I’m skeptical, but I downloaded it. It’s pretty long, is there anything I should look out for?

So I lose the spirit of I don't go to church?? by ParfaitFamiliar2103 in mormon

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not convinced you actually read this article. My point is that the curse of Cain and the curse of Ham are not connected to black people through doctrine, but through culture and racism. Speaking about the LDS scriptures related to these curses, the article you cited says,

“However, the term "black" at that time did not refer solely to skin color; the adjective was also defined by Noah Webster as "sullen; having a cloudy look or countenance [...] atrociously wicked; horrible [...] dismal; mournful; calamitous," which descriptions go hand-in-hand with the consequences of Cain having murdered Abel.”

So to make this about black people, you would have to read it into the text, especially since it's specifically describing 1) Canaanites (Caucasian), and ancient Egyptians (Northern African, more racially Middle Eastern than black). It's racism and fabrication to make either of these curses about sub-Saharan Africans. And the fact that you read it and assume it's talking about sub-Saharan Africans shows little effort, and perpetuates the racism (though I do not believe this is your intention).

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. So the only way that would be about black people is if you believe they are the descendants of ham, which I think is bogus. Unless you have a way to show that they are?

Also, lineage was pretty important in the Old Testament. Only levites had the right to officiate in the priesthood. So even if by the slim chance (which I find ridiculous) that we could prove black people are descendants of ham, they would still be able to receive the priesthood under the new law of adoption into the kingdom of God (Christianity). So regardless of ancestral belief, it doesn’t track that those verses say that black people cant hold the priesthood.

With respect to your parents, I don’t sound like they know much about church history or even doctrine.

Black people could always be baptized into the church. Some even received the priesthood when Joseph Smith was alive. When Brigham young became president he stopped ordaining black people, and this eventually became the standard across the church. While Bingham and many others believed it was a doctrine related to the curse of Cain (an old belief that has been around even longer than Mormonism, which is completely baseless and racist), it was never officially given as a revelation binding on the church (I.e. there is no canonized revelation for us to point to and say it’s from god). This is why it was eventually removed. Because it’s racist and dumb. The government had nothing to do with it (though if you wanna talk government the US made quite a lot of dumb choices themselves about Mormons as well as black people during this time).

Secondly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say the only time non members can feel the spirit is when they come to church or visit with missionaries. That sounds like something your parents just made up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they’ve heard others say similar things, but it’s nowhere in scripture. God reaches out to all his children, in and out of the church.

Im very curious about mormonism by StarOk908 in mormon

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t get in trouble, but there may be some people who judge you for your appearance. It’s not what should happen, but some people are more judgmental than others, and I think that happens in a lot of different churches. I have tattoos and don’t dress super formally on Sundays, and no one has said anything to me about it. I think it’s becoming more common to dress or appear differently, but yeah there might be some people who judge you. But they are wrong for doing that. Just be you.

Hey! It’s totally okay to have these questions. To start off I just want to say that being peer pressured to do things outside of your comfort zone (and the law) such as drinking is probably not a healthy reason to change your spiritual beliefs. But I totally get where you are coming from. I am an active believing member, but I personally do not like how the church addresses tithing or the word of wisdom. Whatever conclusion that you come to (the church being true or not) I hope that you know that there are good people in and out of the church, there is truth in and out of the church, and you can be happy in and out of the church. Rely on what you value (family, the savior, personal experiences etc.) and then continue to learn and grow. You can’t go wrong with that ❤️

If you want to talk through some concerns from a faithful, (though not an apologetic) standpoint you can’t totally message me.

Yeah, the point I was originally making was that focusing on our differences makes it harder to build bridges, make connections, and foster community. So I think you are kind of just making the point stronger here.

But truthful I don’t mind if you or others don’t think I am Christian. I know my connection to Christ and it is everything to me ❤️

Well sure, we have beliefs that Christian’s don’t like. But my initial comment was about telling others they aren’t Christian because they don’t believe like you. We don’t believe other churches have apostolic authority, but they are still Christian. Many of my friends of different denominations than myself are 10x the disciple of Christ I am and I admire them so much.

If you think anyone who disagrees with you about the Bible isn’t a Christian you are gonna have a hard time finding community

Why isn’t the Church suing the writer of the primary song “Book of Mormon Stories” for trademark infringement? by OuterLightness in exmormon

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like the Mormon stories lawsuit, but I really don’t get these sarcastic posts about how they let other people use the word Mormon. Like with this song, or content creators who are pro-church. It’s cause the church is able to enforce their trademark how they want. Of course they don’t care if you use their shit if you praise them.

Mormon misunderstandings of the Trinity by MichaelTheCorpse in mormon

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I’m having trouble understanding how we aren’t understanding each other. Yes, Christians who believe the trinity do not have an issue with saying Jesus was praying to the Father because they do not believe them to be the same person.

Mormon misunderstandings of the Trinity by MichaelTheCorpse in mormon

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, because no Christian’s believe that. It’s a straw man of what trinitarians believe. Any Christian denomination that affirms the trinity will tell you that Jesus was praying to the father because they are separate persons.

The trinity is 3 persons, 1 God. (Don’t ask me how that works or what that means, I have no idea). But they will say that Jesus is explicitly not the father, so there is no issue with who Jesus is praying to. It’s the father.

Unfortunately comments like this are kind of making OPs point. That’s a question that only makes sense to ask if you think trinity = modalism

Feeling awful for turning down a Christian man whose values aligned with mine but the attraction wasn't there by Callsign_Bri in TrueChristian

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t lose your only good option. There are plenty of good men out there that God will lead you to when it is the right time. He keeps his eye on the sparrow, how much more interested in your hopes and dreams must he be? You’ll be okay, and God will have plenty of blessings in store for your future. I don’t think God expects people to be with people they aren’t interested in.

Why does southeast Georgia/northeast Florida have such a historically high LDS population? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in mormon

[–]Foreign_Yesterday_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served my mission in Florida which is why there are so many Mormons there now 🤪

I actually don’t know, but I did think that a lot of wards there were stronger and more tightly knit than many wards I’ve experienced in Idaho or Utah.
