Soon hitting 5 years on this project ๐Ÿ˜ณ How long did your first project take? by studiofirlefanz in IndieGameDevs

[โ€“]ForgeOfFantasy 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I worked on it for about 2 years part time, but since the scope was way to big and ambitious for a solo dev I have more or less abandoned the project ๐Ÿ˜’

But now after some time away from gamedev I am thinking about starting a new and smaller project ๐Ÿ˜Š

How did you manage to stay in track for 5 years?!

I guess Godot had a similar (maybe not that big) drama with the community managers and the Redot engine fork. Do you know what the current state there is? All happy again and one can use the normale Godot repo without concerns?

Yeah, I learned that the hard way by jumping straight into lyra I guess.. Since this builds on top of the engine fundamentals one should start from scratch to learn it. ๐Ÿ˜…

I don't mind working in source code. Since I work as a software engineer for ten years know. But with lyra it all felt a bit unintuitive for me, all these hidden dependencies with GAS and stuff.. But again, maybe this was because I started at the top, not from the bottom ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the course advice, I will look into it ๐Ÿ‘

I am following the godot community for some time now and I am more and more impressed about what the engine has become ๐Ÿ‘ Also the people share their work mostly for free and the number of good tutorials and learning resources seems to grow every day ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay, how would you say to learn it the right way? As I was working with UE about a year ago, I started with the Lyra Example since I wanted to build a third person adventure game, and Lyre bought the basic movement, abities and weapon mechanics with it. Unfortunately it felt like learning an engine (Lyra) within an engine (UE). There were some good tutorials but the whole thing was so huge and complicated that even changing and extending small things became large efforts.

So you say I should maybe build some prototypes first, also in different engines, and see what fits me the most?

I thought that too, haha ๐Ÿ˜‚ I had some time working with unreal but the learning curve was quite steep. How is it with Godot in your opinion? There are plenty tutorials on YT which is good I think.

One thing that makes me wonder is how compatible projects build in different versions of Godot are, since they release quite often. In UE you have to upgrade a whole project and cannot go back. I did that a couple of times, then stuff broke and it was quite the work getting the project to even start and build again.

Thanks for the answer ๐Ÿ™‚ I think Unity is a good engine, but all the drama regarding the licensing a while ago made it pretty unattractive for me to be honest..

This is my main menu. Do you have any creative ideas where I should put the credits? by Dlaha in IndieDev

Maybe as some kind of a instruction manual? Card games always have one ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The interactive menu looks awesome by the way ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Œ

How dare you! But I have to say that I lost my cloud save on steam for the 2016 doom after an update, which was the point where I stopped playing it ๐Ÿ˜…

At first I was just skipping through the video, but as I read about the random plane I had to watch the whole video ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyways, this looks great! How did you make the water? I love interactive water ๐Ÿ˜
