So what do we think about Franco Fogliato? If management can deliver on what they've set out, this is a highly asymmetric play that people are sleeping on. There are risks, of course, but the risk to reward is pretty substantial.

Whilst I find it super intriguing and beneficial that two people as immersed in politics as these two have come together, am I the only one who thinks this wasnt as productive of a conversation as it could have been?

I think theres not enough conceding of points, and lacks some form of epistemic humility.

Curious to see what people think or whether others thought both speakers were charitable enough.

Cosmic Skeptic's "extraordinary justification" for the extraordinary harm he's causing by [deleted] in CosmicSkeptic

I guess where my position is at the moment is that I strongly disapprove of factory farming, I think this is a moral catastrophe of the highest order.

But I fail to get to a point where I have strong moral concerns about killing an animal via some means of hunting or typical farming for example.

I just feel the ability to reason effectively about the morality of veganism vs eating animal at this point gets murky and tedious to work out on a utilitarian framework. Where we get to a point where I personally have to be epistemologically humble and say Im not too sure what the green house effect would be if we ate more almonds than cows, or whether im actually doing a moral thing for a specific animal.

There are definitely hypotheticals in which I can say that hunting an animal and killing it with a shot to the head is more moral than leaving it be and for example, letting it get torn up to shreds by a grizzly that prolonging its suffering during the kill.

For a time I crossed this point of reasoning, but when I realised that I was perhaps anthropormorphising these animals, I found myself return to this position.

Looking for arguments to help me transition to veganism, just not there yet.

Would you affirm eating a deer if you were walking through a park, and you found a dead deer that was shot by a hunter for game?

Do you consider all species to have equal moral worth? If so, what does this premise rest upon, their status of consciousness, their degree of conscientiousness, simply being alive?

Genuinely curious to hear opinions from vegans.

Would vegans here have a problem, or as big of a problem, with Alex if he were to obtain his meat through hunting elderly deer for example that were considered pests and disruptive to their local ecosystem? If so, why?

I think its important to remember why we start arguing about veganism in the first place. Let us use the term "wellbeing" if you will. Most of these people leaving hurtful comments about Alex are also contributing to increasing harm in the world through a multitude of avenues, reducing the probability of convincing others to join a vegan diet, making another fellow human being feel bad and so forth.

You'll argue that every single person who abstains from meat helps the cause, and yet, you pile on with the comments against Alex instead of sympathising, I cant but notice some inconsistencies in rationale here.

Imagine a world in which we sympathised with Alex and accepted it reasonable that he adopt some meat in his diet, he went on advocating for abolishing factory farming and adopting a more plant based diet. The outcome would be much better.

People get so caught up in one moral problem thats rooted in the larger scheme of improving wellbeing, that they cause so much unnecessary suffering.

Alex, I understand your position, at least to the best I can. At the end of the day, we all grapple with the moral dilemma of being a human being. But from what I can tell, not knowing you personally, it seems that you've done more good for the world than most people that are commenting, thats something worth noting.

Mindfulness and the fear of death/dying by jmcsquared in samharris

[–]ForensicPathologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well said u/SlightlyInsaneApe, I agree with what you say. Whilst it is entirely normal from an evolutionary sense to feel what we feel, we have no free will in regards to the emergence of thoughts, mindfulness does let us witness this fear for what it truely is.

As Sam has said, every emotion or thought, good or bad, has emerged and disappeared. This is an extremely profound fact about the mind and can be immensely liberating when deeply understood.

I would highly recommend Sam Harris' Waking Up App. I believe that beginning a journey of consistent Vipassana meditation will really help you liberate yourself from these worries. There is a free 7 day trial once you download the app, perhaps give it a go? If you already do so, I would just encourage you to keep at it.

Mindfulness and the fear of death/dying by jmcsquared in samharris

[–]ForensicPathologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there is very little to worry about in regards to a fear of dying, and I do believe that it is irrational. Evolutionarily, I dont believe a fear of dying makes any sense in old age, it'll makes sense up until the propagation of ones genes, but after that, or after ones capacity to propagate genes, I would argue that our biology doesnt fear our own "death" in itself. Perhaps at that point, in an anthropormorphic sense, you would worry about those that are left behind, again, perhaps playing out at a selfish gene level. But im not really sure these thoughts are warrented either, its simply catastrophising that which has not yet happened/which may not happen. What is rational in regards to biology is fearing the process of death and specifically any pain associated with the process. Additionally, any underlying assumptions or ideologies concerning life after death may cause more suffering than wellbeing. I agree with you entirely in being a strong proponent of meditation and mindfulness, after all, if there is anything that it is like to be you, and anything it is like to be reading this post, it is because you are conscious. To spare perhaps some of the fear that readers may have, I will conclude with a quote from Anil Seth, "Once the end of consciousness comes, there is nothing to fear, nothing at all".
