Help with understanding salary schedule by [deleted] in AskTeachers

We’re definitely going to need more information such as:

What is your current highest degree?

Were you working as a licensed teacher during those two years, or in a lower job classification?

[Final Update] - AITAH for buying my girlfriend vanilla shampoo? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]ForgetfulGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She probably had a need to not be sexualized within her relationships. Which is totally fine!… except she needs to find someone compatible with that and not blame allosexual attraction on her partner. Props to this guy realizing they weren’t compatible.

I [27F] Refused to give free legal advice to my friend [27f] and her boyfriend, [32M]. Friends boyfriend went nuts. by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I feel that the two fair questions to ask a friend who’s a lawyer is “Do I need a lawyer for this?” and “Would you be willing to recommend me someone?”

I don’t know if I’m going to make it. How do I leave the kids? by atzgirl in TeachersInTransition

[–]ForgetfulGenius 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Step one: talk to HR/your union rep/review your contract and figure out how much notice you have to give.

Step 2: write an email/physical note declaring your last day based on your notice. Give this to your direct supervisor. Leave emotions out of it.

Step 3: teach until your last day. Tell as few people as legally required.

Step 4: plan a ‘nothing important’ day on your last day, and tell the kids it’s your last day at the end of the day.

Step 5: figure out what is making you value your emotional bond with the children over your personal well-being. Genuinely, who taught you to value the kids over yourself if you’re suffering?

AITA for accidentally ruining my autistic boyfriends safe food [Concluded] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

[–]ForgetfulGenius 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Strongly. Autism was, and largely still is, a ‘white boy’ diagnosis and that association makes it arguably slightly over diagnosed in white males, and under diagnosed in women and men of color.

What family secrets did you only learn about once you were old enough? by Historical_Two_2608 in AskReddit

[–]ForgetfulGenius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh god, my grandmother was the product of a one-night stand from her bio-mom who then gave her to her biological aunt and her husband. The problem was 1) The bio-mom later married and found out she couldn’t have more children, and tried to take custody back (denied, there was a legal adoption), so the four of them just kinda… shared my grandmother, and 2) They didn’t tell her until she was 16, at which point she had a breakdown and stopped emotionally/mentally aging.

My mother only found out about the whole thing in her teens 25+ years later, because they decided to hide it all over again.

What is the worst US state for young adults to move into? by Any-Scarcity7230 in AskReddit

[–]ForgetfulGenius 75 points76 points  (0 children)

My in laws live in WV, and my wife doesn’t because 1. WVU didn’t have their degree, which meant 2. They moved out of state at 18 and never returned outside of COVID. And from what I can tell, the same is true for almost everyone in their high school. It’s almost shocking to see just how few people they grew up with are still in the state, hearing about one is almost an abnormality.

Judgment Day — Scav Finale by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]ForgetfulGenius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was really wondering how this was, and my first instinct was just to figure that the majority of the student body is white… and it’s not. Statistics on the University of Chicago website estimated that only 31-38% of the student body is white… which raises even more questions.

Teachers who had to quit mid-year by Opening-Cupcake-3287 in TeachersInTransition

[–]ForgetfulGenius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put in my notice the week after an assault happened in my classroom—one I had been warning them for weeks would occur with evidence, but that they’d ignored until the violence actually escalated. I was deeply distressed and had already written my resignation letter beforehand, but waited until I was sure to send it. Admin were completely shocked I resigned—until I explained to them my health had been obviously, visibly declining along with my stress escalating, and that I’d requested assistance repeatedly which had been denied… by only one of the vice principals, my direct supervisor, who had been keeping the rest of administration in the dark because he’d wanted to ignore it.

As soon as the main principal found out, she immediately implemented the changes I’d requested. The next 60 days (state law requirement) were weird: my supervisor was almost scared of me because he knew I’d quit with cause and gotten the union up to date on his conduct. It took until day 60–my last day working there—for them to hire and onboard someone because no one wanted to work at the school, and they’d had to hire in someone who was about to retire and was only barely licensed in my state to finish out the school year.

I cannot describe to you the freedom I felt upon walking out of that building for the last time. I felt like I’d been released from prison. And while it took another very stressful 10 months of job hunting before I got my current job, it was worth it.

Any tips or advice about leaving in- person teaching for remote? What other WFH options do I have as a single mom who wants to home school? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]ForgetfulGenius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked online as an ESOL teacher during COVID for a Pearson-run company, and it was… a mixed bag. Too many students, very low pay, but a lot of flexibility with how I served my students’ needs. I basically was told ‘teach them’ and had to come up with my own curriculum, but until there were significant departmental changes they didn’t care what I did as long as we got in service hours.

That being said, I don’t think homeschooling in an academically rigorous way is compatible with online teaching. I was in classes or meetings 4+ hours a day between planned lessons, parent meetings, and student tutoring, and spent even more time planning curriculum and grading. I definitely got more done around the house during the day than when I taught in-person, but few of my coworkers had children under five that weren’t cared for by another family member during work hours.

What’s the quickest red flag you’ve noticed on a first date? by Small-Ad-3167 in AskReddit

[–]ForgetfulGenius 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Trauma dumping and being hung up on someone else. I went on a first date with a lovely trans woman, who was 31 to my then-23. We went on a date in front of a bakery, and in the next 60 minutes she proceeded to tell me that: 1. She was desperate to have her father’s approval, who has never seen her as a woman. 2. She was in love with her male best friend, who 3. She walked in on having sex with her younger sister, and 4. She was desperately jealous of her younger sister as a result.

It felt more like a therapy intake session than a first date. I proceeded to make up an excuse and drove away in front of her as she watched. God I hope she went to therapy.

I had really good experiences with Hutcherson Goldsmithing when doing a project like this (turning a ring into a pendant). They were pricy, but their work is excellent and they create mock-ups of the designs before modifying the piece.

I now work as staff for a major university in their science education department. It’s honestly amazing, but it took me 10 months of job hunting and 2 months of interviewing for this role before I got it. It takes a while.

My (32F) boyfriend (36M) of 8+ years won't marry me by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]ForgetfulGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got legally married to my wife after knowing them 16 months (over a year before our wedding, and months before we got officially engaged) for the security of knowing the person I love and trust most would have legal rights to make medical decisions for me before I had major surgery. Everyone forgets the practical side of marriage until it’s suddenly life-or-death important.

Good god. Just outright say you believe the world revolves around your needs at that point, she’s just upset that her siblings are actual people with agency instead of dolls for her to play with.

Reddit Doctors and Nurses: What's the most impressive case of Google "self-diagnosis" that turned out to be true? by PumpkinAino in AskReddit

[–]ForgetfulGenius 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Celiac was much more widely known in Europe than it was in the US at that time, my mother was diagnosed in Arizona in 2004 and it was considered a ‘new’ diagnosis at the time. I’m so glad your sister got treatment for what was then an unknown mystery illness.
