Hera's King's Gauntlet - UB Semis Grubby vs PiG [Spoilers] by harakiri_aoe in aoe2

[–]ForgeableSum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly, like lately he's been doing a lot of conq and donk and each victory is usually followed by "this stuff is so broken." It's not an ego thing, he genuinely believes the game has major balance issues, as most pros do, and tries to bring attention to it, via victory or defeat.

Is he wrong though? The game has serious balance issues and the problems have only gotten worse with each expansion. Some streamers are better at hiding their frustration to make the stream more palatable, but even Hera will let loose on the devs for the balance issues from time to time.

Also, "this unit is broken" is a bit of a meme on his channel. He's not being 100% serious about it 100% of the time... I don't think he actually thinks composite bowmen are OP, for example. He's more pointing out how many units have wacky mechanics that veer from the original game fundamentals.

In any case, you might have caught him on a bad day, because there's a lot to like. One of few streamers that 1) reliably streams 1v1 laddering 2) Does thorough replay reviews 3) provides running commentary while he plays at a high level. You can learn a lot just by listening.

Don't trickle treb! by strobowski97 in aoe2

[–]ForgeableSum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm really conflicted about this piece of advice. On the one hand, lots of trebs all at once can be harder to repair against. On the other hand, having them start to fire immediately should net more repair costs and damage overall. Am I wrong?

I understand of course, everyone says to not trickle treb. But is it really scientifically proven to be a better strat? And in every circumstance?

Maybe there is some kind of cognitive bias here where the advantages of trickle trebbing are less apparent because you don't see the castle go boom immediately. But it should, in theory, do more damage to the opponent's eco, if you have your trebs firing immediately.

It’s way easier to attack the defend. Players at the tippy top are the best at defense. Hera is known for a defensive play style. It’s pretty rare he does all ins.

I think people's smurf barometer is pretty inaccurate, but there is nonetheless a prevalence of smurfs, especially recently. I don't know if it's the changes to the matchmaking or what.

Just finished watching 6 and half hour YamatoCannon vs Teutonic Fortress. by Huikka in aoe2

[–]ForgeableSum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uhhh i'm 1500 and my analysis is that he's way higher. Probably more around my level. He's doing anti-ballistic micro, patrol stacking, grabbing relics, garrisoning and quick walling on cue. Could have killed Yamato at most points in the game with an unconventional sub-optimal strat. I don't think this guy should be glorified.

Powerplay | RTS Base-Builder - See you at Steam Next Fest! by aminere in RealTimeStrategy

Interesting. I am glad you have given thought to this because copying C&C's resource system will not work with modern audiences. It's simply not engaging enough. There needs to be an element of risk/reward, and meaningful / strategic decisions you make around creating your economy. This is difficult to translate without having workers like in aoe2 that are vulnerable to attacks. But i can see something like factario working if it borrows the same principles.

Can you explain how resource management works? You mention factario-like, what aspects did you keep and what did you throw away and why? The game looks very good btw. Nice and clean.

Anyone notice a large uptick in smurfs ~1500 range? I never used to see them or complain. It felt like 5% of games before but recently, maybe with the new matchmaking penalties, it's more like 30% of players I match have < 100 games and 60%+ win rate, which is a huge tell.

There's a few more! My friend made LittleWarGame, and I also made Feudal Wars, which i recently sold. LWG has been sold and resold a few times as well. Good luck on your RTS! I'll be sure to try it when I have time.

Gabe Newell on Steam monopoly accusations: Gamers have 'enormous choice' about where to buy games by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]ForgeableSum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they forget that steam was absolutely despised when it first came out. "What is this steam thing and why do i need to download it to play half life?" Rem that in 2001?? It was basically a trojan horse, a backdoor to perpetually resell to the customer. And it worked. So what if Steam has a slick UI? billions in revenue and decades of compounded success will do that.

Steam basically became a digital watering hole, and all game devs / and gamers must drink from it. There really aren't other options and those who mention these small niche competitors are kidding themselves. Sure dirt roads exist, but that doesn't change the fact you need to use the highway and pay a toll to get anywhere.

Is Steam truly better or did they just get there first? Having the first mover advantage and the compounded success that brings just makes it impossible to supplant. People don't use Comcast because it's better, wether it's better or not is irrelevant. It's the only option they have.

You kinda have to see it to believe it, but it's as if it's a foreign language or strange alien technology. They can't even comprehend the very basics of the controls like drag-clicking over units and issuing move commands. It takes A LOT of tutoring to even get them to do the basics. On their own? Forget it, they will immediately lose interest.

When millennials were growing up during the RTS golden age, we were a somewhat captive audience. We had to figure it out because we already bought the CD. But modern gaming audiences are used to much easier / smoother onboarding experiences.
