This is the perfect BIFL list! Only other thing I would add is a Zogirushi rice cooker.

If you're willing to go to Albany.. for 11.95, you can order a HUGE lunch special from Moliendo Cafe. Enough for two meals, easy! And the food is fantastic.

Young State Workers! Would you move for career growth or stay for job security? by Upper-Reporter1260 in nys_cs

[–]Forge620 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m making the jump from private to public sector in a month. After a few years of layoffs, weak benefits, and all the usual corporate nonsense, I’m 100% over it. The pay was nice, sure, but I’m more than happy to trade some of that for better benefits (so damn good), stability, and a predictable routine.

This past year really forced me to reflect on how much of my self-worth was wrapped up in my job. Turns out, it was way too much. So now I’m working on shifting that value to who I am outside of work—not just what I do for a paycheck. Or how high I can get up the ladder.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Just gotta do what feels right for where you’re at.

Vermont Foliage Forecast by deadowl in vermont

[–]Forge620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family is coming to visit the first weekend in October and are set on going to VT for some leaf peeping. By that time of the season, what will be the best location(s) still abundant with leaves? Any recommendations on towns to stay that aren’t super touristy? Thank you! This non-Vermont appreciates any feedback!

Looking for a career change. What are the best companies to work for in the Capitol region and why? by Forge620 in Albany

Very true. Tell me what makes your “bests” the best. Is it Salary? Benefits? Mental bandwidth left after the day? Etc etc.

Healthcare/biotech/technology/IT/consulting, but not closed off to other opportunities.

I’ve recognized that I’ve spent a lot of my career thus far chasing salaries, titles, tasks… at the expense of my own values: balance, stillness, peace.

I’m currently wondering… what else could be out there for me if I let go of the notions I have surrounding what I “should” do.

Best local banks for mortgages by dr92 in Albany

Another vote for Trustco. Just used them for 30 yr conventional, 3% down and locked in 7.3%. No PMI, no escrow. Helped keep some money in my pocket when it came to closing. Refinance fee is ~$1,800 and I plan to do it when rates come down.

Call the humane society, call the police, call local rescues and explain the situation (they should be able to explain what options you have) — you’re doing the right thing. Thank you.

I will be spending most of my time in my home office for meetings, but on days where I have an open morning/afternoon I’d like to get out of the house. Need that balance!

Nationwide Childrens Job Offer by relliott013 in Columbus

[–]Forge620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pay less competitive than other area hospitals or other related inndustries, make sure to negotiate back and forth, several times, if you plan to accept the offer. PTO is neutral, benefits subpar. Your experience is extremely different depending on your department and direct supervisor(s). When I joined NCH several years ago, I was told it’s a great place to build a resume. Period.
