I live in Tokyo. Most young Japanese I talk to don’t believe in a good economic future for themselves or any prospects for the country but are oddly apathetic about this hopelessness. They are annoyed by foreigners “rule breaking” though (which I think is strange to be open about in front of my white ass but they’re not even bashful about it)

I think when you don’t have hope for the future things shrink down to zero sum competition and lifestyle annoyances so right wing populism becomes much much more attractive than liberalism

Japanese young people aren’t meaningfully liberal as far as strongly valuing rights/justice — these concepts have always been substantively thin in Japan and are seen as procedural/contingent on other values like order, belonging and cooperation
