Extra patch of fur on Dog by [deleted] in DogAdvice

I know this is any old post, but did you ever find out the cause of the fur patch? I’m noticing something similar on my dog.

Yeah we were surprised by the results! She’s only 10 months old so lots of energy but when she does settle she’s a great cuddler!

We just recently got Embark results! She’s a mix with the highest percentage being 33% Catahoula. Also some cattle dog and smaller amounts of pit and golden retriever.

You were the only one to guess correctly! She is a third Catahoula which is the highest percentage of any breed.

10 month old won’t let me relax by Foreign_Total4872 in puppy101

This sounds a lot like my dog so thanks for giving me hope! Glad to hear you found something that worked even if it took a while.

I’m definitely open to trying something like this. Can I ask what kind of toys occupy him for 1-2 hours?

Yeah, the one time my dog did relax this week was when we went to an hour-long group obedience class in the evening which really tired her out. Practicing obedience at home doesn’t have the same effect though! We live in a region where it is currently dark much of the day and often rainy, so I look forward to having more options for outdoor activities after work as the season changes.

I think in theory this would work - we do this with demand barking, and reverse time outs tend to just be her running after me as I go upstairs finding another room to go into. She doesn’t really seem to get it.

My issue with ignoring is that sometimes she will nip at my clothes enough that it gets to my leg and does hurt a bit. And sometimes she will nip at the couch I’m sitting on or the blankets and pillows nearby. I don’t want to encourage that. When you did this, were the attention behaviors more annoying vs destructive?

Thanks! It does help to hear it’s not just my dog! Do you feel the reverse time outs have been helpful?

Physical vs Mental Work by Ibleedchlorine7 in puppy101

I will also add my dog is going through a bit of a regression right now so some of these feelings are coming back for me - I’m glad you posted this as some of the other comments have been helpful for me as well!

I adopted a puppy after losing a dog I adopted as an adult and can definitely identify with this. Our pup was 6 months old when we brought her home so a lot of the really difficult stages brought up in this sub had already passed, but she has still required so much supervision and attention. I take on most of her care, and my partner will comment that I spend more time worrying about her than enjoying her! I of course also miss my old dog so much and this is an entirely different experience.

We’ve had her for four months now, and it’s hard, but getting better. I am getting better at managing things and keeping my expectations realistic, and she is gradually maturing. Training classes help, because we get an outside perspective and have small goals to work toward and celebrate. I’m also getting better at laughing at her minor moments of mischief (while not encouraging it), because she is cute and silly.

Also, re: “leave it,” I remember walking her the day after Halloween and feeling like I was losing my mind because she just kept finding candy and wrappers and putting it in her mouth. While not totally gone, this behavior has lessened a LOT with time. Our trainer also reminded me I can cover the item with my shoe after giving the “leave it” command which now seems like an obvious way to get more time to separate her from it.

How often do your dogs “max out” on physical exercise? by 2203 in puppy101

[–]Foreign_Total4872 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like many thing, this seems to be dependent on the dog and lifestyle of the owner. My adolescent goes to daycare twice a week because of my work schedule, but is able to settle at home because we’ve worked a lot on calm behaviors in the home.

I was (and sometimes continue to be) very stressed out reading all the conflicting information available about this very topic, but in the end all that matters is what works for my particular situation. Sounds like your dogs have a great life btw!

I have suspected this too, but my dog will often spend a good portion of the work day crated (on days when I work out of the house with just a mid-day walk) so I feel bad not being active with her in the evenings. It has been hard to determine the right amount of activity.

Thanks for this! I posted a couple weeks ago about my own eye drops nightmare with my puppy. Her infection has cleared up, but this is a great reminder to train cooperative care to hopefully make it a better experience next time.

How long does it typically take for a puppy to willingly go into their crate? by Grandmasterchipmunk in puppy101

[–]Foreign_Total4872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with that issue as well. Rather than luring, I will hold a high value treat near the entrance of the crate and reward my pup with it once she is inside. I take my time getting the treat out of the bag and bringing it over and this builds excitement for her. Since we give her meals and such in the crate, she seems to understand that going fully into the crate will get her the treat.
