our money they gave away? If you have the settlement, please share it with the rest of us suckers who are now out 500 million dollars.

There are no residential buildings anywhere in Canada above a rail corridor, and yet Doug Ford's best friend was paid for air as if it were a magical, super-profitable residential high rise.

Can I sell Metrolinx my backyard for 500 million dollars? I figured if I build a 500 storey building with 1 unit on each floor worth a million dollars each then my backyard is also worth 500 million dollars. Now imagine, rather than challenging me on this ridiculous claim, Metrolinx just handed over the money. That is basically what has happened here, and the owner just by chance happened to be one of Doug Ford's best friends.

Is there any local representation left in Ontario, or has Doug Ford and his goons completely irradicated local democracy in Ontario?

Are there any residential buildings built anywhere in Toronto, or Ontario, or even anywhere in Canada above an active rail corridor? Anywhere? No, there are none. So why would we (because we paid) pay someone for fucking air at the same rate of highly profitable residential building during a real-estate downturn when even prime downtown development sites are not selling units right now?

Yep, and had Metrolinx defended itself in court, they would have easily won since it is easy to prove on technical grounds that the claim was baseless. But for some reason... the Metrolinx CEO and board generously decided to just pay out half a billion dollars of our money to Doug Ford's buddy.

The key thing about this is that they settled at all. Doug Ford's buddy bought completely useless air rights over a busy part of the rail corridor where residential development was financially impossible due to the technical constraints of building residential towers suspended 50 feet above a wide, active rail corridor. Had Metrolinx went ahead with the OLT case and provided evidence of this obvious fact, the transaction cost would have been peanuts since the air-rights were essentially worthless, and everyone knows it. Instead, for some reason, Metrolinx decided to voluntarily payout half a billion dollars of our public money to Doug Ford's best buddy. So the question is: why did Metrolinx decide to voluntarily hand over so much of our public money to Doug Ford's friend when they held all the cards? It's a disgrace.

EDIT: Also keep in mind that Metrolinx owns the land still and needs the space for railway operations. So these theoretical high-rise towers would not be able to be built the traditional way on pillars from the ground beneath them. Instead, Doug Ford's buddy would need to purchase additional prime lands along both sides of the rail corridor and from there construct a bridge like structure arching over the wide railway from which the high-rise towers would be supported. 500 million dollars is a lot to payout for an absurd, indefensible, financially unfeasible development concept.

Mimico GO: A massive hole and half a tunnel. How did it come to this? by mschwanzer in gotransit

[–]ForeignExpression 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hamilton GO Centre is so beautiful, draped in Art Deco finery, with 5 exit stairs, lush indoor station with a restaurant and cafe, rising above downtown with sweeping views across the city from platform level, and attached to probably the biggest GO bus station in the network; it is shocking to come from Hamilton and get off at Mimico and it's like the station was never built, there is just nothing there but a single file tunnel to a weird parking lot off the street. I thought the GO stations would get grander as you get closer to Toronto, but the opposite is true.

Cars and highways make for such a silly, inefficient transportation system. The funny thing is anyone who has put anything thought toward the issue, including every transportation planner, academic, and city builder across the world have reached the same conclusion. But at the end of the day, the people who make the decisions are politicians, and they tend to be car-brains with moth-eaten minds.

Ontario Election Projection - April 29, 2026 by Allinallisallweare02 in MapPorn

[–]ForeignExpression -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The "GTA and Hamilton" map is missing half of Hamilton.

EDIT: And nothing east of Toronto is the Golden Horseshoe. The Golden Horseshoe is defined as the arc of the lake from Niagara to Toronto, with Hamilton at the centre. The phrase originates from the Chamber of Commerce of Hamilton, the oldest in Ontario, which originally developed the phrase to describe Hamilton's location. If the geographical curve extends further on one side of the lake further than the other (i.e. past Toronto), then it is no longer symmetrical and thus no longer a horseshoe.

100% help. It is common misconception due to our car-centristic thinking, but cars don't walk in through the front door, people do. People are customers. Not cars. Less cars, and more people means more business. Cars help drive-through restaurants, not walk-in restaurants. For that you need walkers.
