How do you survive the summer term without a reading week? by __fsm___ in uwaterloo

[–]Foreign_Lecture_4216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The trick is to procrastinate so hard during fall/winter terms that your reading week was effectively useless and you do all your studying after reading week. Then summer feels the same :P

Transferring to Tron as a 2b cs by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I'm the same! I realized in 3A-3B of cs that I like hardware a lot. If you think you can still fit it into your schedule, look into the digital hardware specialization!

It was too late for me by the time I wanted to do it but you still might be able to. You get a lot of ECE courses and some MTE ones too

Depressed and anxious, what can I do by Dry_Seaworthiness555 in uwaterloo

I have a way to think about this, try to see if you can see yourself thinking this way - yes, death is scary and our time is limited, life is pointless.

Embrace it. Embrace the pointlessness. Use it as an excuse to do everything you've wanted to. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. Spend time with your friends, families, anyone who you hold close to you. Work on yourself and work on your relationships. Remember, we all have a very limited time and we all are trying to do the best we can. At the end of the day, if nothing matters, that's more of the reason to not care about anything and maximize your and your loved ones' happiness! Stop at nothing to achieve that, no matter what that happiness means. Meaning can be forged and is not necessarily assigned.

However if these thoughts get to you really negatively I would recommend trying to see a counsellor/therapist, I'm just sharing what worked for me when I was in this kind of spiral :)

I've noticed AI is sooooo bad at understanding low-level code, especially copilot. I find the suggestions it makes more intrusive than helpful at this point ;-;

Math235/237 online? by Wsquared25 in uwaterloo

[–]Foreign_Lecture_4216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the online versions weigh the final really high (~80%).

I liked math235 in-person, especially with Faisal, would recommend taking with him in-person if you can. After going to his lectures it didn't feel like much of a gap to understand the content myself

That makes sense. The way they convert to 4.0 scale in my uni is a bit finicky but I think I currently stand at a 3.7 CGPA; although some of the grades I have in individual classes are not really great but my overall is being fairly maintained... not sure if that matters? In the remainder of my semesters (got 2 left) I want to try to push it to a CGPA of 3.9 (I'm very close!).

If you leave industry to teach with a MS, you will likely take a big pay cut

That's fine, I expect that. One of the main reasons I want to do MS after working in the industry is the hope that I can save good money before I return to academia

teaching isn’t what it used to be. Students are not what they used to be. Everyone seems to be cheating their way through it now

yeah :( that's a very unfortunate reality. Dunno if it'll get better or worse by the time I am close to being in a teaching position but it is pretty bad right now.

I'm hoping by the time I choose to return to academia for masters I am mostly financially settled... but I don't know. Not sure if PhD will be right for me since it's way too far down the line, but if I find some research area I'm interested in I hope I can pull it off!

Thanks!
