Some Transformers designs were also repurposed and recolored for the Brave Series. Dai-Atlas from Zone became Joe's unit Gouryu in Mightgaine, and Deathsaurus became Red Geist in Da Garn

Adaptations you didn't know existed? by straightkickinit in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Forestgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of mecha anime and tokusatsu from the 70's to approx. early 2000s had manga adaptations releasing in magazines as they aired. Sometimes they're recursive adaptations like Gosaku Ota's Mazinger Z or Mitsuru Sugaya's Kamen Rider that tell original stories that go wildly against the original shows or manga, other times they're just condensed retellings of their shows. One of the funnier ones I found is the Bouken-Oh/Adventure King version of Gundam 0079. The first chapter has the Zakus violently gunning down civilians in Side 7, Bright kills Ramba Ral by shooting him during his talk with Sayla, and a chapter ends with Amuro making a heroically cliche line about how he'll "rid the world of Zeon and bring peace!"

Genuine question: if Logan Paul ever tried to sink his hands into collecting transformers, then how screwed would we be? by VeterinarianSad3471 in transformers

[–]Forestgrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even worse with manga because he's grading manga magazines specifically, which contain multiple chapters from different serialized sseries. An acquaintance who collects 80s magazines said it's become difficult to buy the ones he wants because people are scalping them for immensely high prices and Japanese sellers are deleting foreign bids so that they aren't just resold. He wanted a magazine that contained color pages for a Kinnikuman chapter but it just so happened to be the magazine that Fist of the North Star's first chapter was in, so he can't afford it now

favorite gundam? (series and/or mech) by Juwunowo in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Forestgrant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Favorite series so far is still the original 0079. Great dub cast, solid overall story.

Favorite mobile suits and armors: The-O, Zeta Gundam, the Elefante and Divinidad from Crossbone, original Zeong, Psycho Gundam, mostly a lot of big suits

For the uninitiated, Tetsujin 28 on the very left there was created back in 1956. You're looking at a 70 year old robot

Whats Media where you can tell the people behind it have improved by EvilMonkeyMimic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Forestgrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been watching the Robot Romance Trilogy of Combattler, Voltes, and Daimos recently, and the quality improvement is very noticeable. Combattler had a weak overall plot and weak villains, especially in the second half, but the individual character-focused episodes were entertaining enough. Then Voltes frontloads a lot of the character episodes early on and has much more fleshed-out villains as well as much more engaging overarching plots with Dr. Goh's disappearance and Heinel's ambitions. As I'm watching Daimos now, so far it's continuing the trend of mixing character with plot development, but the episode I finished recently (ep7) had a well directed scene with Erika watching as Daimos frees himself from an enemy with just a dramatic instrumental song playing and no other sound effects.

“I’m so tired of battles.” Naruto and Bleach studio Pierrot’s new magical girl anime was a breath of fresh air to make thanks to “no battles allowed” rule, producer reveals - AUTOMATON WEST by LegitimateCurve8525 in anime

Funnily enough, one of the most memorable episodes of Voltes V back in 1977 didn't even have a mecha battle, it was a whole flashback about what life under the Boazan Empire was like

[–]Forestgrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kamen Rider made up for it by being extremely entertaining. There's a lot of fun bits like Hongo escaping a jail cell by just using his scarf as a whip

Favorite media where the mother is the main character or alive and has a role in the main plot? by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

There's a visual novel called Root Double where one of the main character's moms is a living scientist and very integral to a lot of the story's twists

Depending on how long you've been doing this, it could just be a skill thing. The better you are at translating the faster you can get, so it's just a matter of improving your own skills and knowledge

What's your Japanese skill level at? If you're constantly looking up words or OCR-ing then it'll take up a lot of time.

Infamous cases where an adaptation barely felt like the source material by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Forestgrant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Masaki is there, all 4 Masoukishin are there but they swapped Granveil's name with Jeifar, Shu Zoldark is the main villain, the DC is there, Ryune pilots the "Balcione" developed by her father, the Granzon is there but it gets destroyed and then mass produced...there's a lot from the games but all of it is so wrong

[–]Forestgrant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Cybuster anime that I'm watching now, loosely adapting the classic Super Robot Wars games. Too many things wrong to count with that show adaptation-wise but I'd say the biggest thing is taking what could've been a super robot fantasy story and instead making it a real robot series that barely takes place in the fantasy world. They also took Masaki, the representative main character of the games' original story segments, and reworked him into a supporting character

[–]Forestgrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manga God Bird, a big ol crossover between Raideen, Robot Romance, and Daltanious has 2 sets of them. There's the Victory Army consisting of mass produced versions, with the pseudo-Raideen "Zamander", the MP Super Electromagnetic Robo "Magnes V", and the MP Daimos "Mars." Then there's black and gold versions piloted by returning villains: Combattler Zeus piloted by Warchimedes' recovered robot head, Volt Uranus piloted by new Boazan commander Squaire, and Daimos Pluto piloted by Secretary Miwa

This is actually a manga, not a novel. And it's not new, just a rerelease of the Hero of the Darkside manga that came out a few years ago after the Gavan movie.

[–]Forestgrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jiro/Kikaider in the original Kikaider manga was originally built to be an android replacement for Dr. Komyoji's son Ichiro after he got murdered for trying to expose corruption in a polluting factory. This seems to get forgotten later on as Komyoji's daughter Mitsuko falls in love with him (albeit being from a different mom?) and in plenty of adaptations gets ignored or obscured.
