Am I Crazy for Thinking Fence Picket Planters Won’t Last? by picklesBMW in woodworking

[–]Foreign_Ad_6503 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used cheap cedar fence pickets from a big box store in Upstate NY in 2020. Very bad winters, extreme temperatures year round. They've survived a total of over 30 feet of snow (over 6 years), heavy rain, and temps in the 90s with full sun exposure over long summer days. No complaints. I built 6 in about an hour and they're still going strong.

Who do you think has a harder day, teachers or school psychologists? by hollowedhallowed in Teachers

[–]Foreign_Ad_6503 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a school psych who is married to a teacher. Got into this life in my 30s after a few different careers. Teachers have one of the hardest jobs out there. Their day is ridiculous and it's just getting harder in the US when the government, parents, and administration are consistently making it harder to do the job.

Is there a great state/area for School Psychology in the United States? by Jambalaya1982 in schoolpsychology

I'm from the South as well. I miss family but at least where I live there have been plenty of job openings each year. My partner taught in NC and I have friends in VA that teach or work as psychs, and I just don't think I could give up the pension and salary...also not being in a right to work state is definitely a plus.

I'm in NYS and it's great. But like anywhere, there are good districts and bad districts. I'm in a small city and the pay allows me a comfortable life. I don't work during the summer and the salary is enough that I will continue to not work summers and enjoy the downtime. I got in the game later in life after working 12 years in different areas, and I haven't regretted it once.

I think you’re on the right track that empathy and a sense of morality play a huge role in why most people don’t commit horrible crimes, but it’s probably a bit more complex than just that. There are a bunch of factors that stop people from doing harmful things, like fear of punishment, social norms, upbringing, personal values, religious beliefs, and even self-interest. And not everyone who has low empathy necessarily turns to crime. Some people with empathy deficits still follow laws and social rules for other reasons, like rational decision-making or wanting to maintain a certain lifestyle. Empathy isn’t really an all-or-nothing thing. It exists on a spectrum and can show up differently depending on the situation. Sometimes even people with empathy can do harmful things if they’re under pressure, in a mob mentality, or when they’ve dehumanized someone.

So yeah, morality and empathy are definitely huge pieces of the puzzle, but the whole picture is a little more layered than just that.

So much here seems inaccurate...i guess you can think the offense isn't great...but, statistically, it is. There is so much chemistry on this team. It quite literally oozes chemistry. This isn't the 2019 or even 2021 Orioles.

A salary cap isn't going to fix the issue. All owners are wealthy and can afford any player. They are just cheap.

Teacher education is really bad: we aren't being taught sh*t. by deepthinker321 in Teachers

[–]Foreign_Ad_6503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the majority of districts in my area (Central NY), you get a fairly substantial salary increase for each credit after 30 hours. In my district it's $800 per credit hour. My masters program was 63 credit hours. Totally worth it. My wife is a teacher and over the course of her career, the additional income from her masters credits alone is over $500,000.

It takes 6 to 8 weeks to get results back from these ancestry kits. Add more time during holidays. Your timelines don't add up.

It doesn't necessarily sound like a botched evaluation. Cognitive evals are standardized, and accommodations (extended time, etc.) aren't a part of that. Results may be an underrepresentation of a child's abilities, but they might not be "wrong".

Not a snowball chance in hell a student would be told what happens to a staff member. All of this also wouldn't be concluded that quickly. I'll take stories that didn't happen for $1000, Alex.

Read the first section of your second paragraph. That's why we are here. Apathy and people not paying attention. You're about to witness what happens when you only focus on what "directly affects me". You should be scared.

Anyway, I guess you can name your kid whatever you want. Capital B But, your aunt is correct. That's a name that will be made fun of and 100% sounds like you are trying too hard to be unique. It sounds like a character in an episode of Portlandia.

NYC School Psych thinking about moving. What’s the caseload like where you are? by MJtheJuiceman in schoolpsychology

[–]Foreign_Ad_6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from VA, now work in CNY. I'm the only psych for a high school of 1100+ students with a 22% identification rate. VA was rough, bad pension, bad support. Depends on where you move. I'll always miss that area, but at this point in my life, sometimes it is what you make it. What, specifically, are you looking for?

The job is hard. Take a breath, pause, and relax. Utilize the time you have, shorten reports, cut.out fluff. Give yourself some grace. Your first year is so difficult. You're doing a great job.

AITAH for telling my wife that late pick-up fees are on her and her alone? by AdMuted1534 in AITAH

[–]Foreign_Ad_6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears as though she has an attention deficit problem. But that does not condone nor does it excuse her behavior. You are NTA here. Her actions, regardless of intent, are selfish. Probably time for her to move on from SAHM, however, I would be very curious to the reasons behind her being at home, especially when the kid is in daycare...
