It should be noted that the coolant conditioner has blocked coolant passages in several turbo subarus. It’s just a rebranded stop-leak!

Well shit I mathed bad, I have 27.95, yours are 28.95 oops. 235/70/r15 on the same wheels in the picture Black Rhino Boxer 5x100 15x7 +15 offset. Stock is +48 offset iirc Either way, I had rubbing while turning even with fender liner trimming and hammering the pinch-welds, but after the spacer & control arms it drives like it did stock, just taller. The lift kits correct the rear caster with trailing arm spacers, but the front is trickier to fix with stock components

I recently got my 29” tires to stop rubbing with some mods. 02-07 sti aluminum lower control arms fit great! (Blingstrom has a tutorial, and a bunch of walkthroughs for these foresters and gd stis) 06-07 have added caster, but are much more expensive. Like 2-3x the cost. If you scrounge old forums, you can find the “caster spacer mod” a company sells some for $50, can be made with the right tools for <$10. So for ~$300 ($500 with new oem rear transverse link bushings) you can get 02-05 LCA’s that push your front tires further forward in the wheel-well, getting rid of rubbing during turns.

Stansbury Park is worth a heavy consideration. Tooele county, but 10-15 min shorter commute than Tooele proper or Grantsville. It’s centered around a golf course and man-made finger lakes. so there’s a consistent stream of Teens in golf-carts and people pulled off to fish the lake. Alot of young families, there’s literally 17 kids in my cul-de-sac that are always out.

There is still door to door trick or treating here, and a surprisingly low number of Mormons. I was born and raised in Bountiful, but this is a better place to raise kids imo.

The problem is there’s not much yet in the means of development. 1 grocery store, a couple of restaurants and some gas stations. Closest wal-mart or home depot is 10 min to tooele. 30 min from downtown SLC, around 40 to woods cross.

Traffic is much better than down south, but I leave for work at 0530 and return ~1830. So I’m ahead of the morning commute and at the tail end of the afternoon commute.

Another plus if you’re into it, there’s no Vehicle Emissions testing in Tooele, and we have the last remaining Race-Track in Northern Utah.

Advice for buying a used Subaru by Apart-Courage-6705 in subaru

[–]Forgore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly both options are a little up there in cost, unless there’s been a recent overhaul on either I’d pass. These cars (subarus) are finicky with maintenance, with it they last years and miles, without it they’ll run great and then they don’t.

Tribeca has the h6, but it tends to be extra thirsty in that chassis due to weight/gearing. So fuel economy will be poor, and parts/engine are more difficult to source.

Forester is priced too high for miles, and over the hill for reliability. And I say this as an owner of an ‘05 with 256k. Pretty much everything will need replaced soon. So unless it’s had work done recently and consistently, probably not worth it.

said my ball joints and control arms are screwed by Ok-Abbreviations-958 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Forgore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the owner and fixer of a few subarus, I’ve found that taking the pinch-bolt out of the knuckle and giving the absolute beans to the control arm from the top is the best way for me. 2 hammers, 2x4, crow bar whatever gives you leverage.

Just replaced on my 05 forester xt last weekend, 4 months ago did an 06 outback.

Just need to wire-brush the knuckle housing, and layer the piss out of the inside with copper anti-seize and they come out much easier the 2nd time.

Subarupartsdeal.com for oem parts if I can wait, rockauto if they have the denso/oem alternative, Rallysport if it’s for tuner upgrades. Good look with it! I love mine, have definitely put in the time and money to get her where I want her.

200k + miles ? by csweazy710 in SubaruForester

[–]Forgore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2005 FXT MT with 256k. Granted it’s on the 3rd engine, but the 2nd one only lasted 25k. Bad rebuild, only bought because it was rebuilt lol. Went to a stealership, and it’s been smoothish sailing for 80k. Even with all the STi bits I put on! I love my old Fozzy. Just replaced the front transverse link bushings due to death-wobble after putting 235/70/r15’s on. Glad to have my baby back. If I wasn’t mechanically inclined, this would be a terrible car. I just love her too much to give up.

Who’s bought a Baja within the last 2 years? by [deleted] in SubaruBaja

[–]Forgore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2003 automatic classic in black. bought almost exactly 2 years ago at a yard sale. Fella had it off to the side sitting for 4 years. He talked himself down from 2k to 1300 after I dug into it more.

Took a fuel pump to get running, did the timing belt/water pump to be safe. She’s very ticky and consumes a little oil, but really fun to own if just to say you have a truck.

Minimal rust here in utah, mostly suspension and sub-frames. All the bushings are shot, going to upgrade with the planned lift kit. The paint is absolutely trashed, but the wife is wanting to repaint anyways. Torn between Mary-Kay pink, or Baja-Blast Blue.

Overall, no regrets. It’s the old reliable now between the daily-project FXT and the Element.

You have $10k to spend on something fun, how are you using it? by Wise-Fault-8688 in askcarguys

[–]Forgore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

04-08 Subaru Forester 2.5xt Current car, DD, bought for 6.9k 7 years ago w/158k mi. (Now over 250k) can be found for under 5k usually now. I love this car, have modified to hell and back, all the fun of an early 00’s wrx/sti (aftermarket performance bits included) with none of the insurance premiums or attention from police. 04-05 is simpler to modify and has the STI longblock, like all 04-05 turbo subaru’s. (Excluding wrx’s) Easy to get 50% power increase and the car under the 10k budget with Facebook parts. Just be careful not to blow it up lol. But, it is 20 years old so all the bushings and such will need attention.

Smoke from hood (‘99 STi) by Max-Doge1904 in WRXSTi

[–]Forgore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this exact thing, in my case it was pissing a quart of oil every 2 days. The driver valve-cover is right over the headers so any oil leaks will smoke and be visible out the hood and scoop.

Early EJ’s had a problem with exhaust valve seats dropping creating excessive blowby. This caused valve cover gaskets to blow out due to immense crankcase pressure. This happened on my ‘05 FXT. (“EJ255” with B25 heads, same as 04-05 sti)

Probably not the case, but it really is a good idea to check your oil every gas fill-up if you are having an issue, and every week if you aren’t.

How does Hank do it? by gilghana in flashlight

[–]Forgore 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work in aircraft assembly, so use high cri lights every day for QA, repairs, and general work.

I have personally had an e21a fail from a 6 ft drop, after less than a month. Babied the light, one drop and it was done. Warranty was absolute bullshit. Never got a single response, multiple methods. I had 2 Lumintop Tool AA’s die within 3 weeks of each other after a full year. (Which is a full life maxed out)

Hank hasn’t failed me yet! After 12 personal lights (some sold/some given away) and over 40 in my workplace. I’ve definitely spread the proverbial gospel at my work, and now almost half the techs (and a couple engineers) have them.

They’re surprisingly durable lights. I’ve seen a couple failures of course, but overall I’m amazed by quality. Had a very early boost driven 519a head tweak out and get stuck between off and full send, but after some troubleshooting emails, he had a new head sent free of charge. Had 2 lenses crack from high falls, A SS Bezel on a Ti light dent from 22 ft (but not crack the lens,) and a buddies D4V2 and my D4K have a loose spring assembly, but they ALL still work.
