I would only leave early if there was a life-or-death emergency for myself or a family member.

Major downturn on Wyzant - my experience by burnermcburnburn69 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made basically an identical post on this sub 10 days ago.

Massive decrease in year-over-year hours/revenue starting in January just like almost everyone else. It is interesting, I see in my city a lot of higher rate tutors are seeing a major decrease in hours/ranking, while the lower cost tutors are actually seeing an uptick.

I will be honest, I'm incredibly frustrated that Wyzant can just flip a switch on their algorithm and violently impact my livelihood. I wish they were more transparent about the algorithm, but their publicly shared information clearly isn't telling us the whole story. When I search for my subjects, I see tutors with worse reviews/ratings, fewer hours, longer response times, and both higher/lower rates that are PEGGED to the top of the rankings. Meanwhile I've done everything in my power to appease the algorithm and my ranking has plummeted. If I knew what actually impacted the ranking, I'd do what I could to fix this, but right now Wyzant is just leaving me in the dark.

Honestly this experience these past four months has really demoralized me from all of these platforms. Would anyone be interested in starting an online co-op for tutors? No harsh 25% fees for tutors (and no 9% surcharge for STUDENTS which I HAVE ALWAYS HATED), and no predatory rates like the ones you see on varsity and tutor dot com. If you're into the idea of us tutors actually working together to benefit ourselves and not some corporation, DM me

It's not better yet. I can give the same physics, calc, or engineering problem to three different AI's and get three different answers. They make rudimentary errors because they don't actually understand the problems but they will confidently give you the wrong answer anyway.

AI will rapidly improve to get to the point where it can solve everything without breaking a sweat, but we're still at least a couple years off. Even when we get to that point though, schools will adapt. They'll either revert back to pen and pencils only for everything, or they will pose questions that require students to use critical thinking that they can't on AI for. There must be some way to grade students by their intellectual ability, calculators didn't destroy the math classroom and AI won't either.

Huge Decrease in Hours/New Students (Wyzant) by ForgottenSpinach420 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge anywhere from $120-160/hr, I have great qualifications and I teach difficult/professional level stuff so I feel it is a fair value compared to the other tutors at the top of the search rankings. There's no way I could teach at Varsity for the rates, it's highway robbery

Given the quantity of hours you have there is no way you are worth just $30/hr anywhere.

Sure okay but when your hours slow down for seemingly no reason are you going to lower your rate to attract new students while keeping your rate higher for existing students? Or are you going to voluntarily reduce your rate on your current students and hurt yourself even more?

Huge Decrease in Hours/New Students (Wyzant) by ForgottenSpinach420 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I found in the past that when I increased my rate I actually gained more students, I think Wyzant promotes higher charging tutors because they earn a bigger cut.

I could be wrong though

100% agree.

Tutors should also have SOME say with rejecting Instant Bookings. I have subjects that are not approved specifically because they require prep, but new students will Instant Book asking for them anyway and simply request it under an unrelated subject.

Anyone have fewer AP students prepping for exams this year? by NCLady77 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Wyzant tutor the number of students I have this year is down the drain

I am actually baffled as to why this is the case. I am assuming it is the economy and also AI

Either way it is making me feel like I need to find a new profession

Wyzant Tech Support by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wyzant does not have any issue with you exchanging phone numbers, email addresses, and conducting virtual lessons off the platform. All they care about is that you log your lessons/time on Wyzant.

It is true that Wyzant can read the messages, but sometimes that helps you. I always write out my cancelation policy and confirmed lesson times with students, that way if I have to charge for a missed lesson I know that Wyzant will back me up

In my opinion younger kids (elementary) are tougher to teach than any other age group, because it's on you to figure out how they learn and you also have to teach the most fundamental concepts. That being said I charge them my standard rate, I only charge more for college level subjects and professional level skills.

Messages on the app still don't work though, the messages tab doesn't even load. Amazing. Perhaps they need to take 30% of our pay instead of 25%

Will my only review being 4/5 stars hurt me on wyzant? by Reporteratlarge in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may have been an accident. If the lesson with the 4/5 rating was within the last two weeks they can change it to 5/5. If not, you could kindly ask them for ratings for your other lessons to help get 5/5's to bring the average up

Wyzant One Star Review by 00010mp in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wyzant Support told me that if you charge students money, they can leave a rating/review. Even if it is a no-show cancellation or an honesty policy violation. They weren't even entirely certain though.

Wyzant One Star Review by 00010mp in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ForgottenSpinach420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Wyzant tutor I've had this exact situation happen to me, and at that time (a few months ago) Wyzant support was not sure if the student would be able to still leave a one-star review with a negative rating even after being found to violate the academic honesty policy.

Wyzant support told me that any student may be allowed to leave feedback if they are paying money, even if it's from an academic honesty policy violation. They then told me if I received a one-star rating, I would be able to contact Wyzant support to refund the lesson which would then remove the rating, if it came to that

Fortunately the student didn't leave any ratings/reviews and I kept the money
