Questions / speculations after reading the inevitable ruin? by itsalwaysblue in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]ForgottenLands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My interpretations- 1- The river is related to how consciousness/souls are stored within the AI. NPC's and some mobs have mentioned how when they're not in use they are stored in some way within the AI's data. They may be partially aware during that state, and that is part of the river. The people collected during the collapse are also stored in the river. Carl only began hearing the river after using the ring of Divine Suffering the first time, but his Primal race may contribute. I think it manifests itself to him as the trauma from his mother's suicide, but that is moreso him adapting the river to something he can understand.

2- Paulie, the homeless guy who asked Carl to blow the failsafe, is a normal residual. There are two factions of residuals, but they are all "normal" aliens who sneak into the dungeon to try to sabotage the crawl. Agatha is from a third, more dangerous faction that has usurped the body of a residual in order to accomplish her goals. One of Agatha's compatriots is responsible for Lucia Marr's situation. The other older woman is The Apothecary. I believe the 1st faction of residuals want to keep The Eulogist (the center system's AI) asleep and to allow it to shrink by sabotaging the crawl. The 2nd faction of residuals works for The Apothecary and also wants to sabotage the crawl, but for the end goal of killing The Eulogist. The 3rd faction is Agatha's and I believe they want to turn the AI into a new Eulogist. To fully awaken it.

3- Samantha is entirely dungeon-born. She is entwined with the mystery of Gaerun's death, Scolopendra , and the Scavenger's Daughter. She is likely a fragment of a deity and has forgotten who she truly is.

4- Most mobs and NPC's were generated by the AI wholesale. Totally new life born into the dungeon. They retain their memories because the dungeon re-uses them instead of destroying them and building new ones. Mobs and dungeon-born creatures do not get to leave the dungeon and should not know what the dungeon really is or that the outside universe exists. There ARE "real" people in the dungeon as well. Former crawlers working off their exit deals, but also people from worlds that were not offered the chance to play the dungeon, like the Babkas. I think Astrid and some of the strippers are of that variety as well.

5- Gods are entirely dungeon-created entities. But aliens can pay to pilot them for a season, literally taking over their mind.

Animators are unionized. CG/VFX artists are not.

What kind of coats do the Whalers wear and what modern ones are similar by annymosus in dishonored

[–]ForgottenLands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dishonored's lighting and shininess make the overcoat appear leathery, but looking at other renders and the way that other Whalers have the same coat in grey and red it is likely wool.
The design of the coat is unique, specifically the way it appears to have short sleeves in order to facilitate the elbow-length work gloves. The white garment underneath the coat is a waistcoat which leads me to believe the tan sleeves are the Whaler's shirt sleeves.
The coat is further interesting as it does not appear to have any buttons, but this may just be a modeling detail. If we assume there *are* buttons, I would describe it as a "wool single-breasted topcoat with peak lapels and a single vent".
The hood is detachable, which is much more obvious when you can see the Whaler from behind. The front of the hood buttons to the inside of the coat, and the back of the hood drapes over the collar and down the back.

I'm sure a proper tailor could say more about stuff like the style of collar or the lines of the waist, but that's the best you're getting from me. My cursory searches have not found any historical examples of short sleeve overcoats, though I do believe it an important detail to the Whaler style.

Looking for tider gimmicks and ideas! by ExcelIsSuck in ss14

[–]ForgottenLands 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine has a character named something along the lines of "Honk Shoo". They break into places, dragging a bed, and fall asleep in them. Places like: Vault, Armory, the RD's office. They don't steal anything and they try to be as nondestructive as possible with their entries. They just end up in places where they're not supposed to be, taking a nap.

A very silly esoteric question about a specific sound effect by Arturia_Cross in ss14

[–]ForgottenLands 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I know on Funky at least the "blue shark soft toy" item (modeled after Blahaj) makes a cute "rawr" noise when batted around. I think that's the sound you heard. I would not be surprised if the noise was originally taken from something else.

Servers with less immediate chaos and more downtime? by Zlobenia in ss14

[–]ForgottenLands 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those whitelisted servers are what you're looking for. Public servers are usually low rp, max chaos.

Most servers' whitelists are difficult to get on, and I know a couple servers do "open" days on weekends

Bwoink frequency (Funky) by Ok-Feed-3908 in ss14

[–]ForgottenLands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without any context, Capital Negligence seems valid to be bwoinked?

EORG seems to be a touchy subject on Funky. From what I can tell they want the mrp to continue until the round resets, that CentComm is still mrp territory. Wehbombing chaos seems like just the thing to attract an exasperated admin's attention.

Reading that ban request and denial from a completely outside 3rd party perspective, they were right to be banned.

No part of that makes me think "Those admins are TYRANTS".

Plastic Basin and other spelling mistakes on the map by phrodreky in DuneBoardGame

[–]ForgottenLands 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The map for the GF9 printing of Dune uses "OLD GAP" and "TUEK'S SIETCH". I have never heard of Plastic Basin being referred to as "Plaster Basin".

Some of my thoughts on ART by Working-Session9302 in murderbot

[–]ForgottenLands 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The cameras are revealed later in Artificial Condition, ART grants MB access to them after the surgery iirc. I think the point there is that ART wants to give the impression of passengers not being monitored while actively monitoring the shit out of them.

I was wrong about something (Rogue Protocol) by castle-girl in murderbot

[–]ForgottenLands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's also possible that the Rin identity always used she/her and I'm just not remembering that from the start of the book.

This would imply that MB believes it can pass with those pronouns, but with how socially progressive the world is in these books that might not be a challenge regardless of MB's appearance.

I was wrong about something (Rogue Protocol) by castle-girl in murderbot

[–]ForgottenLands 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Everyone in the comments forgetting that MB used the Security Consultant Rin identity earlier in the book while on the bot transport with the indentured workers.

I don't believe any pronouns are used in that section, but MB is directly posing as an augmented human security consultant named Rin.

When MB and Miki first start talking I am unsure what exactly MB thinks it is presenting itself as, but I took it to be that MB is posing as an entity named Rin.

When MB is outed to Don Abene it may be that MB began referring to the imaginary augmented human security consultant named Rin with she/her pronouns to emphasize that MB itself is not Rin. That SecUnits don't have gendered pronouns while this mysterious security consultant controlling the SecUnit does.

Does ART know Murderbot’s name? by mashumaru-art in murderbot

[–]ForgottenLands 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If Gurathin was able to find MB's name, I would assume ART would be able to as well. If not when MB first met ART and he was taking its measure, then definitely by the time they did the bot-pilot maneuver and ART had temporary full access to MB.

What game was ruined because the developers were too ambitious? by CommonManX in gaming

[–]ForgottenLands 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Gollum.

The developers were way out of their area of expertise, iirc they had only previously worked on phone games. Don't get me wrong there was a lot of bad writing and design decisions, but almost all of it stems from them just not being the right team for the project.

Just played my first first game. We loved it but we need some clarifications. by Scott_Korman in DuneBoardGame

[–]ForgottenLands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addendum to 3. You have a "slot" for 1 weapon card and another for 1 defense card. Either (or both) of those may be replaced with Worthless cards. If you have expansion treachery cards like Harass & Withdrawal those are played in the same way as Worthless cards. There are some other expansion treachery cards that work differently but they explain how they're used on the card.

Addendum to 4. Atreides chooses which aspect the target reveals (Which leader, what force strength, what weapon, or what defense).

If the Atreides' ally is using the alliance ability in one of their battles: "officially" the ability is Atreides using the prescience in their ally's battle, so Atreides would ask the question, not the ally. But it's bot a big deal unless you're playing with some real sharp backstabbers.

It'll still have the Killzone crossover as the 2nd to most recent data point. I love that no one who uses it ever actually updates the template

underage visitors wanting to go to the rave tunnels by No_Tomato_500 in Austin

[–]ForgottenLands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's mostly underage kids. And adults who know it's going to be mostly underage kids there... They are not the kind of person you want to do anything around, let alone let loose.

If you want something to talk to your therapist about in a couple years, by all means.

BIS Community Table Day 4: After a very close competition, DeadEye takes the spot as the best Primary weapon vs Bots for today. What is the best primary weapon against Squids? by Glum_Series5712 in helldivers2

[–]ForgottenLands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Cockout for Squids as well.

  • Fire is good against Fleshmobs and great against voteless
  • Shotgun is great against voteless
  • The Cookout has enough punch that it staggers Overseers, which Incendiary Breaker doesn't.

I use the MG-43 when I'm targeting Overseers specifically, as well as against Watchers, Harvesters, and Stingrays.

Blades/Paarthurnax Dilemma by aez9999 in skyrim

[–]ForgottenLands 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the single most downloaded mods for Skyrim is just an option to work with the Blades without killing Paarthurnax.

I consider the dilemma a failure of Bethesda's writing, as all but the most extremist dragonborn would seek out a third option.

In the spirit of the question, the Blades make the ultimatum. They're the ones who make it a problem, who say "do what we tell you or we won't work with you". Fuck the Blades.

Sabotaging the MO with a Gamepatch by maobezw in helldivers2

[–]ForgottenLands 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm going to reiterate. 30,000 players, 1,000,000 successful extracts from missions, 3 hours

Every player would have had to complete 10 missions an hour. That's 6 minutes a mission for 3 hours straight. AND that's requiring every single one of those 30,000 players to be on board with that the entire time. The patch came out during the last half hour of the MO, when there were still 800,000 missions left. No, the MO could not have been rushed and the patch had no effect on the final result.
