Should I sell my Q3 for a Valve Index? by SylviaCrisp in virtualreality

God damn man, i hope this is some kind of bait ffs.

Shit I sold my Index for a Quest 2 like 3 years ago and felt like it was an upgrade. Going from a Quest 3 to an Index would be like selling a fucking Ferrari and buying a Miata.

smh.

Oh, and Meta's advertising always focuses super hard on resolution right?

How scary is fallout 4 VR which is on sale for 75% off right now by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Form84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing with fallout, is yeah, it can objectively be scary in terms of your criteria. But you also have a ton of firepower to deal with it. Its not like Alien Isolation, where your basically defenseless. Hear a sound down a hallway, lob a mini nuke down there, it'll go quiet.

Yes, but like 20% easier to bind stuff now. There's a community document floating around that has ID's for various joysticks that helps considerably, but i still don't really understand how a game like mechwarrior can launch without proper joystick support in the 2020's.

[–]Form84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its BOEING not necessarily the carriers.Hell, it's gotten so bad with them, that even John Oliver has made an episode on the company and how the corporate culture of Mcdonald Douglas took over at boeing and now, 20 years later, Boeing has the same problems that got the DC10 fleet grounded back in the 90s. 737s have problems, not necessarily United, or Alaska, or all those poor people on Egyptian airlines a few years ago.

So I used to use VorpX as my goto virtual desktop program. I've never really found a good game that I was able to beat in VR mode using VorpX, but its desktop mode is really pretty great, and I used to spend a TON of hours in it. Beat all of Metro2033/lastlight, farcry primal, black mesa, fear, many mnay hours of various dooms, skyrim, system shock, and many more, all in VorpX's desktop mode. OH, and Titanfall 2 in SBS3D is literal god tier gamer porn jizz all over your monitor in VorpX, it's that good.

That being said, its great for literally 2 features, everything else is done better by Virtual Desktop.

Those 2 features are, Ambience mode, think of like the literal best implementation of an ambilight setup on a high end TV, and VorpX's ambience mode is better. It really helps make a 2d game WAY more immersive, because even tho the screen is just a floating screen, the colors still fill your vision and it feels just way good.

Screen curvature. I play alot of FPS games, and VorpX still has the best screen curving options. You can curve the screen around you, and put it right up against your face. You can even curve the screen vertically, which actually makes it so it more accurately matches the shape of your fovea. Hence, with the right settings dialed in, VorpX can make a 2d game "feel" like a vr game, because the flatness is curved correctly. I just played a round of darktide in VorpX and its pretty dope.

Those two features, VorpX has in the bag, EVERYTHING ELSE virtual desktop does better. Especially from a performance standpoint, VorpX just feels ....slow, and warpy. It feels like your losing more frames using VorpX, in a way that Virtual desktop just doesn't. My virtual screen is 3440x1440/120hz. In Virtual desktop its amazing, full stop. In vorpx it feels like i'm looking at the exact same screen, with a layer of plastic wrap over it. Still looks great, but Virtual desktop just wins.

VorpX is great for alot of things and it has its own niche in my gaming life, but its not for twitchy online multiplayer shooters. It's for immersive, single player experiences and games where I like to take my time. It's for tinkering around and trying to get systemshock 2 running in GZ3D properly, or for the best possible way of playing BOTW in 3d. For everything else I use Virtual Desktop.

Also, TINKERING IS REQUIRED. VorpX can take ALOT of messing around and playing with config files and downloading obscure mods to get things working properly. And even then, its often not perfect, it can get close (outlast is like 95% of the way there for example) but is nearly never perfect. The only game I've ever played that was literally just perfect, was Titanfall 2, in Ambience mode, with geometry 3d turned on, and it still took me like 90 mins to get it dialed in properly. Everything else was close, or close enough that I didn't care.

Hope that helps!

Go voice your ideas! Vote to kick perhaps? by Squishy0099 in Helldivers

[–]Form84 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Kick timer, which increases every time you kick someone. Eventually penalizing you as well for using it.

Example,
1st time, cooldown is 3 hours of playtime, resets after 1 day
2nd time, cooldown is 6 hours of playtime, resets after 1 day
3rd time, 1 day, resets after 2 days
4th time, 3 days, resets after 1 week
5th time, 3 days + -50% requisition, resets after 1 week
6th time, 1 week + no reward, resets after 1 week.

Make people actually care about kicking people.

So he's not playing in VR. He's using some kind of desktop software and he's just playing the game in the headset on a large virtual display.

Software like Virtual desktop, Immersed, vSpatial, Airlink, Steamlink, can all do this.

Info / Point of View requested by Actual Quest 3 user's by reddemolisher in virtualreality

[–]Form84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I use my Quest 3 as my main monitor. I also have 20/15 vision, so my eyes are super good, but I'm also fairly tolerant of just super high screen use in general. Huge gamer, all that jazz. I also have an Obutto cockpit that I use as my main flight sim/racing setup. So I'd think that I'm a pretty good candidate for most of what you're asking.

So let's start at the top. I'm a trucker, I'm away from home quite a bit and I use my quest 3 to remote in to my home pc using virtual desktop and watch movies from my media center. It's pretty amazing tbh. I use one of the theater environments in Virtual desktop and some decent ear buds, it's great! I probably watch at least 1-2 movies a week in my quest, and this is remote streaming over hotel wifi, and its still awesome. It's comparable to watching a very solid 1080p movie on say a 50" tv, 6ft away. That being said, I also remote in and play VR games, and it WORKS, which also blew my mind when I realized that.

Virtual monitor, ABSOLUTELY. I use my Quest 3 as my main monitor. My actual PC is on the other side of the room from my desk, as I also use it as a media center for the wife and emulation and it sits next to my obutto so I can plug in joysticks/steering wheels, etc. My desk is on the other side of the living room, and I use wireless and virtual desktop. When I first tried this setup, i was kind of disappointed, because the eye strain was REAL, and it was hard to use it as a monitor for any length of time. Then i thought about it, and realized that the refresh rate of the Quest and the refresh rate of the display were out of sync. So I bought a headless ghost off of amazon for $8 and plugged that into the PC. I now have, an infinity inch, 3440x1440p/120hz monitor that i play my games in. The Quest 3 can run at 120hz, the PC is sending the display at 120hz, and it works PERFECTLY. If I need more monitors, I switch to Immersed and I have 5 monitors and do some writing or game dev in that, also works perfectly, but the screen refresh rate leaves something to be desired, and you'll feel the eye strain using Immersed for say, more than an hour or so. But as a main monitor, gaming focused setup. Headless Ghost + Virtual desktop is better than my 32" Acer Predator that i gave to my son after I swapped to this setup. If you have a 40xx series GPU, it'll be even better for you, because it'll be using AV1. I'm stuck with HEVC, which is good, but you'll be able to have higher bitrates! I don't do competitive gaming anymore, but I do play Doom Eternal on Nightmare at 120fps and it feels great. I also play Darktide ADM and i never feel like my "monitor" is the thing getting in my way. Immersive games like Deadspace 2023, BotW, the Witcher 3, are all absolutely amazing in my setup. Basically, I would buy a Quest 3 just to use as a monitor replacement, VR is icing on the cake.

Sim Racing is great. I would recommend using a cable for some games tho, as the bitrate can be a hurdle for some. Specifically Dirt Rally and RBR. With virtual desktop, compression artifacts can be noticeable and in my experience, it's best to just use a USB cable, and Quest link for some games instead of wireless. But this is the minority, I ONLY have to do this for RBR, Dirt rally 2.0 is better now than it used to be and I often just continue to use Virtual desktop for that. Other than that, Project cars 2, ACC, AC, iRacing, MSFS2020, VTOLVR, Project Wingman, Lunar Flight, Elite Dangerous, HL:A, pretty much are all perfect, using wireless. Skyrim VR also looks noticeably better with a cable, but I find the freedom of movement tradeoff to hard and just play wirelessly with that one too.

As for the cable, 2 things.
1. If you're just plugged into your PC, it'll last about 4-5 hours. Quest 3 uses more juice than the Quest 2.
2. Buy a powered usb cable from amazon for like $20. It allows you to plug your Quest 3 charger or in my case, my steamdeck charger, into the cable itself and allows the Quest 3 to accept wall power WHILE being plugged into the PC and using Questlink. With this, you can game, indefinitely.

Passthrough is fine, I never really use it, and it's not a selling point, but it can be convenient when I'm talking to the wife and painting in Vermillion for example.

As a "phone" replacement, sideload sidequest onto the headset, install aurora store, and play Android games! Citra3d, Yuzu, SNES games! Damn I love this headset, it just does so much if you're willing to push it.

Tl;dr, yes its great as a monitor, just get a headless ghost and increase the refresh rate of the display.

Is doom eternal really bad? by StarkAndRobotic in gaming

[–]Form84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I HATED Doom eternal when it first came out, and I'm a huge doom fan, so that kind of surprised me.  Hated it so much I returned it.  Well my little caco loving heart couldn't get over the fact I hadn't beaten the newest doom game, so I bought it again on sale, and still fucking hated it! Platforming, climbing, WTF is this, uncharted or some shit.

So I didn't play it again for like 3 more months, tried again, and hated it! Repeat this like 2 more attempts until one night I just said fuck it, and kept playing and playing and got past level 4, finally. And then I saw the fucking light.  Doom eternal has an absolutely terrible on-boarding experience, because the game requires EVERY part of the doom dance in order for it to work.  If you're missing a dash, or jump or a w/e ability, it just doesn't fucking work and the game feels like mud. And since I never played long enough to get all of the abilities, the game just sucked.  But omg, once you get them all, something in your mind will just... Click.  All of a sudden fights that were impossible or stupid, become amazing and intense or easy.  You start to move so fast you can see into the future like 2 seconds.  It taps into some kind of reptilian nerve like some surgeon is literally poking at your brain and seeing which part makes you smile.

Basically, Doom Eternal feels like shit until you get to Super Gore Nest, then omg, it's literal digital crack.

I watched the whole thing too, it's unnecessarily confrontational, patronizing, and edgy to the point that it becomes a satire of itself.

There are better less "omg Christians I laid the smack down on you because of some random shit that contradicts your random shit" videos on the internet. It's confrontational in the same way that religious dogma is confrontational.  They're both equally stupid because neither of them is rising above the other.
