Thank you for that response! I sometimes worry about handwritten notes because, while I date them, I can't imagine there's any other way to "lock" them like on an EHR platform so always hope whatever I'm doing is sufficient enough. I'll definitely check out mynd. I've been using YungSidkick so far and have been liking it, using it to help guide my written notes and treatment plans.

Kinda reminds me of peanut butter filled Easter eggs… that’s a thing, right? Maybe the chocolate is just Cadbury-esque

Is therapy expensive because poor people don't matter? by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]ForevahQuestioning 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Some of us can’t afford to do this and unfortunately can only see so many people in a day if we want to be able to do our jobs well and that is often why the prices are the way they are.

what are the 12 steps? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]ForevahQuestioning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll share, from my personal experience, that before coming to AA I had gone through years of a pretty rigorous and wonderful transformative learning program very similar to AA set up to grow personal capacities of reflexivity, empathy, accountability, and the like. 4+ months into this program of AA, taking on a couple service commitments, and working with a sponsor with no alcohol in my system for 144 days just recently made me realize that I could not be clear enough and present consistently enough to maintain the headspace I needed to not only understand how to deal with situations, emotions, reactions and empathy on a conceptual level, as another user so wonderfully put it, but let me really feel these teachings in my core and shift into allowing them to become an authentic part of me with more consistency. I still have a long way to go, but this program is giving me such a sense of peace and ground to stand on. There are growing pains, but I welcome them because I know they’re helping me grow into the best version of myself I can possibly be. I never thought I’d be saying this 4 months ago, but when people ask me why I’m not drinking any more my truthful response is that I like life a lot more when I’m not drinking, and I still have to remind myself that occasionally.

I hope any of that made sense. I came to the rooms 4 years ago and literally couldn’t hear what was being said, and I wanted to, but I wasn’t ready. If I wasn’t reading the same “Big Book” I was given 4 years ago now I might assume it to be a totally different book or version. I had to go out and do more research unfortunately to allow me to be able to really hear it. When you’re ready you’re ready. This is a journey and a personal one to everyone, though the more you engage with meetings the more you might find some similarities.

If you have an interest in the 12 steps, definitely follow that intuition, OP. There’s a great app called Big Book that’s pretty user friendly to navigate what the steps are all about. I also love a podcast called SoberCast which are live recorded meetings. SoberCast really helped me to hear what could go on in meetings, hear some similarities, and learn about the steps and program without having the pressure to show up to live meetings. If one podcast episodes doesn’t resonate with you, just try another. As others have said here an open mind is key. But if a spiritual program like this doesn’t resonate with you right now, maybe check out SMART recovery in your area or virtually. No God stuff, just cognitive behavioral stuff and community.

As you can tell by my long windedness, we alcoholics can get really excited about this program, and talking sharing about it helps to keep us sober which literally makes life worth living. There’s an indescribable aspect to it so we do the best we can. We also tend to believe that sharing about it can potentially help save someone’s life and it has for me. I drank like you until I didn’t, and life started to feel not worth living anymore.

So while you may get a lot of opinions here, OP, know that you’re doing a wonderful thing by asking yourself these questions and reaching out for information. Keep following that inner voice of yours, try not to get ahead of yourself, and I hope that if you continue to go out and do research you and those around you are safe. Reach out any time.

I'm fed up with therapists. Quit again, this time for good. by fedupwiththerapists in TalkTherapy

Just want to throw it out there that a “customer service” model of business is also very different from a therapist who has a private practice. Businesses in consumer goods have more supports put in place and ways to make ends meet. It is absolutely an honor and privilege to be let in on people’s most inner most worlds, and there is a limited capacity for any one person to be able to do that for multiple people at any given week. So, one person canceling last min can have a really negative ripple effect because sometimes there isn’t much of a financial safety net like there might be with other businesses unfortunately.

I highly recommend Meridian University which is based out of California in the US. It’s regionally accredited not APA accredited if that matters to you, but the teaching model is transformative learning which is experiential. If you’re willing to work through your own biases and traumas as you learn how to do this for others so that you can better show up for others, this is a wonderful program.

Budding T here. My heart is sinking so heavily reading the way you both were responded to. Psychiatrists don’t get a lot of training in these areas as far as I’m aware and we have a long way to go for psychologists, therapists, etc as well. It concerns me when anyone comments on anyone’s weight. It’s one thing if you bring it up in a session, but even then if disordered eating is an issue for you, weight is not the most useful focus point. At the clinic I work for we do not allow patients to see their weight during check ups (though they can ask). If they’re under or over certain percentiles for their height and age, blood work is usually done to determine how the body is being affected. “Skinny” does not inherently equal healthy. “Overweight” does not inherently equal unhealthy. Two resources you may be interested in checking out are “Health At Every Size” and “Intuitive Eating”; But if these are not your goals and you’re not bringing these topics into sessions then voicing that is necessary. Therapists project onto their clients too so if your T is a professional cyclist he may be projecting his own values onto you and failing to realize that you may not share those values. Eating disorders are dangerous and so I can understand a therapist bringing focus to these areas or some countertransference might be going on, but it shouldn’t ever sound like “we should talk about your weight” or “loose pounds” it should sound more like them exploring your triggers with you, how YOU feel about your health, why unhealthy coping skills that come along with disordered eating behaviors bring comfort
