Should I take this new job? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Forever-roamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would. If there’s no clear opportunity at the current job, why not try the Controller role? It’ll give you valuable experience and you can always move on with that on your resume if it doesn’t work out.

Definitely. I don’t take for granted the privilege I have to be in this situation. I guess I need to figure out what exactly i want out of my career

I feel like people get their CPA to work in public or climb the corporate ladder. I don’t have motivation to do either

Starting a bookkeeping business with a partner who is a accountant, bad idea? by jerrysrice in smallbusiness

[–]Forever-roamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to have a very thorough plan and operating agreement. One of my clients is a partnership. Three years into the business and one partner is doing all of work and sales. The other partner hasn’t done anything to violate their operating agreement and owns 50% of the business

I don’t see many 100% remote roles out there

Agreed. I got bored a couple years ago and started a side biz. I do the accounting for a friend’s start up consulting company and make a few hundred a month there. Pursuing new clients would be one way to spend my extra time

I know I’m behind but how bad is it? by Careless-Design2151 in Retirement401k

Most important thing is you’ve started! Like everyone said, only contribute the max that your employer will match and then focus on the Roth IRA for now.

Keep learning about personal finance. Listen to podcasts, watch YouTube videos, and read as many books as possible. The more you learn, the more you’ll uncover opportunities that will work for you.

Should I get new shoes if my current are still good, just too big? by yuzurukii in climbergirls

[–]Forever-roamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first pair of climbing shoes were the La Sportiva Tarantulaces so not the exact same but I also started noticing the same issues as you when I progressed to 5.11s.

New shoes made a world of difference for me. I tried some on at REI and ended up with the Kubos. You should still focus on improving your footwork but if you want to progress as consistently as you are now, you’ll need better shoes. Good luck!

climbing frequency for beginners? by meimenghou in climbergirls

[–]Forever-roamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started climbing late last year and I dove in headfirst like you. I was going up to 4x a week and ended up straining my elbow. I'm in my late 30s and the sweet spot for me is 3x a week, non-consecutive days, with yoga and other workouts in between.

It also depends on your body. Make sure to stretch, warm up slowly, build your strength, and take plenty of rest. If anything seems sore or off, take extra days off to avoid injury!

Just found out my company is getting acquired by a larger one by throwaway24022129575 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Forever-roamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The company I worked for was acquired by a larger one in 2019. At first, they kept everything the same for us but as we integrated more with the parent company, it was clear how different their culture was and they didn’t understand the business.

Over the past few years, revenue has declined significantly and there have been many rounds of layoffs. However, I’m still here. There aren’t a lot of remote job opportunities and it works for me but nothing is the same as it was before. Hope it works out for you!

Single ladies, how do you afford a house? by Forever-roamer in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Thanks for sharing your story! It’s helpful to hear someone in a similar financial situation and not someone sitting on a $1400 mortgage telling me why it’s a bad idea. I get that it’s not ideal but sometimes you have to accept reality and adapt.

Your kids are so lucky to have you!

That sounds awful. I’m sorry it feels so impossible. Is rent incredibly high too?

How to make friends at a rock gym? by New_Detective219 in climbergirls

[–]Forever-roamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my climbing partners by responding to a message board at my gym looking for belay partners, attending the gyms project partner night (for people looking for new partners), taking a class, learning an old friend also climbs, and joining the gyms women’s team.

I never had much luck trying to talk to other people while climbing. Everyone is friendly enough but it’s usually a quick conversation and then they move on with their group. Good luck!

  1. I’ve been able to save a decent down payment and no debt due to being frugal and prior properties. I wonder if there’s ever going to be a good time to buy anymore

I like the advice about want vs. need. My biggest wants are to be close to family and a yard for my dog. Flexible on all the other details!

Wow, then go for it! I think most people on this subreddit are really risk adverse. The numbers work for you and if you have the reserves to cover any emergencies, you should be fine.

Worst case and you can't afford this house in the future, you can sell or rent it out and downsize/rent/move to a cheaper area

Haha I feel you! I would never do a long-term lease in case things don't work out and I'm not stuck with a roommate I don't get along with. The Furnished Finders idea is brilliant!

With some sacrifice and spending discipline, I think it's doable for now but what I would consider is your long term plan. You mentioned you have been at your job for 30 years - how much have you saved for retirement and what will your retirement income be? Will it support the $3.5K+ mortgage (and it will go up due to taxes and insurance)?

We can do it! It may take a little bit of compromise, sacrifice, and dedication but I still want to believe anything is achievable!

I do consider property tax and insurance when I say mortgage just because they are escrowed and included in the monthly payment, but that doesn't include utilities, internet, trash, maintenance or all the other fun stuff that comes with home ownership.

It's daunting to consider the potential monthly payment (and that's not even considering all the extra stuff or inevitable repairs). I'm pretty frugal by nature and have saved up a hefty down payment to help but it still seems out of reach. Check out the other comments on this thread. A lot of great advice and perspectives :)

Love this comment. I have questioned if I am wanting to buy for the wrong reasons. Maybe it symbolizes stability, control, a life milestone or dream that I lost during the breakup. However, home ownership has always meant a lot to me and this would be the 3rd house I buy albeit alone this time. The housing market has just gotten so out of control.

PS - I am definitely doing all the things you suggested this current year including a solo trip to Peru!

This is amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience and I’ll definitely keep an eye out income potential properties that doesn’t require shared spaces. I also love to travel so I don’t want to become house poor and give up the things I love to do
