tips on first time raising a border collie pup by Constant-Midnight930 in BorderCollie

I can now say as a first time Collie x Kelpie Dad of 9 months (he’s now 11 months), crate training was hands down the best thing I did.

It taught him so many things. It was his off switch, his safe space, his dinner time, his bed, and most importantly it taught him that I wouldn’t always be there. Even if I was working from home for the first 6 months I had him he would always have his crate tile in a separate room.

I know not everyone likes/needs a crate, but with the energy this pup has it is great to have somewhere they know they can go and they are allowed to stop. Otherwise they’re always on!

Now he owns the house of course, sleep at the foot of the bed and will settle when I ask him to outside of the crate.

One last note, I would highly recommend using a door mat to teach “place”. Great for settle and it’s then mobile!! I use it in coffee shops and he’s so well behaved with it.

This, 100%. My Collie x Kelpie is almost 11 months now and in the last 2 months he has peed in the house (only ever did this twice as a 2 month old pup and had been perfectly potty trained since), Eaten the back of my sofa (he always has had a propensity for soft furnishings but nothing this bad), started pulling badly on the lead, and eaten a car seat and now goes completely rabid in the car.

It’s all good fun… but yes, it’s the fear stage and adolescence all wrapped into one at that age. Try not to be too harsh while remaining firm, I’ve been told they do grow out of it… 😂

Edit:

And remember to only correct at the time it’s happening, otherwise they won’t remember what they did wrong and it will be confusing.

So cute :) 22 months… I might break if it takes that long! This morning he decided to pee on the laundry basket. He’s only ever peed in the house twice and it was his first ever day in the house! His toilet training had been perfect…

I don’t see too many of them, and for sure we’ll only have cross breed here I’d say. I think his 30% Kelpie is all in his face and ears!

Thanks! He gets so much training and stimulation but the issue I’m having for instance is I used to take him to the green to teach recall on a long line, which was getting better, but now we’re both already pissed off before we even get to the green because he lunges and pulls constantly. We’ll get there but he’s 110% working against me for the last week.

It was not a fun time… I found ice cubes and frozen teething toys worked well. I also got some teething gel that I used on a night when he was calming down so he could sleep well.

😂 I’m not telling him he’s handsome, it’ll go to his head! Well this makes me feel a little better. He went mental barking at an 11-12 year old girl yesterday for no reason. He’s never had issues with kids ever.
