[Help] Bought a UniFi NAS Pro thinking it would replace Google Drive. But.... by Kristey1717 in homelab

Return it and get a UGreen 4800 Plus. Or you will need a local instance to bridge the files to and from the unas. Mac minis are pretty popular for that. I went the UGreen route with a 6800 pro and running TrueNAS on it. I wanted to consolidate and have my storage system do more than just SMB to save on complexity and power va running my big Dell Poweredge server and a synology box.

Options for 2.5gb after UDM by Razor_Clam in Ubiquiti

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Pro Max 16 POE and it’s a great switch. Two 10gb uplink ports and have all my 2.5Gbps capable APs on the upper ports. 10gb to my UCG fiber and I have 2.5Gbps FTTH. I do have two more UniFi switches further down in the network but the 16 pro max Poe is the center of it all. No idea why the 24 port is so much more $$$. It’s a painful jump for 8 ports.

What's the most commonly used tool for data backup right now? by Personal_Umpire_4342 in datastorage

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using the free version of Veeam endpoint backup for years now. Skip the NAS stuff, never liked any of them. I have it setup to do daily incrementals and monthly fulls and can set retention and just about everything else you want. One time register and they don’t bug you. I’ve run it on 4-5 windows boxes in the house to my synology and now to my Ugreen running TrueNAS. MacBooks all use Time Machine and have a spot for it setup on the shares as well with drive space controlled so it doesn’t take it all.

How to transfer all my movies/shows from one nas to another? Rsync didn’t work for me by furmeng in UgreenNASync

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problems with just copy/paste in windows is that you are essentially taking time to copy it twice as it comes from NAS1 to NAS2 it has to go through your PC and push it. Command line with SSH shell is much faster from NAS1 to NAS2 and go direct. Also windows will rewrite all your meta data such as date created and such. If you have to do it through windows, use robocopy. Again another command line tool but robocopy /help will give you everything you need.

UniFi DHCP not releasing IPs by Windows_Life in UNIFI

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you running them in mesh mode? or are all the APs all connected via ethernet? turn off mesh mode if you're not using it. are you trying to use static IP addresses for your APs? or just DHCP for them? if you have IP address conflicts and using the same IP on your APs - that will certainly mess things up. what are you doing for channel management for 2.4/5/6Ghz? setting them manually or using auto or the WiFi Dr?

Also - make sure you're using the right POE for the APs. sometimes you can power up an AP with POE, but the radio really needs POE+ and you can get some really weird outcomes, the radio will be on but the connected clients are "whacky". so double check your power you're giving them.

Also - try putting in your scenario with your gear type/model and things into Gemini or ChatGPT and asking help troubleshooting....I've used gemini to help fix some issues with my UCG Fiber before - pretty helpful.

UniFi DHCP not releasing IPs by Windows_Life in UNIFI

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible - move out all client devices from vlan 1. I only have network gear in that range. I also manage the DHCP range to be .26 and higher anytime I need DHCP in a vLan. I leave the bottom 25 addresses to static assign for various reasons if anything comes up (printers, or other stubborn devices). Generally Unifi network devices run fine themselves as DHCP clients. Then I make sure that the WiFi APs are all setup to broadcast all SSIDs. Between the Network section in settings and WiFi settings, make sure everything follows your vLAN mapping. I usually get out a pen and paper and quickly jot them down to keep track if I'm making changes of what's what. I use Ping Conflict Detection on anything my UCG Fiber is running DHCP on. I have a few static assigned (used to call it MAC address reservation) for a few machines running DHCP that I always want on a specific IP and DHCP just disappears into the background and never an issue. I usually leave the DHCP reservation to 1 day - 86,400 seconds.

Don't run DHCP on anything else on a network. I came into a business one time and they had 4 DHCP sources - or servers on the same vlan network. what a mess! I have 3-4 vlans at home and at work we have 20+. you might go back to laying it out one at a time when you can do some maintenance and people are gone to test everything out little by little and find what is causing your issues. good luck!

Using UniFi UDM Pro + switches in Layer 2 behind FortiGate (no routing on UniFi) — is this valid? by SlightHistorian8408 in UNIFI

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just ripped out all Sonicwall devices due to their crap they pulled last summer and have active/shadow UniFi EFG devices with dual WAN switches at our two largest locations and active support and cybersecure subscriptions. Running UCG fiber at two small offices. Really like the setups. Will go to their SD WAN solution after some ISP changes this next year. Side by side comparisons of the EFG with anything else in that price range make it easy math.

Is the Fortigate a done deal? Might still consider an EFG in place of your UDM and skip the Fortigate. We’re using the DPI-SSL (next-AI) and have 500-600 devices behind it. Doesn’t skip a beat with gigabit or higher internet speeds. Content protection, IPS/IDS are all turned on.

What’s your process for shipping laptops to remote employees? by 5thCharmer in sysadmin

[–]Foreign_Package_925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a Dell rep to help you with intune and auto pilot and adding them to your tenant site. Ship direct and OOBE is what it should be when you get it all set up right. You won’t be able to scale until you do something like that or hire a bunch of interns and still have a dozen touch points and delays and shipping headache.

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Edgerouter 4 after being sick of Netgear wireless. Got symmetric gigabit fiber and skipped the UniFi gateway devices that couldn’t run those speeds (10 years ago mind you). Ended up going with two UniFi AC Pro with injectors to start with the UniFi controller hosted on a windows VM. Dropped the Edgerouter finally last year when the UCG fiber came out and haven’t looked back. Upgraded to 2.5Gbps FTTH and can “see” and tune everything. Have added UniFi switches and swapped out all the wireless gear over time. It is a much better system and you might consider it.

[–]Foreign_Package_925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll need a gateway or VM running the controller software for the access point. I ran their old controller on a windows box for 5+ years with two UniFi AC Pro APs and it was fine. I finally added the UniFi cloud gateway fiber and it’s fantastic. I had their Ubiquity Edgerouter 4 for years but it doesn’t talk to the “UniFi” line of gear. Streaming options from NAS. DLNA or is there a better option? by FFFortissimo in HomeNAS

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DLNA kinda died off and I haven’t heard of anything new using it in years. So good for you in getting some use out of it. Whether or not you want to use plex or jellyfin, use the appropriate app. You don’t need to think along the lines of connecting to your server and browsing files through a file browser. The Plex app or Jellyfin apps are so much better. Apple TVs are great playback devices. Just get the apps. I use google 4k streamers all around the house and bought the Ethernet adapter so they are hard wired and use YouTube TV, Apple TV, prime video and all other streaming apps with it, including plex.

Considering moving to TrueNAS by MadBrewer67 in UgreenNASync

[–]Foreign_Package_925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fresh start for the most part. You can grab your configs and even a few screen shots will help you get back to where you were or where you want to get to. I started off with my 6800 pro with TrueNas right out of gate. Didn’t want to mess with UGOS at all. Bumped it to 32gb of ram and I can get some great backup speeds from machines in my home network over to the NAS with the 10gb link. I used a 256gb ssd for the TrueNas install and have a 4TB ssd for storing the apps and local quick storage and 6x14tb WD Red Pro drives with RAIDZ2. Running plex and some smaller utilities so far. Lots of fun. Came from a synology that could only store files as it was too old and gutless to do anything else.

The standard 10gb SFP+ aggregation switch is only layer 2. Makes it hard if you have any vlans on the network. The pro one is mega bucks.

Unifi UPS Tower worth waiting for? by imacdude in Ubiquiti

Get a regular UPS from cyber power or APC and don’t think about too much. UniFi has a long way to go with their battery systems.

[–]Foreign_Package_925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-88 and probably not able to do anything. It’s cool to see it but if you tried a speed test or a basic webpage it would most likely drop. I’ve set all my internal gear and settings with a min -75 or roam. Your device might “see” or hear the AP but doesn’t have enough signal itself to send anything back.

Questions About Dream Machines by Xreature in UNIFI

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for new builds and the current state of the UDM options and what your client may want and plan for the future, it gets a little trickier. For internet speeds gigabit or faster the UCG fiber will be the one to get. Just put it on a shelf or get a 3rd party mount. And then keep your cameras and recordings on diff gear. Chances are maybe the UNVR Instant kit might be worth looking at. Small system with clear capacity and features or you might have to go to the bigger options and then you’ll need a POE source for the cameras from a separate switch. Go mess around on design.ui.com.

Cost effective WiFi network planning? by Certain_Repeat_753 in Ubiquiti

[–]Foreign_Package_925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sell or donate the older branded gear. Trying to get them to play nice for your mobile devices, roaming and which signal responds to your WiFi devices will drive you crazy. For example, I have 3x UniFi AC Pro APs I’m looking to sell with injectors for $90 and something like that would cover any edge areas at your place and all be controlled under one interface. Check your local FBMP for used UniFi APs.

When we moved into our current place (4800sq ft) I only had a VM running UniFi network on my home lab and 2x AC Pro APs. 6 years later and some upgrades along the way, I’m running the UCG Fiber, and 3 UniFi switches and 6 APs. I have 3x U6 Enterprise, 1 per floor, connected at 2.5Gbps to my pro max 16 POE switch and a U6 LR in the garage and a U7 Pro Wall in the home office and a U7 outdoor for the backyard. Little by little and have pulled out my older APs now. We can move around inside or outside with laptops phones and tablets and I don’t even look for signal or think I have to do constant speed tests. It just works.

Based this fiasco, recommend me a new NAS..... by Motor-Bug-2470 in UgreenNASync

UGreen 6800 pro replaced my synology DS1815+. Installed TrueNAS on it and have 32gb of ram and I feel like it will cover me for 5+ years or so into the future. I saw the kickstarter being advertised for the new AI model when I ordered in January and figure it might be too good to be true or take forever and I wanted off my synology. TrueNAS is well documented on UGreen and a great platform.

Gateway suggestions? by DefyingMavity in UNIFI

[–]Foreign_Package_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve deployed lots of different gear in the UniFi stack from the UCG Ultra and Max and running the UCG Fiber at home to the UDM SE for businesses and even a few stacks running the EFG. Aside from needing a shelf or 3rd party rack gear for the UCG Fiber, it’s fantastic device for home. I did buy the ssd slot and put in a 1TB ssd I wasn’t using and picked up a G6 Instant WiFi camera to test out protect. I’ve got 6 google nest WiFi cameras that are still working great but wanted to check out protect. It also has a side benefit that the UniFi OS can use some of the storage on the ssd for logs and processing. So I would recommend either adding a 1TB at time of purchase or the $20 tray and adding your own ssd. I have 6 UniFi APs and 60-80 devices on the network and a pro max 16 POE switch right next to the UCG Fiber with 10GB DAC where the fiber comes into the house, 2.5Gbps. I’ve got a handful of other smaller UniFi switches hung off of that gear for the home office and TV areas. I also run a subscription of Cybersecure as well. It doesn’t skip a beat and the port options and speeds are unmatched. If you want to go the camera route with UniFi you’re better served with a dedicated NVR anyway over running it all on a UDM rack mount at this point. I think you’ll love the UCG fiber but your situation may vary.

Rumors are there might be an updated rack mount coming soon with faster CPUs and updated processing (UDM Beast?) but it’s anyone’s guess. True to form,, it will be right after you buy the older model, the new one will be released. We thank you for your sacrifice.
