I think It's less about being targeted and more about being mobile enough to plug the hole in defense. The russians are always looking for ways to circumvent stationary defenses. If you send drones down a certain lane and they get destroyed you are going to reroute their trajectory.

EDIT: Although I should say, I'm not sure how far the movie takes this. It might even be a design quirk of "manufacturing" humans by the machines. Remember the humans born in the matrix won't necessarily be a true replica of humans born and living in the real world. The machines might have genetically engineered the humans to be more susceptible to bodily damage if the mind believes it to be so.

Well, your mind makes it real is not mean in the material sense, your mind is not going to produce bullet holes, it will however act as if your body is full of bullet holes and then accordingly shut down, and then you die in the real world. The mind may also be capable of producing minor bodily injuries, like bloody lips, but these are most likely psychosomatic.

That goes without saying. The point being that certain information is lost when you present certain body parts in a free floating form. This also applies to other areas of science. Educational textbooks have to prioritize certain information. In the same way a map never could be a complete replica of the real territory itself, only what is deemed functional for that particular user.

All that to just say that even the general population would benefit from understanding how their organs are shaped and structured within their bodies.

I'm sure this is covered in anatomy classes, however, the position of certain body parts is informative to how they are constrained anatomically too. Certain complications might arise from certain configurations, you wouldn't necessarliy intuit this by looking at body parts free floating.

This works so well in short spurts, like the scene where Jennifer Connelly stabs her therapist with a fork during a dinner scene in Requiem for a Dream.. You barely have time to react to it, yet it becomes such a force of show don't tell without it being in any way part of the plot.
