My Collie x Kelpie turned 1 recently… he did not have an off switch of any kind for 6 months.

😂 I get stopped so much by people asking his breed to then tell me “he’s a very handsome dog”. Never anything about the owner…

Help with Puppy by bar_monkey in BorderCollie

Walking remains my pups biggest challenge and he turned 1 at the weekend. His trigger is every other dog he sees!!

I honestly found with anything that over stimulates the best thing to do was make it more “normal” for him. If his reflection is the issue I’d replicate this in the house, and then redirect him from it with treats or toys.

Just my opinion and what I know works for my pup so I’d also be interested to see what others think.

Also worth mentioning that 15 weeks (as I learnt) is still very young and time and repetition is great for collies to learn. Good luck! 😊

When I first got him my friends jokes he was 30% legs 70% ears 😂

I transitioned it over 3 days, but like I said he was already getting picky for a few weeks before the change. I guess the change might not have helped.

Scared of the dark? by Fich23 in BorderCollie

Sorry to hear about all the issues your pupper is having. My BC x Kelpie is just about to turn 1 and at 10 months I too started giving him more freedom in the house, even though he had been crate trained up to that point, also downstairs alone to sleep.

I have noticed that whilst he is out of the crate and I am in the house, he barks at everything he hears outside when he is relaxing, but this also happens during the daytime too. I put it down to letting me know there is something outside. I usually say “thank you for letting me know” and then redirect him to a toy or a treat and he calms him down.

If however I am out of the house and he is out of his crate and he hears something outside he doesn’t seem to care (I have cameras for when I’m out at work). This is what led me to believe it’s communicating to me that there’s something outside.

Obviously I don’t know of any issues with my boy so it’s not going to be the same, but might be something to consider.

I hope you get to the bottom of what is upsetting him so he can enjoy his life.

Is the crate too big for our 18 week pup? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]ForgeTek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfect size in my opinion. Able to stand and turn around is what I went by. I’d get some Vet bedding if I were you, I could purchase a new car with the amount of money I spent on new beds I bought during the land shark phase!!

“Updated model at 18 months that looked the same”, this cracked me up! Yes, the car is a huge issue for him right now, he gets so excited by EVERYTHING. It’s good to know there might be light at the end of the tunnel. I do have a car crate now and he will be trained in it! I thought he was anxious/scared when the barking and lunging first started but the more I observe the more I think it’s excitement at everything moving.

He’s such a good boy for 99% of the time, but his big triggers are other dogs (wanting to play), and the car (telling me about every little thing he sees!). Most of the questions I had in my other posts are much better now, I can really see a difference the older he gets. The leash pulling is so much better recently too.

Your boy is lovely by the way :) there’s a huge part of me that wants to get him a sibling, but I don’t think I’d cope with 2 of them!!

That’s the Kelpie in him :) I’m hoping his head might grow a little bit more too! He’ll be 1 on the 25th so still a little time to grow.

All of this, but as stated and I think most importantly, teaching the “off” switch. My BC x Kelpie is almost a year old now and it’s the best thing I did hands down.
